3 What could an SDR / CR look like? Micro-Processor and / or DSP(s) D/A A/D Network Access e.g. RS 232 (if Ho) and/or other devices Power Amplifier Antenna Front end Antenna Memory (Read/Write) Disk e.g. drive A: Read and write Disk e.g. drive B: Read ONLY possibly (if not Ho) one or more Radio Interface(s) Radio Operating System e.g. drivers, security, self-check ETSI Workshop 3
4 Definitions the details of the definitions used in association with Software Defined Radios (SDRs) vary significantly two major families of users of terms : the specialists (who will easily focus on certain aspects) "the layman" (including media and specialised press, who often can generalise very easily, hence significantly broadening the definitions) "Authorised" Sources : ITU, TCAM, IEEE, etc ETSI Workshop 4
5 SDR or NOT SDR That's the question! The question of terminology gets more complex as some of the features that many would associate with SDR do not, in fact, require SDR technology to be implemented or achieved : e.g. some kind of flexibility may be obtained by multimode equipment ETSI Workshop 5
6 Examples of an SDR definition the definition used by TCAM Proposed definition in TCAM/TGS Questionnaire Impact of SDR on the R&TTE Directive SDR equipment or Software defined radio equipment is a radio where essential radio parameters - normally subject to regulation - like frequency range, modulation type, maximum output power etc. can be altered by changing software. Note: For the purpose of this assessment software is defined as the following: Software is a set of computer instructions and data recorded in a device, and which technically can be modified after placing the equipment on the market. 7 Further Comments (1) On the one hand: a number of these definitions can be fulfilled by existent equipment (not said to be "SDR") the focus is often limited to the physical layer. On the other hand, a number of those interested in SDRs, look forward to: more flexibility at system level (where several transmission modes (coding, packets, etc ) could use the same physical layer more possibilities of dynamic adaptation of the radios (usage of different radio accesses) ETSI Workshop 7
8 Further Comments (2) Among others, one important point is to consider: if the SDR technology has been used (by the manufacturer) as a mere implementation technique (and offers no further facilities/services to the user) if the benefits of the SDR architecture have been made available to the user; And another important point is to consider if equipment "should be declared as SDR" by the manufacturer, if it is so constructed, or not necessarily (or under which conditions). 9 Other techniques thought of together with SDRs : Cognitive Radios Source: ITU-R WP8A Working document towards a PDNReport Software Defined Radio in the Land Mobile Service document 8A/228-E, 6 September Cognitive Radio: A radio or system that senses, and is aware of, its operational environment and can be trained to dynamically and autonomously adjust its radio operating parameters accordingly. It should be noted that cognitive does not necessarily imply relying on software/sdrs. For example, cordless telephones (no "visible" software) have long been able to select the best authorized channel based on channel availability. Cognitive Radios do they really need "to swap Radio Interfaces" as some of the definitions of "SDR" would have suggested? ETSI Workshop 9
10 Definition of Policy-Based Radio Source: ITU-R WP8A Working document towards a PDN Report Software Defined Radio in the Land Mobile Service document 8A/228-E, 6 September Policy-based radio: A radio that is governed by a predetermined set of rules for behaviour. The rules define the operating limits of such a radio. The definition and implementation of these rules can be: during manufacture; during configuration of a device by the user; during over-the-air provisioning; and/or by over-the-air control. 11 Definition of Software Reconfigurable Radio Source: document gsc10_grsc3_20a1 TIA U.S. SDR Update. Software Reconfigurable Radio: A software defined radio that : (1) incorporates software-controlled antenna filters to dynamically select receivable frequencies, and (2) is capable of downloading and installing updated software for controlling operational characteristics and antenna filters without manual intervention.
