Spectrum sharing using Coexistence Frame and Networking solutions Mariana Goldhamer Director Strategic Technologies Alvarion 1
Disclaimer This presentation includes personal views and does not necessary reflects my position as: IEEE P802.16h Chair ETSI BRAN Vice-Chair ETSI BRAN HiperMAN Chair ETSI ERM Rapporteur for BWA SRDoc 2
Scope Identify the wish-list for better spectrum sharing Present some of the IEEE P802.16h mechanisms Network-based approach Coexistence Control Channel Channel sharing in time domain Identify areas for ETSI standardization 3
How optimal do we share the spectrum? We reserve spectrum for different services But is the spectrum used: At this location? Radar Spectrally efficient? ENG / Radio mics At this time and location? MESA Temporary service needs reserved spectrum? TV Channel 4
Spectrum on demand Systems should be able to use a wider range of frequencies Software Defined Radio The spectrum should be slotted in frequency and time domain Preferred services / applications should be able to request and use the spectrum on demand Frequency channels for exclusive use A repetitive time-slot on a channel Share the channel A protocol might help Specify how much, when, where, how long, which frequency, which bandwidth, pattern of sharing in time IP level Technology neutral Sensing the cumulated interference might help Look for less used frequency channels and time-slots 5
Which are the preferred applications? Preferred applications and services Primary services and applications in each band Secondary users like Military applications Emergency / Public Safety applications ENG (Electronic News Gathering, radio microphones, TV cars, etc) BWA requests a lot of spectrum May be allocated in Licensed or LE mode For new bands should be a possibility for sharing with preferred applications 6
Network Architecture Network Architecture RAIS = Radio Application Identification Server Trusted server to be provided by the Radio Authority Connects the military and preferred radio applications BSIS = Base Station Identification Server Connects the BWA applications To be provided by operators which prefer to keep secret the BS locations BSIS RAIS Server Base Station Satellite antenna Base Station 7
How it works Preferred applications register to the RAIS GPS location IP Address Security certificate BWA Base Stations register to BSIS GPS Location IP address Security certificate Request / Response protocol Request of bandwidth by the Preferred application BWA applications confirm The basic protocol is defined in IEEE P802.16h 8
How to sense the max. cumulated interference Coexistence Control Channel CXCC in h Periodic short time slots, synchronized with the absolute time Cognitive Radio functionality: Cumulated interference sensing per Receiver channel Master sub-frame Claiming of the Master sub- frames Control functionality: Secondary synchronization Inter-system transmission of the IP address reference Using energy-keyed pulses in frequency domain in time-domain Inter-system communication for h profiles Measurement of the residual interference Overhead: 1% Period: 10s Slot duration: 2ms 9
Sharing a channel in time Up to three systems can share a channel The interference is limited interference during Master subframes Only systems using the h Coexistence Protocol can work in parallel with Master sub-frames Power control to limit the interference Shared sub-frames may be used in parallel by compatible technologies for links not-affected by interference h MAC Frame duration: 5ms System 1 Master S1 Slave S1 Slave S1 Shared System 2 Slave S2 Master S2 Slave S2 Shared System 3 Slave S3 Slave S3 Master S3 Shared CX-Frame MAC Frame N MAC Frame N+1 MAC Frame N+2 MAC Frame N+3 10
Coexistence Protocol in h IP Level inter-system communication Functionality Interferer identification Power control during Slave sub-frames Channel selection optimization Search process for an optimum frequency selection Channel switch messages Master sub-frame selection optimization Similar technologies should use the same sub-frames as Master Negotiation of interference - free intervals and optimization Credit Token based Allow other systems to use the available interference-free zones A Master may offer leasing for a given duration» advertise A number of Slaves may bid 11
Distributed Network Architecture in h IP Level communication inside a Coexistence Community 12
Initialization of the IP Communication Different possibilities Provisioning Signaling of the IP Address over the air Base Station Identification Server May be provided by the Radio Authority Contains GPS info IP Address BS_Identification (BSID in ) Identification string (contact information?) 13
Example: Network-initiated DFS Application: ENG (Wireless microphones / TV camera) A BWA system is operating at the same location IP communication with RAIS is established using a 3G terminal Request for spectrum (f1 f2), operation time, GPS location, radius RAIS establishes the communication with BSIS BSIS forwards the request to the relevant BSs BSs change the operating frequency Might involve finding a suitable Master sub-frame Spectrum is shared between BWA systems for the duration of the request 14
Example: using the free TV Channels BS Installation Searches the RAIS Data-base for free and non-adjacent TV channels To avoid detecting a BWA or P-P system as TV channel Measures the TV channel power level Establish if the level is in the allowed window If yes, starts operation SS operation Looks for the BS Associates with the BS BS informs the SS about the adjacent TV channels Measures the TV Channel power level If the level is not in the allocated window, informs the BS Advantage of the data-base It is possible to separate the digital TV from digital BWA Have the same spectrum characteristics 15
Example: Sharing the channel Potential applications Weather radars Short pulses at constant intervals Emergency & Safety (MESA) applications One or two Master sub-frame are requested Frequency request: from f1 to f2 for Radars, f3 to f4 for MESA Radars can specify the time interval between requested Master sub-frames MESA can specify for how long lasts the request MESA Master MESA Shared MESA or BWA Master MESA or BWA System Shared BWA Master BWA Shared CX-Frame MAC Frame N MAC Frame N+1 MAC Frame N+2 MAC Frame N+3 16
IEEE P802.16h Project Approval Request approved in Nov Title: Scope: Status IEEE P802.16/D2 in Working Group Letter Ballot #24 17
ETSI Advantage Brings together the industry, regulators, army, etc Can define the parameters of every radio application Relevant to frequency / time spectrum sharing Applications listed in ERC Report 25 WG: ERM/RM? BRAN RCWG? Can define the specific operational rules Can define the specific CX Protocol Messages May be an amendment to h WG: BRAN HiperMAN 18
