2 MAGNUM 10 Watt X-ray Source Characteristics The MAGNUM x-ray tube is small, lightweight, and can be packaged into custom enclosures. The MAGNUM x-ray tube package includes an x-ray tube and a high voltage power supply that operates at up to 0 kv and 00 μa. The MAGNUM tube is ideal for battery-powered applications. The tube anode is grounded allowing placement close to the sample. 3 Initial Inspection When a MAGNUM tube is received, it should be unpacked and inspected as soon as possible. A standard MAGNUM tube is packaged in a brass shield. This shield is connected to a high voltage power supply via two white high voltage wires and one green ground wire (Figure 1). Inspect the high voltage power supply and the tube shield assembly for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. If a tube has been damaged, please contact Moxek immediately. The serial number is located on the high voltage power supply. Please do not touch the beryllium window. Do no pull on or bend the high voltage wires. Lift the power supply and the tube with both hands to avoid damaging the high voltage wires or potting material. Prevent the tube from striking any surface. Care must be taken to not damage the beryllium window or high voltage wires. 4 Source Setup Mechanical The shielded MAGNUM tube assembly may be mounted with the exit collimator facing any direction. Care should be taken not to strain the high voltage wires. Minimum high voltage wire bend radius is 1. inches. The high voltage power supply has three threaded holes on both sides of the metal case. These holes may be used for mounting (see Drawing 1). Cooling The MAGNUM tube does not require forced convection or liquid cooling. The tube should be operated in an environment that allows free convection or conduction to secondary parts. Please refer to page of this manual for ambient and storage temperature specifications. The maximum ambient temperature, as measured at the surface of the power supply enclosure, is +10 C. The maximum operating anode shield temperature is 100 degrees Celsius (see Figure ). Electrical Output power below 4W: Moxtek recommends using the -pin optional secondary cable (ASM0064) while operating the 0kV Magnum Tube (Figure 4). The pin assignment is shown in Drawing 1 and in Table 1. Output power above 4W: -pin secondary cable is required for tube and stability (Figure 4). Attach the pin secondary power cable to the backside of the high voltage power supply case. Refer to Figure and Table 1 for pin identification and electrical specifications. Attach the bare wire leads to a 6 to 10VDC power supply or to a Moxtek FTC-00 x-ray tube controller. The high voltage power supply also has a 10 pin IDC connector. This connector is used to power, control, and monitor the x-ray tube (Figure 6). A 10 lead ribbon cable is available from Moxtek (Figure ). This ribbon cable has a 10 pin IDC connector on one side that connects to the high voltage power supply and a DB9 connector on the other end that connects to the Moxtek FTC-00 controller. The pin assignment for the 10 pin IDC is shown in Drawing 1 and the pin-out for the DB9 connector is shown in Table 1. Safety To assure safe tube operation, a volt TTL signal is sent to the power supply to enable x-ray generation. Moxtek recommends the use of a safety interlock switch when operating the MAGNUM x-ray tube. 5 Operating Conditions MAGNUM tube anodes are grounded to a metal shield (Figure 1). The shield is grounded to the power supply via a green wire. Make sure that the green ground wire is securely connected from the tube shield to the grounding terminal on the high voltage power supply case. DO NOT disconnect the green ground wire from the tube shield or the high voltage power supply. It will damage the tube and/ or power supply if the ground cable is loose or damaged; do not operate the tube until the ground cable is secured or replaced. Isolate all grounds for the x-ray tube. When operating the 0kV MAGNUM x-ray tube, adhere to the maximum setting: 0 kv, 0.0 ma max. Failure to adhere to these limits may cause damage the x-ray tube and/or high voltage power supply. Failure to adhere to this parameter will forfeit the tube warranty. When operating the MAGNUM x-ray tube, wait seconds after the tube has been powered off before powering the tube on again. Failure to wait seconds may damage the filament. Failure to adhere to this parameter will forfeit the tube warranty. Operating Precautions and Warnings CAUTION: Verify that the tube and the high voltage power supply are properly grounded before powering on the FTC-00 tube controller. Also verify that the FTC-00 controller is properly grounded to the power outlet. If you are not using the FTC-00 Controller and using a custom controller, make sure the tube and the high voltage power supply are properly grounded. CAUTION: MAGNUM X-ray tubes contain Beryllium. Inhaling Beryllium dust may cause lung disease refer to the MSDS. Under normal use, Beryllium dust is not generated. If the Beryllium window is broken, a very small amount of dust might be generated. If this occurs follow the instructions on the MSDS for cleanup. WARNING: MAGNUM X-ray tubes may become very hot during operation. WARNING: MAGNUM X-ray tubes produce x-ray radiation. MAGNUM tubes are shielded with a metal shield and high-z potting materials. Extra shielding may be required depending on the application. ONLY OPERATE X-RAY TUBES IN PROPERLY SHIELDED ENCLOSURES. It is the responsibility of the operator to ensure that all applicable safety precautions are taken and observed. WARNING: MAGNUM X-ray tubes operate at high voltages. Refer to tube handling instructions on page. Precautions should be taken to protect the operator while applying high voltages to avoid serious injury or death. Operating a MAGNUM Source without a Moxtek FTC-00 Controller The high voltage power supply uses DC voltages and signals to operate the tube. To operate the tube without using a Moxtek FTC- 00 controller, refer to Drawing 1 for the 10 pin high voltage power supply connector pinouts. Operating the MAGNUM X-ray Source with a Moxtek FTC-00 Controller The FTC-00 controller is designed to power, monitor, and control the MAGNUM x-ray tube. This controller contains all of the necessary electronics to operate the high voltage power supply. The FTC-00 controller provides input power to the high voltage power supply. The FTC-00 controls the high voltage and emission current settings on the x-ray tube. The FTC-00 controller includes built-in meters for convenient monitoring and display of the high voltage and emission current.
