5 ACUMESH OVERVIEW The AcuMesh w ireless RS485 network solution is designed to connect energy m eters and any devices by com m unicating w ith RS485 w irelessly. AcuMesh is a costeffective solution that elim inates the need for installation of com m unication w ires. Saving prem ium tim e, labour, and reducing the challenges of retrofit applications. LONGER, RELIA BLE COMMUNICATION The AcuMesh w ireless system m akes use of the Mesh network structure w hich allows each transceiver to act as extension points in the network allowing for larger range of com m unication. Using this Mesh arrangem ent for com m unication allow s for point to m ulti-point com m unication. This solution enables autom atic selfhealing to optim ize the com m unication pathway for a m ore reliable com m unication. Pg: 3

6 A PPLICATION S The AcuMesh wireless transceiver can be deployed in follow ing applications: Power and Energy Metering in Com m ercial buildings, Malls Subm etering and Tenant Billing for Entire Apartm ent, Condom inium s Education Facilities and Cam pus Industrial and Factory Facilities Renewable Energy Generation such as Solar PV, Wind and etc Any network w ith device using RS485 com m unication w ith any protocols HA RDWARE OVERVIEW AcuMesh is available as two types of transcievers, these two types of transceivers have no functional difference. Standalone transceiver that can connect to any device via RS485 or PC and gateways. AXM-Mesh transceiver m odule that can only be attached to the Acuvim II series m eters. Pg: 4

8 INSTA LLATION CHECKLIST You ll need to confirm these details before successfully com pleteing the installation of your AcuMesh system : AcuMesh wireless system requires a m inim um of two transceivers to form the network. The RS485 network m aster device can be a PC, PLC, data acquisition server or gateway, e.g. AcuLink 710 Data Acq uisition Server. The slave devices can be our Acuvim II series power m eters or any other m eter or sensor with RS485 port. If it is the Acuvim II m eter, the AXM-Mesh transceiver m odule should be used, for other devices the stand alone transceiver should be used. Pg: 6

9 Two types of Transceivers and two antenna choices. STA NDA LONE TRA NSCEIVER The transceiver can easily be powered by connected it to the USB port of a com puter. The AcuMesh transceiver can also be powered using a standard power supply of Vac or from an auxiliary wall socket to be powered. Note: When the transceiver is connected to a gateway, PLC or power m eter through the RS485 port then the transceiver m ust be powered using the external power supply. The AXM-MESH m odule is directly powered by the Acuvim II series m eter that it is connected to. There are two sets of LED lights on the transceiver that indicate the transceivers behaviour. The RSSI LED s indicate the signal strength of the incom ing signal. 3 LEDs ON - Very Strong Signal 2 LEDs ON - Strong Signal 1 LED ON - Moderate Signal 0 LED ON - Weak Signal The Power LED s indicates the activity of the transceiver. The yellow LED indicates the transceiver is transm itting data. The green LED indicates the transceiver is receiving data, the red LED indicates the transceiver is powered on or it is com m unicating (the red light is on when powered, off briefly during RF transm ission). Sw itch 1 should always be in the off position for half-duplex com m unication. Sw itch 2 is for full-duplex com m unication. This switch should not be configured as m ost devices only support half-duplex com m unication. The reset button is used to reboot the transceiver. It is equivalent of power cycle the transceiver. 11 A XM-MESH MODULE With the AXM-Mesh m odule attached to the m eter, the m eter should be configured w ith the follow ing settings to com m unicate: Mesh By changing the Protocol 2 setting to Mesh in the m eter this w ill autom atically change the Baud rate 2 setting in the m eter to 9600 and Parity 2 to None1 If the m eter does not have Mesh option in Protocol 2, please set Baud rate 2 and Parity 2 to 9600 and None1 respectively. For other m eters or devices that com m unicate through a RS485 port, the devices m ust have the following settings to com m unicate w ith the transceiver: 9600 None1 (Or Parity None, stop bit 1) The Acuvim II m eters and any other RS485 connected devices in the network should be assigned w ith a unique Modbus address from The standalone transceiver can only be connected either via USB or via RS485 at any tim e. 12 The AcuMesh RS485 wireless network set up is com plete. You are now able to com m unicate w irelessly w ith all RS45 devices in the network. The AcuMesh w ireless RS485 network is pre-configured to work out of box. No softw are configuration is required. Proceed w ith caution to advance user setting below, you w ill not need to use the AcuMesh software to have the AcuMesh Wireless RS485 network working, only use the software if you have knowledge of w ireless network properties. Two types of Transceivers and two antenna choices. By default, all the transceivers are configured in the sam e network. The transceivers w ill be configured w ith the default network ID of 7FFF. For advanced configurations such as configuring transceivers to work in a different network, our AcuMesh software needs to be used. A transceiver m ust be connected to a PC to perform any network configuration. Open the AcuMesh software. The follow ing screen will appear. Pg: 10

