ATEDEC EDC MULTIMEDIA TEACHING INTRODUCTION Action Technique Pour un Developpement au Communautaire (ATEDEC) is a non-government organisation based in Rwanda. ATEDEC works to assist and provide a voice for at risk youth, women and other vulnerable populations to ensure their social, economic and cultural well being; and to provide hope and confidence to these groups by encouraging their active involvement in the development of Rwanda. ATEDEC s work is with vulnerable people men, women, children, victims of abuse, orphans, the very poor and those living with HIV/AIDS. It is essential that the beneficiaries of ATEDEC s activities have full trust and confidence in the organisation and that ATEDEC s work is always in their best interests. PURPOSE ATEDEC have been involved in youth projects for the last year. After completing Work Readiness in the Akazi Kanoze livelihood project with 83 students (mostly school dropouts), ATEDEC is planning to intensify its youth activity by introducing EDC multimedia teaching. The vision of this new chapter of youth, is to give Work Readiness graduates and other school dropouts courses in multimedia, and give them the tools to start a new business by combining their multimedia knowledge with skills already achieved in Work Readiness. Since multimedia is a major topic with many facilities, ATEDEC have decided to focus the teachings on 3 main topics: Photography/videography Computer Energy These topics will be taught extensively and combined. Each topic includes content linked to the other topics. A photographer must know about editing on the computer. We aim to minimize the gap between these 3 topics in order to make the overall content as useful as possible.
THE PROJECT INTRODUCTION Our Educational Development Centre project is designed to improve the lives of young people who due to difficult life circumstances have no opportunities for employment. Many of our trainees have no parents, none have been able to finish secondary school and all are in a state of poverty. From our centres in Kigali, we work to empower 100 of these vulnerable young people per year. Currently, we train students in work readiness preparing them for life in the work place. This training includes entrepreneurial and financial skills enabling our students to work for themselves if they choose. Students receive Basic skills training in computer literacy and maintenance and repair of computers. They also learn photography, filming and music technology. These subjects have been chosen to match skills gaps in the current jobs market in Rwanda. The trainees carry out internship programmes in different organisations in the public and private sector. PROGRESS There are four phases to the EDC programme: 1. Work Readiness training 2. Complementary training 3. Internship and 4. Employment Facilitation. PAST EXPERIENCE OF ATEDEC AND THE FUTURE ATEDEC HAS TRAINED 100 YOUTH IN WORK READINESS SKILLS We are now planning to start Complimentary Skills training which is introduced in this proposal. After finishing this stage, we will help our studests find a company for internship. After that we help them get employed is some company ore build their own business. Therefore we already contacted cogebank to give them credits for own equipment.
TO MAKE VISIONS REACHABLE... MULTIMEDIA TEACHING by ATEDEC
From understanding the basics of Digital Photography to advanced shooting modes and pro tecnics... DSLR s For our photography teaching ATEDEC decided to use DSLR cameras. They include the possibility to manually control exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture and ISO), also half automatic modes like shutter-priority (S), and aperture priority (A) and depth of field priority (DOF) are included which is optimal for students to fully understand the physics of shooting. DSLR s bigger sensors and high quality lenses shoot realistic images of superior optical quality. They also include the ability to change lenses. Shooting with various focal lengths is essential to learn different styles of photography. The third advantage of DSLR s is their ability to shoot full HD video in brilliant quality and with manual controllable settings. Our Filming School (explained in detail on the next page) is going to use DSLR s for teaching advanced filmography. WHATS INSIDE? Why is it called Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera? Lessons about the mechanisms and the Functions of DSLR Cameras Basics about components: Sensors (especially Cmos {Canon}), shutter, viewfinder, image processors Basics about lenses: Focal length, prime and zoom lenses, autofocus and manual focus, lens elements, aspherical lenses, distortion, chromatic aberrations (fluorite and UD elements) and optical image stabilization.
SHOOTING PROFESSIONAL Settings can have a great effect on how the image looks. We will go through every setting and compare results to fully understand. Topics like shutter speed or depth of field will be explained in detail. Together with setting goes the planning of the shot. Everything from the shooting location to light conditions and shooting subject must be analysed and settings adjusted accordingly. Only a sensitive and professional way of working leads to good results. Our students shall get introduced to this coherency. All about TAKING THE IMAGE different shooting styles ( landscape, portrait, macro...) picture style, white balance settings on the camera for optimal performance. Shooting practise: What makes a perfect shot? Framing objects, people, landscapes... Shooting plan Exposure
From understanding the basics of Digital Photography to advanced shooting modes and pro tecnics... BAICS ABOUT SETTINGS When shooting video with a DSLR, it is important to know about exposure settings and their effect on the footage. We will teach our students how to shoot clean footage without noise or rolling shutter. Also picture style settings become important in terms of quality. Too much contrast or sharpness can ruin footage. SHOOTING ITSELF We also want to teach our students about different shooting techniques. Our primary focus will be on documentary shooting. A shooting technique is divided into two aspects of what you shoot and how you are shooting it. Every environment requires different camera settings. Shooting people in dialogue, landscapes or sport action are fundamentally different and require a completely different setup. Precisely in our teachings we will take care to go over camera angles and camera movement as well as stabilization of filming with a tripod or using glide tracks and other equipment. Lenses with built in optical image stabilization are important for good results without professional camera-stabilizer systems.
