1 London Bridge Amateur Radio Association November 2013 WINGS, WHEELS, AND WAVES L BARA DEMONSTRATES HAM RADIO TO THE COMMUNITY LBARA participated in the Lake Havasu City Airport Open House on Saturday, November 11th. Along with the aircraft displays, automobiles, and other venders the Club set up a display of ham radio and our Emergency Communications trailer. The Club had an operating HF station as well as local VHF operations. We had approximately 40 people stop by and express interest in what the Club was doing to provide emergency communications. A few even picked up some flyers and inquired on how to become a ham. The code practice keyer was a big hit too. Lyle Ross(W6TPT), the event Chairman, was assisted by Club members: Jim Varner(AE6N), Dick Jernigan(W7DXJ), Carl Schiller(W7CRL), Charlie Kotan(K0TAN), and Tom Hutter(K7THJ).

3 Lake Havasu City ARES Post Exercise Report November 6 th, 2013, State wide Power Outage Drill By Tom Hutter, K7TJH LHC EC The Lake Havasu City ARES team responded to the state wide drill with a total of eight members participating: K0TAN - Charlie Kotan, K7LY - Jerry France, K7YQ - Lyle Sibbald, K7TJH - Tom Hutter, N6BRH - Bruce Hunt, W7CRL - Carl Schiller, W7DXJ - Dick Jernigan, and WB5VUH - Bob Ideker. Two team members, N6BRH Bruce and K7YQ Lyle, were deployed to the local Red Cross shelter at the Lake High School at approximately 07:00 hrs. They supported the Red Cross operations by providing licensed radio operators to set up and operate their amateur radio equipment. They maintained contact with the ARES team using VHF and were successful in communicating with the Red Cross Net on HF radio. The Lake Havasu City ARES team activated the emergency communications trailer at 07:30 hrs and set up a wire antenna in an inverted vee configuration, directly outside of the Lake Havasu City EOC at Fire Station #2 on Kiowa Blvd. The UHF link to our other ARES teams in the cities of Bullhead and Kingman was not connected and would not connect; this resulted in the need to use VHF net (W7DXJ) locally to establish communications with all team members. The trailer HF radio was tested at 08:20 hrs and a communications check was conducted on MHz with KD7MIA - Bill Smith, Mohave County DEC in Bullhead; the test was successful. Bill was advised that we were going to contact and monitor the State RACES NCS W7IO at MHz. The ARES team initiated contact as K7LHC with the State RACES NCS, W7IO - Gary Hamman, at approximately 08:38 hrs on MHz, the contact was successful. At approximately 09:15 hrs the NCS advised the net that he would be checking propagation on 40 meters MHz. All stations changed frequency to 7.252, and contacted the NCS W7IO. The test was successful and improved our ability to hear Kingman and Bullhead as well as other stations around the state. The Net then returned to 75 meters at MHz. At approximately 10:30 hrs band conditions on 75 meters made it necessary to change to 40 meters at MHz as the primary net frequency. The ARES team re-established contact with the Net NCS on the MHz frequency and continued to maintain check in s and monitor net traffic. The LHC ARES team with permission of the NCS attempted to contact TOAD #1, NF7D - Bob in Kingman at approximately 13:15 hrs, but was unsuccessful. It was later determined, Toad #1, had shut down at approximately 12:15 hrs. At approximately 13:45 hrs with the Lake Havasu City EOC shut down; the NCS was advised that we were going off the air, and the emergency communications trailer was deactivated. All equipment was shut down and made ready for storage. 3

A few hardy souls from LBARA agreed to make the trip up the mountain and bring down the repeater for repairs. This repeater is used for the APRS site in Lake Havasu City. It also provides the out-going data from the Club s weather station located on Lake Havasu to the National Weather Service in Las Vega as well as interested parties on the APRS system s internet site. The Static Editor heard this one from one of the mountain men and it went something like this. it was a trip of a lifetime, but I don t think I ll ever try this again! 5