13 To begin, the software w ill need to locate the transceiver that is connected to the com puter s USB port. Click on the to discover the Com port that the transceiver is connected to. Select the Com port and click on Finish. Click on the discovered transceiver to view and configure the settings related to this transceiver. Pg: 11

14 The right side of the w indow w ill display the inform ation and settings related to the transceiver under the Radio Configuration view. To configure a rem ote transceiver in the network, the transceiver needs to be in rem ote control m ode (More inform ation can be found below) Pg: 12

All transceivers need to be configured with the sam e Network ID to com m unicate w ith each other. Transceivers with different Network ID w ill not be able to join the w ireless network. This param eter is for enabling an encryption for the transceiver in the network. If the EE Encryption Enable param eter is enabled then an Encryption key needs to be enter. This key m ust be set between 0-32 characters in Hexadecim al. Every transceiver m ust have the Encryption Key correctly configured to join the network. Pg: 13

16 More inform ation can be found on each setting by clicking on the sym bol besides each param eter. TRANSCEIVER INFORMATION: This param eter is for assigning the transceiver with a nam e so it can be easily identified in the network w hen searching for transceivers. By default, no identifier is assigned to the transceivers. A read only param eter for returning the upper 32 bits of the 64 bit unique assigned address to the transceiver. A read only param eter for returning the lower 32 bits of the 64 bit unique assigned address to the transceiver. Pg: 14

17 STAND-ALONE TRANSCEIVER CONFIGURATION: For the transceiver to com m unicate w ith other transceivers in the network this param eter m ust be set in AT-Com m unication Mode [0]. To configure an individual transceiver, this param eter m ust be set to AP1- Rem ote Control Mode[1]. If the transceiver is connected via a RS485 port then this param eter m ust be set to RS485 Enable High. Pg: 15

18 SERIAL INTERFACING: The baud rate for serial com m unication between the serial port of the m odule and the host. Default setting is Parity for the serial com m unication. Default is None 1. Num ber of stop bits used in the serial com m unication. Default is one stop bit. To discover other transceivers w ithin the network press the besides the transceiver that is connected to the com puter s USB port under the Radio Modules m enu. Pg: 16

19 All the rem ote devices that are in the sam e network as this transceiver that are found will appear in the pop up box. Press Add Selected Devices. Once added, these rem ote devices w ill appear under the local standalone transceiver and w ill be denoted as rem ote m odules. By default these rem ote m odules will be identified by their MAC Address. Pg: 17

20 To configure the settings for the rem ote m odules, select the rem ote m odule you w ish to configure and its inform ation w ill load under the radio configuration view, transceiver. The settings for the rem ote m odules are identical to that of the local Pg: 18

21 If you change the Network ID setting of a rem ote m odule, it w ill lose connection and w ill be lost im m ediately. In such case, the network setting in the local transceiver needs to be m odified w ith this Network ID so that the local and rem ote m odules can com m unicate.
