1. General Description 1.1 Introduction SMR5000F is part of the 5000 long-range radio alarm system family. It is a smart store and forward FM RF data repeater in the VHF MHz band and UHF MHz band. It relays messages from remote transmitter end-units to a radio communication center or to other repeaters. The SMR5000F repeats messages to the radio communication center from transmitter end-units over large distances. After receiving a message from a transmitter end-unit, SMR5000F checks the content and forwards the message to the radio communication center. Messages are encoded with a sophisticated code for error detection. SMR5000F parameters can be adapted to the network configuration in which it is integrated. System parameters - station address, system address, re-transmission delay time, periodic test, alarm/restore codes, etc. - are set using the PC application GUP Physical Description SMR5000F is enclosed in a weatherproof metal cabinet and contains the following main modules (see Figure 1): - Digital encoder/decoder (ED5000 ) based on an ATMEL T89C51ED2 microcontroller - FM radio transceiver in the VHF MHz band, or UHF MHz band - Switching AC power supply - Two rechargeable 12 VDC 7Ah batteries for backup power in case of AC loss 1. 6 1.3 Principal of Operation When SMR5000F receives a message from a transmitter end-unit, it operates as a repeater. Its built-in microcontroller performs the following procedures: - Tests the message's validity and processes it; invalid messages are rejected. Messages received from a transmitter belonging to a system other than that to which it is configured (by GUP50000 ), are also rejected. - Switches from standby/receiving mode to transmit mode. - It can also retransmit messages from other repeaters or block such messages according to the configuration set by the GUP5000. The SMR5000F then re-transmits the digitally coded message through its FM RF transceiver to the center. It re-transmits every valid message, including identical words and repetitions. This redundancy guarantees that the message reaches its destination, even under difficult communication conditions. SMR5000F is a store-and-forward type repeater, which means that it can receive and retransmit on the same frequency, making it compatible with a single frequency network. All SMR5000F setup parameters are in software (no dipswitches). 2. Physical Description 2.1 ED5000 Module The ED5000 module is the brain of the SMR5000. It contains all required hardware and software for operating the SMR5000. Figure 2-1: ED5000 (Encoder/Decoder) Main Components 1. I/O Connector 2. TX LED 3. Tx Test/RX LED 4. On-Board Upgrade Mode 6 5. CI Interface (not in use) 6. Bus (BarLED) connector 7. RF Transceiver Interface 8. Tx Test button The main purpose of the ED5000 module is to convert analog signals coming from the RF transceiver to digital signals, analyze them, convert them to analog and send them again to the RF transceiver.
2.1.1 I/O Connector With its 8 inputs connected to sensors, it is capable of transmitting different alarm/restore messages along with other system messages, as detailed below. The alarm/restore code and polarity for the inputs can be modified by GUP5000 (the default code for the alarm is A1-A9, & for restore B1-B9; the default polarity is normally close): - 8 alarm messages, one for each of the inputs connected, whenever their status changes (two of these inputs are already allocated: input 3 - for door open, and input 4 - for the AC fail mechanism). - 8 restore messages whenever an input status returns to normal (same as for the alarm messages). - 1 test message (transmitted by pressing the test button). - Alarm code AB when the ED5000 is prompted before modification (e.g., when connecting the GUP5000 ). - Alarm code BB when the system configuration is modified (i.e., when the GUP5000 actually changes a parameter). - Alarm & restore code for low battery: A9 (alarm), B9 (restore) LEDs There are three LEDs on the ED5000 module. One LED (D1) is on-board power indication. When it s on it means the ED5000 module has 5V on board. The other two LEDs (D2 and D3) are for statuses indication. D2 (PTT) D3 Status Off 1 Blink ED5000 Receive Message 1 Blink Off ED5000 Transmit Message (LED is on will transmitting) Off 6 Blinks Low Battery Indication Easy Software Version Upgrade ED5000 can be programmed on-board for software update/upgrade. To do so, it need to move the jumpers to program mode (see paragraph 8.1 for more details) Bar-LED ED5000 is measuring the strength of the incoming signal and display it on an 8-bit bar-led module connected to this connector RF Transceiver Interface The RF transceiver interface is a 9-pin connector that with special cable supplied by KP, the ED5000 module is connected directly to the transceiver. 2.2 Radio Transceiver The transceiver receives and transmits FSK (frequency shift keying) and DF (direct frequency) modulated signals in VHF and UHF bands. It operates in half duplex mode of communication. For more details refer to the transceiver user manual. For BSR100/BSRU100 transceiver use the GUP5000 to configure transmit and receive frequencies and the TX timeout. 7
3. SMR5000F Features The SMR5000F starts operating as soon as it is connected to the AC mains or to its internal backup battery. At startup the SMR5000F retrieves from its memory all required system parameters and initializes some other parameters. After that it transmit a test message. Almost all SMR5000 parameters are configured with the GUP5000 software application. 