Introduction About this Supplement The DRG-Series of Digital Radio Gateway devices supports many digitalradio functions. However, not all digital radios support all of these functions. Hence, the DRG is programmed at the factory to support a particular digital-radio interface depending on the digital radios you intend to use. This publication supplements the information in the DRG-Series Product Manual originally supplied with your DRG product. The information presented covers the configuration and diagnostics of the DRG implementing the Kenwood NXDN digital-radio interface. This interface provides RS232 serial data and 4-wire E&M audio. This digital-radio interface is known as NXDN Donor Radio (Tier-2) and is compatible with Kenwood NX-5000 series and NX-700 series VHF/UHF mobile radios. This manual is intended for technical support personnel, system and network administrators, who install, configure and maintain the DRG. Firmware Compatibility The configuration of the DRG described in this supplement is compatible with the NXDN Donor Radio (Tier-2) firmware for the DRG100/DRG200i as listed below. Please contact your local Omnitronics Sales Representative for further information. Firmware DRG100 Kenwood Application interface Stock Code DRG100-KEN21 Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 1

Configuration This section discusses the configuration of the DRG implementing the Kenwood NXDN donor radio (T2) digital-radio interface. All web page images included in this supplement are specific to the DRG100 device; however, the web pages for the other DRG devices will be similar This chapter includes the following topics: Viewing the System Status Digital Radio Configuration on page 7 Viewing the System Status Select the System Status menu to display comprehensive status information about your DRG. The information displayed on this page is read-only so you cannot make any changes to the values. This page shows the version information for both the hardware and the firmware used in the DRG together with its operational status. Figure 1 shows an example of the System Status page when logged in under the administrator account if you are logged in under the technician or limited-user accounts, the information displayed will be the same; however, you will not see as many menu items. Most of the information shown on this page is the same for all digitalradio interfaces supported by the DRG for further information about these values, refer to the respective DRG-Series Product Manual. The status information that is specific to the Kenwood interface appears under the Digital Radio: KENWOOD Status section (see Digital Radio Status on page 6). Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 5

Figure 1. System status page Digital Radio Status The information displayed under Digital Radio: KENWOOD Status section includes the following setting: Serial connection shows the state of the serial connection to the radio and can be either Connected or Disconnected. In normal operation, the digital radio status should show Connected. 6 Configuration

Digital Radio Configuration Select Digital Radio on the menu to display the configuration page similar to the one shown in Figure 2. This page shows the settings that are common to all digital-radio interfaces in addition to the settings applicable to only the Kenwood digital-radio interface. These settings are the same in both basic and advanced modes. Figure 2. Digital radio configuration page for common settings The settings on the Digital Radio tab are the common settings and allow you to disable some of the digital-radio capabilities depending on your requirements. These settings are discussed in the section Common Digital Radio Settings on page 8. The settings applicable to the Kenwood interface appear on the Kenwood Settings tab and are discussed in Kenwood Interface Settings on page 11. Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 7

Common Digital Radio Settings The settings on the Digital Radio tab shown in Figure 2 are common to all digital-radio interfaces and are discussed in this section. Omnitronics Gateway Interface The information displayed under Omnitronics Gateway Interface is the same regardless of the digital-radio interface you are configuring, and includes only the following setting: TCP Port is the port the DRG uses for incoming TCP connections the DRG acts as a TCP server accepting incoming connections on this port from other Omnitronics devices. Digital Radio Settings The information displayed under Digital Radio Settings controls whether a specific capability is published to the DX-Altus Server, and therefore visible on an Omnitronics Dispatch Console such as Alto. Disable Channel Change option allows you to disable the capability to change the channel on the radio (this capability will be preconfigured by software provided by the radio manufacturer). Disable Call Alert option disables the ability for the console operator to send a call alert to another radio. Call alerts allow console operators to request call backs from radio operators (the radio operator acknowledges the alert by pressing PTT). Disable Individual Call option disables the ability to initiate an individual call from a console. Disable Individual Call Timeout option disables individual-call timeouts. Individual Call Timeout is the time in seconds that the DRG will wait for individual-call activity before it cancels the individual call and reverts to broadcast mode. This timeout is only used when the Disable Individual Call Timeout option is not selected. Disable Group Call option disables the ability to initiate a group call from a console to a group of radios. Disable Group Call Timeout option disables group-call timeouts. 8 Configuration

