2 Microsoft Publisher LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: This is a relatively short unit. It is mostly used to introduce communication to the students and to introduce them to Microsoft publisher. After experiencing Publisher, the students will, hopefully, have an appreciation for Adobe software. Using Publisher also allows the students to experience and use a more available desktop publishing software. 3 UNIT PLAN Adobe Illustrator DESIRED RESULTS Standard(s)/Essential Learnings: ITC1.a Unit Enduring Understandings: Students will understand the difference of raster and vector images, and what the advantages are of each. Students will understand the importance of the design process and how it aids in the development of quality graphics. Unit Essential Questions: How does the freeform graphics software allow for more creativity vs linear graphics software? What is the graphic design process? Why is the GDP important to follow? What is typography and how does it aid in successful Graphic Design? Students will know: tools of illustrator vector and raster images the advantages of vector images the graphic design process applications of illustrator digital measurements Students will be able to: Understand and utilize layers, in adobe software create vector images create meaningful business logos create an illustration Performance Tasks: Students will show they are capable of using typography to enhance a design. They will start to demonstrate their ability of layout and design to enhance graphic designs. 4 Adobe Illustrator LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: Students will be introduced Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator will then be used to aid in the learning of layout and design, and students will design a series of logos. Students will be taught about the design process, why it is important to follow, and how it can aid in creating a successful design. The difference of vector and raster images will be emphasized throughout the unit. 5 UNIT PLAN Adobe Photoshop DESIRED RESULTS Standard(s)/Essential Learnings: ITC1.a ITC1.i Unit Enduring Understandings: Students will understand the value of photo editing. They will understand file types, and how they are used. Students will be able to assess how a picture can be repaired. Unit Essential Questions: Why are layers important in photo editing? How can Photoshop be used in Graphic Design? Students will know: Tools of Photoshop Importance of Typography Advantages of raster images Applications of Photoshop Students will be able to: create raster images utilize layers in photoshop create a photographic illustration Performance Tasks: Students will demonstrate their ability to use the design process by designing a Vaudeville style poster. This poster will also allow the students to demonstrate their understanding of many features of photoshop. 6 Adobe Photoshop LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: We will start this unit with the basics of Photoshop. Discussing how layers can be used to aid in creating and manipulating graphics. Tools will also be discussed over the duration of the unit. Students will be given a variety of assignments, to help them practice and learn what a lot of the tools in Photoshop can do. Students will know how to use the design process to make a t-shirt. Unit Essential Questions: Why are vector images more appropriate when transferring images to screens, plates, etc. Why is it important to follow instructions. Students will know: screen printing terminology tools used in screen printing types of ink types of screens/mesh Students will be able to: Make a design for screen printing Transfer a design to a screen Print a design onto a t-shirt Performance Tasks: Students will Make a t- shirt to demonstrate their ability to screen print from a vector image. 8 Screen Printing LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: Students will learn what screen printing is, and how it is used, and how to do it. Students will Print a shirt. Students will learn the finer details about screen printing. Some examples of this being: mesh count, how emulsion works, differences in ink types. 9 UNIT PLAN Offset Printing DESIRED RESULTS Standard(s)/Essential Learnings: ITC1.a ITC1.g ITC1.k ITC1.k.11.h Unit Enduring Understandings: Students will understand the basics of the printing industry, and why the printing industry is important to the economy. They will also understand what an offset printer is capable of. Students will understand the key concept in offset printing, Oil and Water do not mix. Unit Essential Questions: how can an offset printer help in marketing? How is offset printing a unique type of printing? What makes offset printing cost effective? Students will know: offset printing terminology tools used in offset printing types of ink used in offset printing setting adjustments on an offset press industrial use and application of offset printing systems of an offset printer application of offset and other forms of printing Students will be able to: design a plate for offset printing make/process a plate for offset printing setup and use the offset press to print a single color note pad apply padding compound to note pad Performance Tasks: Students will design and make an offset printed note pad to demonstrate their knowledge of offset printing, and layout and design. 10 Offset Printing LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: Students will first learn what offset printing is, for what it is used, and How it works. Students will Then be taught how to use an offset printer. They will design and print a notepad with the offset printer. Students will also learn about how an offset printer works, how the ink gets to the paper, and all of the systems and subsystems of the press. 11 UNIT PLAN Black and White Photography DESIRED RESULTS Standard(s)/Essential Learnings: ITC1.a ITC1.i Unit Enduring Understandings: Students will understand the basic and some of the more advance settings on a camera. They will also understand various artistic techniques used by photographers. Lastly they will understand how light can be manipulated and captured. Unit Essential Questions: How does understanding Black and white photography help to understanding digital photography? How is photography used in communication? Students will know: parts of a 35 mm fully manual camera differences and uses of lighting styles photographic styles and techniques chemical processes of film and paper development how to manipulate light with a camera s aperture and shutter speed Students will be able to: Use a fully manual 35mm camera Set up varying lighting styles Take different styles of photographs using composition, and camera settings Improve photographs with dark room manipulation Develop film and prints Performance Tasks: Students will use a camera to fill a roll of film, develop the film and make 2 prints from the film. This will ;demonstrate their understanding of all the steps in Black and White photography. The next roll of film, the students will use the camera s f/stop and shutter speed setting to capture creative images. 12 Black and White Photography LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: We will first be discussing the basics of how photography works, manipulating and capturing light. The students will then be given cameras to help them learn the parts of a camera and to learn how a fully manual camera works. They will be assigned to take and develop pictures from a roll of film. They will also be assigned to creatively control a camera. 13 UNIT PLAN Color Photography DESIRED RESULTS Standard(s)/Essential Learnings: ITC1.a ITC1.i Unit Enduring Understandings: Students will understand how photography is used in graphic arts and communication. The students will understand how a digital camera is similar and different when compared to a film camera. Unit Essential Questions: What are the similarities and differences of film and digital light sensor? How does color affect people? How does color add interest to pictures? Students will know: color pigments vs colored light film vs digital photography DSLR camera operations The correct usage of Photoshop in photography. Students will be able to: Take different styles of photographs using composition, and camera settings Improve photographs with digital manipulation Use colors to set moods or themes within photographs Performance Tasks: Students will be demonstrating their skills with a digital camera and using color to compose a photo. Students will demonstrate their skills touching up pictures of faces. Lastly, students will demonstrate how studio lights can be used to create dramatic portrait photographs. 14 Color Photography LEARNING PLAN Learning Activities: Students will be introduced to digital imaging devices and how they work. They will be given an assignment to find various colors around the school. This will help them become familiar with the cameras while becoming more aware of what colors add to photos. Students will be taught how to set up studio lights.