3.1 Features and Parameters Set by GUP Protocol The SMR5000F is a multi protocol smart repeater that supports LARS, LARS-I and MEGANET protocols Selective System The SMR5000F will retransmit messages from a specific system/s address. User can define from zero to MAX systems to be selected, where MAX represents maximum number of systems in selected protocol. By default all systems are selected Number Of Words (Burst) The SMR5000F can send a message (burst message) that it s combined from multiple same messages (words). The number of words in a transmitted burst can be from 0 (no transmission) to Retransmit Delay There is a delay between the time a message is received and the time it is transmitted. This time delay allows the repeater to re-transmit a message after a preset delay time. This feature is important in systems using more than one repeater, such as in metropolitan areas, where two identical incoming messages might cancel each other if they are received simultaneously. The time can be from 0 (no delay) to 3000msec (3sec) Repeat Repeaters The SMR5000F can retransmit or block messages that came from other repeater Repeater Address The SMR5000F has a specific address as all devices in the network Alarm and Test Repetitions The SMR5000F can retransmit the same message several times. In cases where the central monitoring station returns acknowledge for the received message the SMR will stop transmitting the burst. Number of repetitions can be from 0 (no repeat) to Signal Measurement The signal-strength meter measures the level of the signals received from the transmitters. The strength of each signal gives the central monitoring station an additional tool for improving the analysis of the complex communication network it controls. User can define if the repeater will measure and transmit the signal level or not. To assure accurate Signal Strength Measurement results, three parameters have to be in full matching: HW signals between RF transceiver and ED5000 must be connect properly. Audio gain has to be set to the required level. SMR5000 internal measurement tables to match specific RF transceiver type and frequency range. 8
While ordering a new SMR5000F unit, the SMR5000F is factory set to measuring using the supplied RF transceiver radio unit. If a local transceiver is to be connected to SMR5000 by customer, please contact KP s technical support Signal Level ID Signal level ID is the repeater s ID in the Ran-Man software. The signal level measured by the SMR5000F can be displayed on the Ran-Man software on any bar between 0 and 15. Selecting the bar is made by setting the repeater s signal level ID Input Delay The SMR5000F can be configured to wait a while between an input transition and its alarm message transmission. The waiting time can be between 0 (no wait) to 10sec Filter Time SMR5000F compares the message received to all messages received during a time set (between 5-255sec). If the new arriving message is identical to a message received during this time, the repeater will not send it Input Polarity and Code The 8 inputs of the ED5000 can be defined to be normally open or normally close; also user can change alarm/restore codes for each input Channel Monitor SMR5000F can be set to check (or not) channel status (busy or free) before retransmitting Specific Protocol Parameters The SMR5000F is a multi protocol smart repeater that supports LARS, LARS I and MEGANET LARS, LARS-I Parity - Set message parity. Signal Measurement - The signal-strength meter measures the level of only the test signals received from the transmitters MEGANET Burst Meganet protocol can retransmit a count message and also transmit the RSSI data it measured. The SMR5000 first transmit the count and then the RSSI. Signal Measurement - The signal-strength meter measures the level of all signals received from the transmitters. 3.2 System Status Reports The SMR5000F sends to the central monitoring station AC fail and low battery events. When the low battery event occur the SMR5000F sends an alarm message immediately and when a AC fail event occur, the SMR5000F wait some period of time that as been configured by the GUP5000 and then transmit an alarm message. The period of time can be between 0 (no wait) to 60 minutes. 9

Connect a suitable RF antenna to the UHF connector located at the bottom of the metal cabinet. Ensure the coax cable connecting the antenna to the repeater is as short as possible. For test purposes only, a 50Ω dummy load can be mounted on the connector. 5. Connecting Sensors to the ED5000 User Connector The 12-pin user connector in the ED5000 module is factory wired. - 3 first terminals: VS, GND and COM are for battery connection. - 8 terminals: IN1 IN8 for connecting sensors or other alarm devices. - Terminal 12: Not in use. Note: The repeater is pre-set so that inputs IN3, IN4 are for open door alarm and AC fail alarm 6. Connecting the Batteries and AC Two red wires and two black wires are provided for connecting the batteries. To Connect the Battery 1. Open the door of the metal cabinet that contains SMR5000F. 2. Connect one red wire to one battery plus (+) terminal, and connect one black wire to the respective battery minus (-) terminal. Repeat this procedure for the second battery. 3. Return the metal cabinet door to the closed position. To Connect the AC Main WARNING! SMR5000F uses high voltage AC 220V or 110V. Disconnect the unit from the power source before commencing any service work. 1. Insert a 220/110 VAC mains cable through the sleeve at the base of the metal cabinet. 2. Connect the mains cable to the AC connector. 3. Plug in AC mains. (When AC power is supplied, the repeater both charges the batteries and becomes operational.) 21
7. Initial Operation, Power Up and Testing The following procedures must be performed for the initial operation, power up and testing: - Battery Charging - Powering Up - Performing Self-Test - Testing Direct Input Transmission - Testing Repeater Setup 7.1 Battery Charging Charge the batteries for about four hours. No special procedures are required. When the repeater is connected to the AC power source, the batteries are charged automatically. 7.2 Powering Up Connect the batteries, and plug in the AC. 7.3 Testing Direct Input Transmission Using a short wire, briefly short any of the 8 alarm inputs to the COM (pin 6) terminal. This causes alarm messages to be transmitted. The PTT LED flashes once for each message burst. This indicates that the direct-input message transmission is being performed correctly. 7.4 Testing Repeater Setup Set an alarm transmitter (KP model ATS100 or other transmitter) to the same system address as the repeater s (see the ATS100 User Guide). Press the transmitter s self-test button. The transmitter should indicate that a test message is being transmitted (the PTT LED flashes once). Immediately observe both the PTT LED and the test/acknowledge LED on the encoder of the repeater. If the two LEDs flash almost simultaneously, this indicates that the repeater has received and re-transmitted the transmitter's message and that the setup is, therefore, correct. 22