Group Call Timeout is the time in seconds that the DRG will wait for group-call activity before it cancels the group call and reverts to broadcast mode. This timeout is only used when the Disable Group Call Timeout option is not selected. Disable All Call Timeout option disables the All Call Timeout and allows the console operator to immediately setup a new call without the need to wait or cancel the All Call. If the timeout is enabled, it implies that the console operator will have to either first cancel the call (only applicable to P25) or wait for the timeout to expire (P25, MOTOTRBO, and ICOM). All Call Timeout is the time (in seconds) that the DRG will wait for all call activity to cease before it reverts to broadcast mode. This timeout is only used when the Disable All Call Timeout option is not selected. Call setup timeout is the timeout applied to call setup when the console operator does not PTT within a reasonable time (see Figure 3 on page 10). The console operator can use Alto to send a request to setup a specific call type. If a PTT is received within the specified time window, the DRG will setup this call type. However, if no PTT is received and the timer expires, the DRG will revert to its default call state. If an incoming call is received during this timeout window, the DRG will accept the incoming call and it will void the operator s original request. In this case, the operator will have to request the call type again after the incoming call ends. Disable Emergency option disables access to the Emergency feature from the DRG and any connected dispatch consoles such as Alto. Disable Text Messaging disables the capability to send a text message to a specific radio or to a group of radios. Disables GPS prevents GPS coordinates generate by the radio from reaching connected dispatch consoles such as Alto and RediTALK- Flex. As a result, any remote radios using this radio talk path will not be shown on the GPS map. Disable Radio GPS Request prevents connected dispatch consoles such as Alto and RediTALK-Flex from requesting the current GPS coordinates of any radio on this talk path. Disable Radio Status Message disables the capability to access status messages from the DRG and any connected dispatch consoles such as Alto. Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 9

Disable call type selects the type of call to use for the default call type and can be either All Call or Group Call. Default Group specifies the number of the default group. Call Timeouts Call timeouts are illustrated in the timing diagram depicted in Figure 3. The purpose of a call timeout is to ensure the connection is maintained during overs so that the call is not prematurely disconnected. If no further activity (BUSY/PTT) is detected during the time specified by the call timeout, the call will automatically disconnect. Figure 3. Digital radio timing diagram showing call timeouts The timeouts for each call type (IND, GRP, ALL) can be configured independently, and can be enabled or disabled as required. Note The radio system will have similar call timeouts. If the radio system determines that a call has been completed due to a timeout, it will end the call and notify the DRG. It is advisable that you always set the DRG timeouts greater than the actual radio timeouts. 10 Configuration

If the timeout associated with a particular call is not disabled, the DRG will maintain the connection (call type and recipient) and reset the call timeout after each over. When a call timeout occurs (no one pressed PTT within the timeout), the DRG will revert to the default call type. If the timeout associated with a particular call is disabled, the DRG will apply the default call configuration (All Call) once PTT/BUSY clears. Kenwood Interface Settings Select the Kenwood Settings tab to display the settings applicable to the Kenwood NXDN configuration, as shown in Figure 4. This page is the same in both Basic and Advanced modes. Figure 4. Digital radio configuration for Kenwood interface Serial Port Settings Configure the setting under Serial Port Settings as follows: Baudrate is the serial data rate (in bps) configured for the serial port and includes the following values: 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 56700, and Kenwood Radio Settings Configure the settings under Kenwood Radio Settings as follows: Operating Mode sets up the DRG for the type of channels supported by the radio. Currently, only digital channels are supported, and hence, you can only select Digital Mode. Analog channels may be supported in a future release. Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 11

You must ensure this is set correctly. If you set the DRG to be digital but the channel on the radio is analog, the system behaviour becomes undefined and the DRG might not work properly. You should also be aware that when you change the operational mode of the DRG (and after restarting it like the web page suggests), the capabilities selected on the SCU will change. Hence, console operators need to log out and then log in again to update the mode. Enable radio busy validation allows the DRG100 to validate the busy input form the donor radio (debounce) to ensure it is present for the specified time period. The default setting is busy validation disabled. Radio busy validation time is the duration (in milliseconds) for busy validation: the state of the busy signal will be ignored for this period, and no busy state or audio will be sent to the VoIP connection. Note: The audio from the radio is delayed by the busyvalidation time. This will ensure that the received audio from the radio is synchronized with the validated busy output. Radio Unit ID is the radio ID associated with the donor radio connected to the DRG100. This must match the value configured in the Kenwood radio. Radio Zone Number is the default zone for the donor radio connected to the DRG100. Currently the DRG100 does not support changing the zone dynamically. This should be set to the default zone configured in the donor radio connected to the DRG Configuration

