Program Review Title: Program Code: Review Type: Type: Chaffey College Program Review Report Photography PHOTOGRAPHY Instructional SLO's Overview of Chaffey College Program: Describe the program mission as it relates to the college mission: The Photography program centers around three major learning components: vocational, academic transfer, and general education. The vocational emphasis focuses on giving students the skills to enter the competitive field of commercial photography, such as studio photography, wedding photography and portraiture. This includes important technology-based skills that are currently expected for this type of position. We also strive to assist photographers within the community to retrain in a continually evolving field. The department also prepares students for academic transfer to art and photography programs in four-year universities. Students earn either a vocational certificate or an A.A. degree in photography, but we strive to prepare them to continue their education. Our goal is to guide students to make informed choices and assist them in their transition into the field of photography or a challenging academic setting. Some of the photography courses also meet the general education requirements such as Photo 1, 10, and 13, which are also transfer courses. We have a strong commitment to providing an infrastructure for students obtain the technology-based skills that currently challenging the field. The photography industry is shifting radically from a chemical based medium to digital capture and output. It is our intention to keep pace with the industry so that our students are informed and highly desirable within this creative field. Our certificate now includes two digitally based classes; Photo 7 Introduction to Digital Photography and Photo 9 Digital Imaging. Through a combination of a solid foundation and an understanding of the practice of image making including Photo History and Design, as well as, comprehensive training in both traditional photographic processes, studio lighting and innovations of imaging through technology, we hope to prepare a diverse group of students for either an exciting vocational career or a successful transfer toward the goal of a BFA from a four-year university. Responses to Prior Year PSR Prior Year's Recommendations and recommendation Commendations The Discipline should be commended for: 1. Providing well thought out responses to last year's recommendations. 2. Linking budget requests to Student Learning Outcomes. Recommendations As the Discipline's needs for new equipment exceeds what the district appears to be willing or able to fund, the Discipline may want to consider the following: 1. Limiting the scope of the program. 2. Developing internship or community classroom opportunities to lesson the need for equipment. 3. Developing a multiyear equipment acquisition plan. Program Changes NONE State how program/service addressed these recommendations It is unclear to us where this recommendation could have come from. We assume it
is a mistake. 1. We have not asked for equipment the district can't fund. Limiting the scope of a progam that is very successful makes no sense and is out of the scope & perview of program review. 2. This is really is a continuation of response # 1 it only show a lack of understanding of the current photography program. We do have internships opportunities. It is unclear what community classroom opportunities means, but neither would reduce the need for the program to keep current with the changing technologies. 3. There is not place to address multi-year equipment acquisition in PSR. New Activities and Outcomes 1. Photography Transfer AA & Certificate program 1. Identify 3-5 learning outcome for each program in this discipline(add one at a time): 1. Students will have a concrete foundation in the technical use of the appropriate photographic technologies as it pertains to the photography program and the visual arts. 2.Students will be able to articulate and express themselves and their idea/concepts through the use of the appropriate photography technologies. 3. Students will have the critical thinking skills required to remain competitive in the job market and to transfer. 4. Students will be able to work with photographic and visual ideas both independently and in group situations. 5.Students will have and demonstrate sensitivity & respect for the diversity of peoples within the community of artists that they will become a part of as well as within the workplaces where they will be employed & become good global citizens. Provide an assessment statement for one outcome for each program articulating the following (means of assessment, population to be assessed, point of assessment, and criteria for assessment): We have not yet started assessment. What were the results of the assessment for the outcome. If no data has yet been collected, please describe the plans for assessment: n/a Describe the response to the assessment results for the learning outcome (noting whether or not the assessment satisfactorily confirmed the outcome or indicating what instructional modifications will to be made for improvement) If no data is yet available, then this section does not apply: n/a Requests Faculty Request Category: Title: Photography Instructor Priority: 1 FTE: 1 Previous Recommended: YES - Number of times: 3 Employee Status: New Overload: YES Fulltime for our dept is 1.4 FTEF due to the reassignment of Ardon Alger for 70% (so technically there are two FTEF for photo). The adjunct/overload proportion for Photo is equal to an additional 4.06 FTEF. These numbers were taken from the data provided in this program
review Classified Requests Category: Title: Digital slide library technician Priority: 1 FTE:.475 Previous Recommended: YES - Number of times: 2 Employee Status: New We are requesting a position to help research, set up and maintain digital image/slide library. The digital image library would be for student and faculty use. We need to provide a consistent, clear and continually updated database of images in this visually oriented field. Slide projectors are becoming obsolete and there is no way to effectively "share" our individual collections. This is also very important because the cost of books with up to date and clear color imagery has become astronomical for our students Outside Services Category: Augnmentation for judging Photo contest for Fall/Winter and Spring Student shows Price: Total Cost: 400 Recommended For No Purchase: Purchased: No We currently have $ in this account and that is the same amount for the last 20 years. We had to stop providing an outside judge for the Fall/Winter show due to lack of funds. We would like to have an outside judge for both shows. Hakuba Carbon Fiber Tripod HG-503MX with 3-way Pan Head (PH-G40) Freestyle Model: 2503 with case Price: $349 1 Total: $3839 Students in beginning classes need to shoot in low lighting and interiors as part of assignments. They must use a tripod for this. These tripods will work with 35mm and medium format. This equipment will last longer than 3 years and can be repaired. Zoom lens EF mm f/2.8l USM Zoom Lens

The faster lens is important for indoor shooting Epson Printer Epson Stylus Pro 4880 Portrait Edition Printer and Imageprint RIP Price: $3,595 Total: $3595 Epson Printer Epson Stylus Pro 4880 Portrait Edition Printer and Imageprint RIP. The print will be placed in VSS103 Canon EOS 40D DSLR with 17-85mm Lens with case Price: 1,799 0 Total: $17990 The EOS 40D takes mid-range Digital SLRs to exciting heights with enhanced resolution and image quality, faster shooting and processing speeds and better overall functionality than ever before. It combines features like Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function, a more powerful DIGIC III Image Processor, plus a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.0-inch LCD monitor and more Historical photograph pictures and picture cases set Price: $750 Total: $750 The Photo History class need to see examples of historical photography to understand what the picture really look like and how they are presented.