PLANNING THE SHOT It is very important to plan in order to have good filming results. Planning starts with an idea that will become reality. To come so far several decisions have to be made and carefully calculated. The exposure, the depth of field, the camera position, angle of view (with that goes the choice of lense) and the look. For the look it is important to decide in advance whether you want to post-process the footage or not. If you made the decision for post processing to create a cinema-type look, picture style settings have to be changed and adjusted. Contrast, sharpness and saturation can always be digitally added, for the optimal footage to work with it, it is wise to shoot a flat image. All these decisions have to be made with careful awareness, with our teaching we intend to sensitize our students for the important stage of planning. DSLR WITH FILM RIG
Creating, digital post processing, editing, designing, office work, The Internet. DIGITAL POST PROCESSING Digital post processing is part of the photographers or filmmakers day to day work. The lessons on this topic will be extensive and cover everything a photographer needs to know in order to start his business. Photo editing lessons from the basics: Exposure, white balance, contrast, saturation and sharpness To advanced editing: Split toning, creative effects, colour adjustments, histogram, tone curve Photoshop lessons: layer editing, extracting subjects out of photos, composing photos, HDR imaging, content aware functions, blending modes Video editing: Colour grading and post production of videos Precise video cutting lessons on professional software
TYPO GRAPHY THE BEST WAY OF TYPING DESIGNING Design is very important for our students as ongoing photographers and filmmakers to be able to advertise and promote themselves in their new business. But we also want to give students the opportunity to work and open up a business as a designer. That is why design is going to be the biggest and most extensive part of our computer teachings. Creating: Creating and painting custom shapes and designs with Adobe Photoshop, painting with light, creating custom backgrounds Logo design and vector shapes with Adobe Illustrator and Indesign Illustrating: Designing business cards, posters, flyers and big advertisements with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop Web Design Creating websites, adding web content, flash galleries etc., with Adobe Muse and Adobe Dreamviewer
OFFICE WORK Having reliable Microsoft Office Skills is essential in our modern working society. That is why ATEDEC have decided to include MS Office lessons in the teaching programme, although the focus is on photography, design and energy. Accordingly the lessons will not be extensive and will cover the programmes: Word, Excel and Powerpoint THE INTERNET Just like MS Office the internet is a secondary topic but in terms of working with media and marketing it can also be very important. We want our students to be able to work fluently with the internet, to have a general understanding of how things work and about the effect the internet is having on our modern world, physically and mentally. The topics in this course will be: What is the Internet? Search machines Browsing websites Sending s Antivirus & Safe Browsing Social media
...is getting more and more important in our modern world. As part of Africa s development clean energy is being sought. As an NGO working in developmet, ATEDEC have decided to include energy as a subject in its teachings. The main focus will be on renewable energy especially solar energy. We also want to give our students a general knowledge of energy and the importance of clean energy worldwide, especially in terms of global warming. Concerning solar energy, we will especially go over Solar Home Systems because they are cheap, easy to install, effective and very common these days, especially in Africa. Solar Home Systems are easy to understand, students can explore themselves by changing components, experiencing with diffenent light sources, connecting own devices like handys or cameras for charging etc. We also want to introduce solar Cookers and Solar dryers to our students since these items are even less expensive and very practical to use.
ON THE SIDE OF ATEDEC Trainers are ready to offer courses. Training module under preparation. 2 nd Training Center started Construction Training room/computer laboratory available ON THE SIDE OF BENEFICIARIES Registration is in process. Receiving information from the Project director of ATEDEC. Searching for educational facilities: books additional assets to make them be more professional WHAT HAS TO COME ATEDEC has a lack of equipment concerning cameras/camera equipment, computers, blackboards and projectors. Currently ATEDEC can manage to pay 2 trainers only while the project needs at least 7 trainers as we will be training 250 people in computer skills and Multimedia. Salaries for five more trainers in six months is a great need to successfully implement this project.
A list of things we have and we think is essential to make good teaching possible WHAT WE HAVE A Teaching room with capacity for about 80 students A small computer room currently with 5 working computers A beamer with 2m x 1,5m white board A Canon 600D DSLR including following objectives: Canon EFs 18-55mm f3,5-5,6 IS II Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 Canon EF mm f4 L incl. tripod mount ring A normal tripod A normal monopod Photo, video and design Software WHAT WE NEED DSLR Cameras for our Students To train on and ensure practical teaching. (Concerning the cameras we are happy with any support you can offer us as long as the equipment can be manually controlled. We would appreciate it if they also had a video function. We would prefer Canon equipment to enable us to reach our objectives.) Film and photo equipment of any kind: Objects of different focal length; flashes; microphones; studio lights; white studio backgrounds; camera stabilizers - like tripods, glidetracks/cams, shoulder rigs etc.. memory cards; batteries; photo-filters; lens hoods... Computer and IT Support Computers or laptops for students to learn on; computer hardware of any kind... Energy Support Solar home system equipment of any kind, solar cookers, dryers, or just any kind of parts like wood, mirrors, black paper or foil... anything we could use to build these items.
DSLR Cameras Dslr cameras have a wide range of prices. For our courses, entry level DSLR s schould be enough. The prices I estimate on about per DSLR s, 10 more DSLR s require a budget of rwf. Most of them come with a kit lens (for canon equipment the 18-55mm). To maintain a good variety of lenses, some DSLR s have to be bought without kit lens, therefore a lens has to be bought seperately. A entry level lens may cost rwf. Film and photo equipment can also have various prices. To have a good setup of equipment, I estimate a Budget of rwf Computer and IT Support The computers wee need do not have to be the newest edition running the newest version of windows or ios. But they schould be capable to run grafic programms like photoshop or Illustrator on the minimum system requirements. A computer with this capacity may cost about rwf. Beamers are expensive, a appropriate Beamer may cost about rwf. Blackboards are a lot cheeper, I estimate about rwf. Conclusion: The project may require a startup capital of rwf. Fully expanded it may go up to rwf.