Diagnostics and Statistics This section discusses the diagnostic features of the DRG and how to use these features with the Kenwood NXDN digital-radio interface, and includes the following topics: Digital Radio Diagnostics Statistics on page 18 Digital Radio Diagnostics The DRG provides a separate diagnostics page for performing basic diagnostics and troubleshooting of the digital radio interface. Select Digital Radio under the Diagnostics menu to view the Digital Radio Diagnostics page. Figure 5 shows the corresponding page for the Kenwood interface. Figure 5. Default Call Type Individual Call Group Call All Call Call Alert Next radio call will be the default for this radio. Calls to a single radio. Calls to all radios in a particular group. Multiple calls to all radios on the network. Sends call alert to one radio (sent immediately without waiting for the next Push To Talk request). Destination: Radio ID or Group ID specifies the unique identity of the radio, or the group of radios, that you want to call. To set up a particular call to a radio, or group of radios, select the call type from the Call Type dropdown, type the numerical destination into the Destination: Radio ID or Group ID text box, and then click Setup Call to send the request to the radio this may occur as soon as you click the button or it may occur on the first Push-to-Talk. Once the request is sent, the call type should appear next to the Call Type under the Radio Status section (see Radio Status on page 16). 14 Diagnostics and Statistics

Busy Activate Use the Toggle Busy section to simulate and test the busy signal on this DRG. This is useful when you suspect the busy signal from the repeater/base station is not detected. To simulate and test the busy signal, click Activate Busy. This should send a busy indication to the dispatch console so you can check whether the busy indication operates as expected. You should also see the busy indication under Radio Status section (see Radio Status section on page 16). When you are done, click the button again to stop the test. Channel Change Use the Channel Change section to test the channel-change capability of the radio. This section may not be visible depending on whether the option to disable channel change is selected (see the Disable Channel Change option on page 8). This section includes the following setting: Channel Number is the number of the radio channel to select. To send a channel-change request to the radio, type the channel number into the Channel Number text box, and then click Set Channel. This changes the channel on the radio to that specified in the Channel Number setting. Send Text Message Use the Send Text Message section to test the text-messaging capability of the DRG by sending a text message to the specified radio or group of radios. Note This section will not be visible when the Text Messaging capability is disabled (see Disable Text Messaging option on page 9). Message Type selects the type of message to send and can be one of the following: Individual or Group. Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 15

Destination Radio ID or Group ID is the unique identity of the radio, or group of radios, to which you want to send the message. 25 RTP receive valid packets the number of valid RTP packets received from the remote device. RTP receive invalid packets is the number of packets received that do not contain valid RTP formatting. If this number is very large, it may indicate that this port is being used by some other network protocol. RTP receive valid bytes is the total number of bytes received via RTP. RTP receive sequence errors indicates the number of packets that either were not received or which arrived out of order. If this value is large, it indicates that the network is experiencing packet loss or excessive network jitter. RTP receive packets too late indicates that a packet containing audio arrived at the DRG after it should have been played. If this value is large, it indicates excessive and changing network propagation delays. RTP receive STUN packets indicates the number of value STUN messages received. Some VoIP clients send STUN messages on the RTP port to help determine network configuration. RTP receive MULTICAST packets indicates whether a packet has been received from a multicast address. RTP transmit packets is the number of network (UDP) VoIP packets sent, but does not include other packets such as web server data or SNMP packets. RTP transmit bytes is the total number of data bytes sent, and includes the payload data, but it does not include the overhead due to Ethernet protocol. Current transmit bytes per second is an estimate of the current bandwidth usage for VoIP. This will display a non-zero value only if the DRG is currently transmitting audio information. Time since valid RTP packet is the time in milliseconds since the last RTP packet was received. RTP Payload 8 is the total number of RTP packets with a payload number of 8. RTP Payload 97 is the total number of RTP packets with a payload number of 97. RTCP receive total packets is the total number of RTCP packets received from the remote device. RTCP receive valid packets is the number of valid RTCP packets received from the remote device. Kenwood NXDN Donor Radio Supplement 19

RTCP receive invalid packets is the number invalid RTCP packets received from the remote device. RTCP receive valid bytes is the number of bytes received via RTCP. RTCP transmit packets is the number of RTCP packets transmitted to the remote device. RTCP transmit bytes is the total number of bytes transmitted via RTCP to the remote device. Time since valid RTCP packet is the time in milliseconds since the last RTCP packet was received. Source Name is the name (address) of other IPR/VoIP devices communicating with this DRG: Firmware Information identifies the firmware, and the version of the firmware, that this IPR device is running. Source IP Address is the source IP address for this audio source, such as Source UDP Port is the UDP Port for this audio source, such as Received packets is the number of VoIP data packets received from the remote device. Duplicate packets is the number of packets that have been detected containing exactly the same data (network errors). Misordered packets is the number of packets that have arrived out of order, usually due to network delays. Packets arrived too late is the number of packets that arrived after the point they should have been played (network errors due to high latency). Current playout delay is how much audio (in milliseconds) the DRG device is currently holding in its jitter buffer. Current Busy State is the current state of the Busy (Mute) input. Current PTT State is the current state of the remote audio source requested for the local DRG PTT output. This will appear when the remote site has an active busy signal from a connected radio. 20 Diagnostics and Statistics
