Figure. External remote control configurations Configuring the Audio Bridge Configuring the Audio Bridge is an important step in setting up the bridge to operate correctly; however, this step is intended for technicians only. It involves adjusting the audio levels to provide appropriate levels for the receive and transmit audio; and setting up the audio linking DIP switches on the front panel to provide the correct channel linking and interpretation of LED status indicators. You ll need to remove the front cover plate shown in Figure to gain access to the audio linking DIP switches and the audio level potentiometers, as outlined in the following procedures. Figure. Front panel cover plate Adjusting the Audio Levels The signal levels for both transmit and receive are factory set to -0dBm. All adjustments can be made externally via switches and potentiometers accessible from the front panel when the cover plate has been removed. The diagram in Figure shows the front panel for the EI Six-Way Audio Bridge and a close-up of the Level Adjustments potentiometers the GI -Way Audio Bridge only supports ports to. For further details about the front panel, refer to Figure 0, Figure, and Figure in Appendix A, Technical Information. 14 Chapter. Apply the nominal maximum level from the attached equipment across the balanced Rx input for port (refer to Table for pin connections).. Set the DIP switch for Input Port # Meter to ON, and set all the other DIP switches to OFF.. Adjust Port # In potentiometer so that the maximum level indicated on the Level Meter is on the threshold of turning on the first red LED.. Repeat steps - above for ports to on the EI (or ports to for the GI).. Replace the cover by fastening the two screws. To adjust transmit output signal level. Remove the front panel cover that protects the Level Adjustments potentiometers by unfastening the two screws (see Figure ).. Adjust the receive signal input levels as outlined in the procedure above.. Remove the Remote Control connector if fitted to CN (EI only).. Apply the maximum level that is produced from attached equipment across the Rx inputs of channel.. Switch off all Mute Enable DIP switches.. Switch on Input Port # to Output Port DIP switch.. Switch off all other Input Port # to Output Port DIP Switches.. Ensure all Tx terminations have been made and that the associated equipment is switched on.. Measure the port Tx level at the external equipment (e.g. using a deviation meter for an FM transceiver). Adjust the Port # Out potentiometer for correct level as required by the external equipment. 0. Repeat steps - above for output ports to on the EI (or ports to for the GI) ensuring the correct Input Port # to Output Port DIP switch is set to ON.. (Optional) If you are using remote control (EI only), reconnect the Remote Control connector to CN.. Replace the cover by fastening the two screws. Setting up the Audio Links You can set up the audio links by either using the on-board DIP switches or via remote control. The following procedure provides step-by-step instructions for setting up the DIP switches. To set up audio links via DIP switches. Remove the front panel cover that protects the DIP switches by unfastening the two screws (see Figure ).. Mark each cell in the matrix below according to your linking requirements. For example, if you want to link Input Port to Output Port, mark the cell that corresponds to the Input Port row and the Output Port column. Note Ports to are supported by the EI and ports to are supported by the GI. Installing and Configuring the Audio Bridge
Inputs Outputs Port Port Port Port Port Port Port Port Port Port Port Port. For each marked cell in the matrix above, set the corresponding DIP switch to ON. For example, if you want to link Input Port to Output Port, set DIP switch of the switches labeled Input Port # to ON. In the example shown below, Input Port is linked to all six outputs as the DIP switches to located under Input Port # are set to ON.. Once you have set up the DIP switches, replace the cover by fastening the two screws. If you want to use remote control to set up the audio linking instead of manually setting the DIP switches as described above, you ll need to ensure that all port DIP switches are set to the OFF position. Furthermore, you can only use remote control via control equipment connected to CN of the EI Audio Bridge: the GI Audio Bridge does not support remote control. To set up audio links via remote control. Remove the front panel cover that protects the DIP switches by unfastening the two screws.. Ensure that all Input Port # to Output Port DIP switches are set to the OFF position. Any switches that are left in the ON position will result in the associated links permanently enabled. The Mute En and Meter DIP switches do not affect the audio linking.. Replace the cover by fastening the two screws. Selecting the E & M Options The E-Lead (from Ear requiring an input) & M-Lead (from Mouth providing an output) each have four available options: contact, voltage, switched ground, and switched power. The options are link selectable in-situ by removing the rear panel. Each port has a four-way by three-way right-angle header comprising of links A, B, C, and D by pins,, and as described below. Note Pin of each link is indicated by the square pad on the PC board. Link D uses pins and only. EI & GI Product Manual
Chapter M Lead (PTT) Output Options The options for the M-Lead (PTT) outputs are configured using Link C and Link D. A configuration diagram and a rear panel view of each option are shown in Figure. Individual options may be configured for each available port (EI = ports, GI = ports). Warning Incorrect link settings can connect an external supply directly to ground. Figure. E & M output options 0 Installing and Configuring the Audio Bridge

Chapter Operation of the Audio Bridge This chapter discusses the operation of the audio bridge, and includes the following sections: Status Indicators Using the Level Meter Using the Mute Enable Function on page Circuit Description on page Status Indicators The series Audio Bridge provides various status indicators on the front panel to make it easy to see what inputs are linked to what outputs and to monitor the audio levels. Figure shows the status indicators and the level meter on the front panel. Figure. Status indicators and the level meter These indicators operate as follows: Power Mute Inputs PTT Outputs Level Meter Indicates power is applied to the EI or GI Indicates corresponding Mute Input for that port is active (i.e. mute/busy is open). Indicates corresponding Output PTT for that port is active. Indicates the level of the selected port(s). Using the Level Meter The level meter shown in Figure indicates the level from a single input or from multiple inputs as selected by the DIP switches labeled Meter. When multiple inputs are monitored, the meter will indicate the algebraic sum (both voltage and phase are significant) of the input levels. Figure shows a close-up of the Meter DIP switch. In this example, you can see the corresponding switch for Output Ports and and both switches are set to OFF. This means that the audio on these outputs will not be shown on the level meter. To show the level for a particular input on the level meter, you must set the corresponding Meter switch to the ON position. EI & GI Product Manual
