13 Tool Certification to DIN ISO 9001 Certification Regular quality checks of Weidmüller processing tools and the assemblies made with them guarantee optimum safety. In order to keep it that way and to prevent possible machine stoppages during production, regular maintenance and precise tool calibration is simply indispensable. In order to receive a certified tool, customers have the option of either returning an existing Weidmüller tool for re-certification, or of purchasing a certified Weidmüller tool on submitting a new order. 16 Introduction Cutting Cutting B A large number of cables and conductors in many different types and designs are used to connect electrical and electronic components. The cables and wires must be accurately prepared for the various types of connection. The quality of the cutting process is therefore of critical importance. Weidmüller s wide range of cutting tools fulfils all the criteria for professional cable preparation. The demands Weidmüller makes of its products can be suarised simply: a smooth, straight cut without deforming the conductor. Users profit directly from this philosophy, whilst maintaining ease of use. Weidmüller is a specialist in the cutting of copper or aluminium cables. The product selection ranges from cutting tools for small cross-sections (with direct transmission of force) to cutting tools for large diameters. Mechanical efficiency together with the special cutting pattern reduces the manual force required to a minimum. B.2

17 Introduction Cutting At Weidmüller the term cutting refers to the severing of cables, wires and conductors of copper or aluminium with a tool appropriate for the application. The requirement for all cutting tools is to perform a smooth, straight cut without deforming the conductor. According to DIN 8588, experts differentiate between shear cutting, wedge-action cutting, tearing and breaking. Shear cutting is employed particularly in the cutting of cables, wires and conductors. Cutting tools with cross blades should perform an oblique cut and operate without play. The essential quality characteristics for professional cutting tools are a cutting edge shape which is suited to, and optimised for, the corresponding application, so that the manual forces required for cutting remain low. This allows singlehanded operation. Tools by Weidmüller comply with all requirements imposed on professional cutting tools. B Movement of the blades Position of the blades We differentiate between two basic cutting processes: Push cut Draw cut In push cut, the cutting movement is perpendicular between tool and workpiece. In draw cut, the cutting movement is oblique to the tool. In position 1 the blades act directly and over the whole length, i.e. considerable force is required. In position 2, the blades cross as in a pair of scissors, the cut is therefore offset and requires less force. 30 Introduction Stripping Stripping C After a conductor has been cut it is then prepared for the next step or for crimping. For this purpose, a specific length of the conductor insulation has to be removed, while preventing damage to the conductor. The length of the conductor insulation to be removed depends on the terminal clamping point or the crimp to be processed. Professional stripping tools guarantee perfect results due to precise adjustment of the tool to the corresponding insulation and the conductor cross-section. Precision tools by Weidmüller guarantee that the user will always obtain consistent, reliable stripping results. C.2

31 Introduction Stripping Stripping means the cutting and removal of the insulation. The following must be ensured in performing this task: The stripping dimension must be observed and neither the conductor nor the remaining insulation must be damaged. DIN IEC part 2 contains references to stripping faults which must be avoided: To avoid these faults, it is important that the stripping tool is suited to the insulation and to the cross-section range of the conductor. Do not use work knives or penknives because the stripping quality when using such tools depends entirely on the manual dexterity of the user. The quality is not consistent, even when the user is highly skilled. C Preference should be given to hand-operated tools that adjust automatically to the corresponding cross-section of the conductor. They do not damage to the conductor during stripping and avoid the faults shown on the left. Correctly stripped conductor Possible faults during stripping: stripax stripping tools guarantee a consistent stripping result which complies with DIN regulations. The tools are rated for standard dimension PVC insulation. Any PVC insulation thicknesses deviating from normal can be set manually. The conductor stopper and integrated wire cutter allow highly versatile use of the tools. Insulation has not been cut properly Special insulation types such as Teflon, Silicone and Kapton require special stripping tools. These tools strip the conductor with punch blades. 48 Introduction Crimping Crimping After stripping, appropriate contacts or wire end ferrules can be crimped to the cable end. Weidmüller offers a wide product range of mechanical crimping tools. D Crimping produces a reliable connection between conductor and contact, and has more or less completely replaced soldering. Crimping describes the production of a uniform, nondetachable connection between conductor and connecting element. This should be achieved exclusively by the use of a high-quality precision tool. The result is a safe, reliable connection in both electrical and mechanical terms. An integral ratchet mechanism with disengaging option guarantees optimum processing quality. Crimp connections produced with Weidmüller tools comply with international standards and specifications. D.2

The ferrule sleeve must be completely filled by the conductor. Depending on the cross-section, the conductor should protrude approx from the ferrule sleeve. Faulty crimping connections due to incorrect combination of cable and wire end ferrule It is not possible for a tool to function reliably with every combination of conductor and crimping material. It is possible that the standard requirements for the crimped product can t be achieved, although taken on their own, both conductor and crimping material comply with the corresponding standard. The individual production tolerances of conductor and crimping material do not allow every conductor to be combined with every contact. The combination of conductors, crimping material and crimping tool must be coordinated: this procedure is all the more difficult given the large number of products on the market. This means that the material must be defined and the crimping result tested, ensuring that the test, and later on the tool, satisfy the same conditions. 104 Special tools SAI Screwty for M8 / M12 Screwdrivers The perfect tool for all situations Screwty is the ideal, universal tool for tightening and releasing cable glands on all coon sensor and actuator cables. The Screwty can also reach those round plug connectors normally considered inaccessible. No great strength is required simply turn the tool to tighten or release the plug connector as required. The Screwty also fits the majority (more than 90%) of lines and plug connectors of other suppliers and is therefore a unique tool useful throughout the world. The Screwty consists of a handle with a conventional 1/4 inch fitting. This means it can be used for all sizes: for M12 and M8 round plug connectors, and the M12F and M8F types, also for plugs and sockets on custom cables. 108 Introduction Measuring/Testing Measuring/Testing G Testing plays a crucial role in setting up, maintaining and repairing electrical installations and devices. Tests are crucial when setting up, servicing and repairing electrical installations and equipment. Please apply and adhere to the accident prevention and safety regulations relevant to your installation, which call for repeat tests after modifications and maintenance work in addition to the tests required before using the installation for the first time. The person responsible for setting up the installation is required to check that the installation or individual components function perfectly. They must also ensure the compliance with the technological regulations, in particular the VDE regulations and technical connection requirements (TAB) issued by the power supply companies. It is also important to check that all precautionary measures to prevent extremely excessive contact voltage work perfectly in order to guarantee and comply with the necessary safety standard. The voltage and continuity testers from Weidmüller help you to test in compliance with the international standards. 2-pole voltage testers The main purpose of the voltage tester is to check the presence or absence of a voltage. The 2-pole voltage tester is an approved testing instrument that satisfies the requirements of the Industrial Safety Act. Infrared thermometer The 610 LC infrared thermometer enables the temperature of a surface to be determined exactly, reliably, quickly and without contact. Continuity testers The fully insulated plastic housings of our continuity testers are shockproof and unbreakable, and hence ideal for daily use in tough conditions. The integral lamp helps to find faulty lines quickly and safely. The continuity test can be indicated audibly and optically. Digital multimeters Multimeters are able to measure a number of different parameters. The measuring options for voltage and resistance, plus continuity testing and the diode test are available on every instrument as standard. Digital clamp-on meters Digital clamp-on meters and clamp-on meter attachments and adapters are used for measuring AC and DC currents.
