2 2 MTS Systemtechnik GmbH - Air Interface Adapter MTS Air Interface Adapter: Abbreviation AIAD stands for Air Interface Adapter. It was designed to emulate the air interface between the base stations (Node B or enodeb) and UE s. Purpose Air Interface emulators like AIAD, SCF or PAH from MTS Systemtechnik offer the possibility to carry out tests of mobile radio base stations and mobile stations via the air interface. This enables reproducible RF tests independent of radio interferences from the surrounding area. The MTS Systemtechnik air interface emulators were designed for mobile radio test, but can also be used for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other radio technologies. The AIAD can be used next to GSM and UMTS also for LTE. Other frequency ranges are possible on request. How does it work? Via semiconductor switches, different attenuators (1 db, 2 db, 4 db, 8 db etc.) can be switched into the signal path whereby all attenuation values in the range from 0 to 95 db are possible in 1 db-steps. A built-in logic selects the required attenuation steps. In these programmable attenuators the RF is transmitted bidirectional (uplink and downlink has the same attenuation). The internal attenuator-switchovers are continuously and without breaks. Several programmable attenuators are built into the AIAD together with different signal splitter and signal combiners to emulate the radio field by an attenuation network. 3 MTS Systemtechnik GmbH - Air Interface Adapter AIAD 3 Description AIAD-X/Y (X/Y = number of inputs/outputs) Many programmable attenuators are combined to one matrix (full-fan-in full-fan-out attenuation matrix) to emulate different radio conditions or the air interface. The AIAD is connected at one side to different signals radio base stations (NodeB or enodeb) and at the other side with a number of UE s. If the UE s have no RF-connector, they should be placed into separate shielding boxes (also avaiable from MTS Systemtechnik) and connected via antenna (accessory) each. This allows tests without radio interferences from the environment. The desired attenuation values can be adjusted for each path between radio base stations and UE s separately. The adjustments can be done remotely via RS-232 interface or an optional LAN, USB or IEEE-488 interface. Also a manual control (Touchpanel Display) is available. Optional the system is available with an BITE-System (Built-In-Test system), an automatic self test at power-on, performed for all physical attenuator steps and at all included paths. Windows Control Program The program Device Control is available to control programmable attenuators, delay lines and RF-switches, to control several devices at the same time and it includes a sequencer to make programming of attenuation ramps easy. System with 4 RF ports, coupled to each other RF port through 95 db programmable attenuators and monitor connections for every port. 2 Signal Splitters (4x) Programmable Attenuators (6x) Description Programmable Attenuator Unit PAH-6G-X (X = number of paths) The MTS Attenuator Unit is a very flexible solution for an air interface emulation. With the Attenuator Unit it is possible to emulate the in- and outputs according to the demands of the customer. A number of separate programmable attenuators are build into one device. The programmable attenuators can be controlled individually or in groups. Frequency range: AIAD-X/Y: MHz / Mhz AIAD-X+: Mhz PAH-4G-X: Mhz PAH-6G-X: Mhz Other frequency ranges on request.

5 MTS Systemtechnik GmbH - Standard Coupling Field SCF MTS Standard Coupling Field SCF-0600: Function The SCF-0600 is an extended version of an air interface emulator for more signal paths, greatly expanded frequency range and higher input power. It emulates the air interface between 12 input- and 10 outputconnectors. Each signal path can be attenuated separately by programmable attenuators. For each input connector a level detector distinguishes two different signal power threshold levels. A green LED glows if the signal is in the range between -45 dbm and +10 dbm and a red LED indicates potentially too high power above +10 dbm (the threshold levels at the SCF-0601 are deviant: -40dBm and +15 dbm). The desired attenuator values can be adjusted by a manual control (via up/down-buttons and display) or remote via RS-232, LAN or USB interface. The additional included RK3 hybrid couplers (=3dB couplers) can be used as needed for further signal combining or distributing. Limitations It is important to notice that the RF-input is limited: Power: +33 dbm max. Frequency range: MHz What kind of tests can be performed? 6 B C D E F 6 MTS Systemtechnik GmbH - Standard Coupling Field SCF MTS Standard Coupling Field SCF-0301-LAN: Function Two BTS (or Node B or enodeb) input signals can be attenuated separately with programmable attenuators and are combined to one output connector (BTS x/y OUT). On the output connector the MS or UE can be connected. If the MS or UE has no RF-connector, it can be used inside of a MTS Systemtechnik shielding box, series MSB and connected via antenna (accessory) to test it without radio interferences from the environment however. For each input connector (BTS1 - BTS6) a level detector distinguishes two different signal power threshold levels. A green LED glows if the signal is in the range between -40 dbm and +15 dbm and a red LED glows if it is above +15 dbm and potentially too high. As visible on the block diagram below there are totally 3 of the above described 2/1-programmable-attenuatorstages included in one SCF-0300 device. The additional included power splitters 2x 1/2 and 1x 1/4 at the right side of the block diagram can be used as needed for further signal combining or distributing. The desired attenuator values can be adjusted by a manual control or remote via RS-232 or LAN-interface. 7 MTS Systemtechnik GmbH - Frequency-Selective Attenuation 7 MTS Frequency-Selective Attenuation Network FSAN: Function With the MTS Systemtechnik Frequency-Selective Attenuation Network (FSAN) you can select (standalone) or combine (carrier aggregation) different live radio standards from each other. These signals can be directly connected with cables from base stations or signal generators (passband). In addition you can distribute the desired radio standards which correspond to the MTS Systemtechnik Air Interface Adapter (AIAD) principle by using several FSAN and power dividers. Selection and Distribution of live radio signals plays an important role in our time. Signals of this kind can be received via antennas and modified by appropriate technology. Possible applications are, for example, handover scenarios, signal selection and distribution as well as carrier aggregation. These modifications can be done without additional conversions and are therefore cheaper and easier to operate as compared to channel emulators. What kind of tests can be performed?