Chapter Figure. Meter DIP switch Using the Mute Enable Function The Mute Enable function allows audio paths to be switched into the audio bridge under the control of the Mute Enable switches. This prevents noisy lines being permanently connected to the audio bridge. Each input has an associated mute enable DIP switch labeled Mute En, as shown in Figure. To see how this function works, consider the following configuration in which Input Port is linked only to Output Port. With the Mute En switch of Input Port set to ON, no audio from that input will appear at Output Port TX line until Input Port mute/busy signal is active. However, with Mute En switch set to OFF, the audio from that input will always appear at Output Port TX line. Circuit Description The following sections provide a detailed discussion of the operation of the audio bridge. Only the operation of port one will be discussed as the operation of the other ports is identical. Power Conditioning DC power input is fused by F and filtered by C. D protects circuitry against application of reverse voltage. D protects circuitry against application of excessive voltage. IC is a low drop out regulator. C is required by IC to operate correctly and along with C provides filtering. A.V bias voltage is generated by the ratio of R/R with C being large to bypass any power supply ripple. Received Audio The receive audio from CN pins and is isolated by transformer T with R providing a nominal 00W termination impedance. ICa is an inverting amplifier with adjustable gain. VR provides a gain variation of ±.db. The output of ICa is fed via an optional link LK* to drive the audio switches within IC and IC (RX). Mute/Busy The configuration of links LKA and LKB in association with the external connection made to CN pins and, derive the mute/busy voltage applied to the opto isolator IC to turn it on. R provides current limiting and R ensures the opto does not false trigger. The output of IC (pin ) switches on and pulls down R via an optional link LK* switching on the Mute Input LED within LD LED array (pin ). IC output also drives low the IC disable input (pin ) which enables its six inverting buffers. The inputs to IC reflect the status of the Enable Switches (within SW). They are normally pulled high by resistors within RN. When Enable - DIP switch is switched to the 'enable' position, the /Enable- line is pulled low and audio switch ICA is switched on. Operation of the Audio Bridge
Mute Enable Switch When the ch Mute Enable switch is off, the muting audio switches within IC and IC are controlled only by the position of the Enable switches (or external enable inputs). When the ch Mute Enable switch is on, the Mute En line applies to R (0K) giving two possible conditions. Mute Open line is high (Mute Input not active) The diodes within DN connected to the D inputs of IC are forward biased pulling the control inputs of audio switches high and turning them off. This mutes the audio. (A series resistor within RN (0K) isolates the effect of the pull-up resistor within RN (00K) and the Enable switch). The inverting buffers are disabled since the disable pin is high. Mute Open line is low (Mute Input active) The diode within DN connected to the /Mute Open line is forward biased and pulls down the R/diode junction point to approx. V. The other diodes are no longer forward biased and cannot exercise any control of the audio switches which are now controlled only by the Enable switches (or external enable inputs). The inverting buffers are enabled since the disable pin is low. Transmitted Audio Transmit audio passes via the mixer resistors RN into the mixing amplifier ICb this amplifier has unity gain and the feedback capacitor C to remove high frequency interference. ICb drives ICc, an inverting amplifier with adjustable gain, via an optional link LK0* which in turn drives one leg of T via R. VR provides a gain variation of ±.db. A phase inverted unity gain amplifier formed by ICD, R, and R drives the other leg of T. The secondary winding of T connects to CN pins and, which provide a balanced output line pair for transmit audio. PTT The PTT relay RL is driven by transistor Q via an optional link LK*. Diode D protects Q against back EMF produced when RL switches off. RL has two poles connected in parallel which in conjunction with the configuration of links LKC and LKD and external connection at CN pins and, drive the external equipment to its transmit state. Q switches RL on if any of the inputs to base resistors within RN are driven positive. The 'Activate' signals are derived from the outputs of the inverting buffers within IC, IC, IC, IC, IC and IC0. In order for Activate- line to go high, the Enable- line must be pulled low (i.e. Enable switch on) and the channel mute/busy input must be active. The position of the Mute Enable switch has no effect on the operation of the PTT relays. Audio Level Display The ten LEDs within LD form a bar display to indicate audio level to an operator. The audio to be monitored is taken from the conditioned output of each of the six receive audio amplifiers (i.e. RX - RX). Any single channel or combination of channels may be selected by operating the relevant DIP switch(es) (see Using the Level Meter on page ). The resistors within resistor network RN0 apply the inputs to the unity gain mixer amplifier ICA. Audio at TP is amplified and half-wave rectified by ICB, D, and D. C charges via R0 and discharges via R0 and R: the values selected provide for peak detection of the applied AC signal. VR is factory adjusted to set the gain of ICB (in conjunction with R and R) to calibrate the level meter. IC senses the analog voltage at its input (pin ) and drives ten LEDs providing a logarithmic bar graph indication of db per LED. Optional Links The optional links LK, LK, LK, and LK0 are normally shorted out by a bottom-layer track and are not fitted. The track may be cut and the link fitted to provide access to transmit and receive audio, mute/busy, and PTT for future development of an option card. EI & GI Product Manual
