2 Poster Session The Poster Session aims to forge industry-student relationship and encourage students to take interest in Electromagnetics, Antennas and Microwave/RF. The session is open to UG of 3 rd year and above, PG and PhD students. The poster descriptions are The poster can contain a detailed study / MATLAB simulation (at UG level) & student projects with simulations/ fabricated projects (at UG/PG level) based on the topics and specializations given above. Students must quote all the references. The poster should contain the work done / study undertaken, procedure involved and the results. It should highlight the learning outcomes obtained out of the poster exercise. UG students can form teams of 2 PG and PhD students should do individual poster designs. Should be 1-2 page write-ups in MS Word and to ieeeaps.madras@gmail.com with a cc to venkatalakshmi.tifac@velammal.edu.in on or before 25 th June Should be forwarded with the names, affiliations & contact address of the authors. Poser template must be with Title, author names, designation and affiliation on top followed by the Objective of the work/motivation, Methodology/Experimental setup, Results & Inferences, Conclusion and References neatly arranged in II or III columns. Poster Size: A1. Poster Orientation: Landscape Printed posters should be displayed and explained by the authors during poster session. The template for the abstract may be downloaded from The notification of acceptance willl be ed by 30 th June Registration The number of participants is limited to 75. The registration fee is Rs.650/ /- for IEEE members and Rs. 750/- for Non-IEEE members. 4 Abstract of Talks Understanding Electrical Properties of Dielectrics Dr. Krishnasamy Selvan, Professor, ECEE Department, SSN College of Engineering, Chennai This talk will consider electrical properties of dielectrics, an understanding of which is important in printed antenna design. The physical principles underlying the idea of dielectric constant will be discussed. The concept of complex permittivity and loss tangentt will be considered. As to why dielectrics delay electromagnetic waves will be touched upon. Listing the types of dielectrics, the talk will briefly introduce tensors, useful in understanding anisotropic dielectrics. Speaker s biography Dr. Krishnasamy T. Selvan has been a Professor in the Department of ECE, SSN College of Engineering, India, since June From early 2005 to mid-2012, he was with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. From early 1988 to early 2005, Selvan was with SAMEER Centre for Electromagnetics, Chennai, India. Here he was essentially involved in antenna analysis, design, and testing. During , he was the Principal Investigator of a collaborative research programme that SAMEER had with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA. Later he was the Project Manager/Leader of some successfully completed antenna development projects. Selvan's professional interests include electromagnetics, horn antennas, printed antennas, and electromagnetic education. In these areas, he has authored or coauthored a number of journal and conferencee papers. Selvan was on the editorial boards of the International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering and the International Journal on Antennas and Propagation. He has been a reviewer for major journals including the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. He was Technical Programme Committee co-chair for the IEEE Applied Electromagnetics Conference held in Kolkata in December 2011, and Student Paper Contest co- chair for IEEE AEMC 2013 held in Bhubaneswar. He was the publications Chair for the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and RF Symposium (IMaRC) held in Bangalore in December He co-organized sessions on EM/microwave education during IMaRC 2014 and International Symposiumm on Antennas and Propagation, Kochi, Selvan founded the Madras Chapter of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) in 2013, and has been the Chapter Chair since then. Selvan is a member of the Education Committee of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He is an AP-S Region 10 Distinguished Speaker for Selvan is a senior member of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), and a Life Member of the Society of EMC Engineers (India). Planar Antennas Dr.S.Raghavan, Professor, ECE Department, NIT-Trichy Planar Antenna which has the advantages of low profile, compatibility with integrated circuit technology and conformability is the solution for the requirements of many applications. Planar antennas find usage in military applications such as aircraft, missiles, rockets, commercial areas such as mobile satellite communications, the Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) system, global position system (GPS), Health care, remote sensing etc. The back bone of planar antennas is planar transmission lines. Planar transmission lines include Stripline, Microstrip, Slot line, coplanar waveguide, coplanar strips, Fin line and Substrate Integrated Waveguide. The lecture topic includes the essentials of planar transmission lines, design fundamentals of planar antennas and the transmission line analysis approach.
5 Speaker s biography Dr.S.Raghavan is a senior Professor in Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, National Institute of Technology (N.I.T.), Trichy and has 33 years of teaching and Research experience. His interest includes Microwave Integrated Circuits, RF MEMS, BioMEMS, Metamaterial and Microwave Engineering. Proud research scholar of Prof.Bharathi Bhat and Prof.SK Koul, CARE, IIT Delhi, has established state of the art Microwave Integrated Circuit and Microwave Laboratory in N.I.T., Trichy with the help of Govt.Of India funding. Won Best Teacher award twice and conferred with Honorary Fellowship of Ancient Sciences and Archaeological Society of India, Short time visiting Fellow in California State University, North Ridge, USA. Awarded to conduct Tutorial in APEMC 2010, Beijing, China. Organizing Chair of Indian Antenna Week 2014, Chandigarh. Invited to be a session chair in PIERS 2013 symposium Taipei, Taiwan. Hs to his credit 80 research papers in International Journals, 70 in IEEExplore, 130 International conferences, 26 National conferences. Guided more than 8 Ph.D.scholars. Senior Member/Fellow in more than 20 international and national Professional Societies including IEEE, IEI, IETE, CSI, TSI. Organized various workshops of national importance. Has contributed lot in the development of state of the art Library and Hospital in NIT T. Was President of R.E.C.,Trichy. Faculty association for 2 years. Made an impact in MICROWAVE ENGINEERING EDUCATION among student community at large. Base station antennas for mobile broadband systems Ms.Sheela M. Krishnaswami, Independent RF consultant, Chennai The demand for mobile communicationn and broadband services has grown rapidly in recent times. Besides adding cell sites, sectors and bandwidth the operators danced antenna configurations with their existing radio access systems to augment the capacity of their wireless networks. More and more radio architectures and antennas are developed to take advantage of diversity, MIMO and beam-forming techniques and also support multiple wireless technologies and multiple frequency bands simultaneously. Integrationn of the radio and antenna is also taking place in more cases, to minimize the site foot-print and costs. This talk focuses on the advancements, challenges and trends in base station antenna scenario. Speaker s biography Ms. Sheela M. Krishnaswami received B.E (Honours) degree in ECE from University of Madras, M.E. degree in Applied Electronics from Anna University and M.Eng degree by research from National University of Singapore. She has over 30 years of combined experience in R&D, consultancy and teaching. She has held R&D positions at ISRO Satellite Center, SAMEER, C-DOT Alcatel Lucent Research Center, Tait Electronics, NZ, Lucent Technologies, USA and Andrew Corporation, USA. She has served as Professor ECE at Saranathan college of Engg., Trichy, Meenakshi college of Engg., Chennai, and Mandsaur Inst. Of Technology, Mandasaur. She has experience in designing RF/Microwave circuits for terrestrial microwave link, satellite transmitter, land mobile radio, WCDMA base station and WiMAX MIMO CPE applications. She also has experience in EMI/EMC research.