Slides can t show how early work really look. This would cover three classes including off campus classes. Wireless lighting triggering, PocketWizard Plus II sets include 2 transceivers and cables Price: 2,225 Quantity: 5 Total: $11125 The professional standard triggering lighting on location (off camera lights) is wireless. It work where wired will not is a piece of equipment all interns need to know as it is also used in many studio as well. We have only 3 sets to cover our 75 users Lighting tool: Full set or Softboxes with grids and speed ring Price: 2,819 Total: $2819 Softboxes are a standard light tool. These are part of a full set (6 pieces) some but they are 15 years old and worn out. In addition, the grid that works with the lights is now a standard professional tool, which we don t have. They are used together. Professional on camera flash For professional cameras: $428 including tax and shipping Price: 428 Quantity: 6 0 Total: $2568 The ability to use professional on camera flash it required for our photography certificate. We current have only 6 professional on-camera flashes. Each semester we have 2-4 classes theat require students to use the flashes. Six are just not enough for students to learn how to use the them. This equipment will last at least 3 years and is repairable.
Battery power pack for studio lights Price: 2,387 Total: $2387 This new technology is important to students to learn for entry-level jobs in photography. The power pack will work with our current studio equipment. Location studio lighting equipment: Profoto power pack, heads, stands, cables and cases Price: 2,898 Quantity: 4 Total: $11592 We are creating a new location light class at the request of our Vocational Advisory Committee and the students. This equipment is necessary for this class. Check out lighting equipment: Force 10 mono lights, with stands and cases. Price: 1,217 Quantity: 4 Total: $4868 Our lighting studio has only 4 stations, for studio students to complete their assignments many students must check out lighting equipment and work at home. We need to 4 more lights and accessories to meet the student demand. Wireless Canon Wireless Transmitter Set Price: 1486 Total: $1486 This lets us demonstrate and have students shoot pictures and send them to a computer monitor so the class and the instructor cans see the results. This is an important learning tool for students.
Eizo color edge monitor CG241W Price: 2,500 Total: $2500 This monitor is an industry standard and is necessary for accurate screen to print matching. It This monitor will be located in VSS 103 G5 Mac computer (to run the photo printers and state of the art scanner) Price: 7,500 Total: $7500 The current computer is outdated, and we are adding additional digital photo classes. All the photo printing runs through this computer, it is causing a slow down in student accessing their prints. It also would drive our to large scale printer and archive. It will be located in VSS 103 and used by students General Supplies Category: Supplies for Digital Photography Price: 2,000 Total Cost: 2000 Approve For Purchase: Yes Purchased: No We have a new digital program that started this year, it has no supply budget. The program can not survive without additional funds. We are currently living of funds borrowed from other areas and the Dean & President's one time funding which can't continue General Supplies Category: Student supplies for Student Invitational Show Price: 2,000 Total Cost: 2000 Approve For Purchase: Yes Purchased: No Recommended by Program Review for at least the last seven years. This exhibition brings in a large number of people from the community every
year and is a part of our Art, Digital Media, and Photography programs that is much admired by other two and four-year colleges. Students who participate in this exhibition are the ones who transfer and go on to earn 4-year and advanced degrees, eventually making a significant contribution to the art field. This reflects very positively on Chaffey College. Despite its importance it has no budget earmarked for it in any of the departments involved, nor at the Wignall. This money would be used for student supplies. Because the supplies are often costly, we believe this may prohibit some students from even applying to the Invitational. This budget augmentation could help defray some of those costs. This is a joint request from the Photo, Art, and Digital Media Depts. It is not the same the Museum/Gallery's request for funds.
