1 The newsletter of Eastwood Photographic Society, Glasgow, Scotland Year Number 1 - September 2016 Picture Special our lady club members Although just six lady club members competed in club competitions last year they produced some excellent images. One or two were selected for external competitions and others did well internally. All the very best to our ladies this year. Here is a selection of their work from last year. Port Stephens, West Falklands by Janet Jamieson and Zachariah by Mary Robertson Get me out of here by Sandra McCreery and Bollywood by Myra Frankland I m Hungry by Sheena Rainey and Rush Hour by Gill Williamson

Individually, members have also been recognised nationally and internationally for their excellent work. Your committee has compiled a varied and interesting programme for the coming year which not only consists of internal and external competitions but also various workshop programmes and eight guest speakers covering a huge range of photographic subjects. 3 Ken Lindsay gains his EFIAP by The Editor Many congratulations to our top photographer Ken Lindsay on gaining his Excellence FIAP Distinction. It is a great achievement which Ken has been working on for the past few years. This is the second stage of the International Federation of Photographic Art distinctions and involves submitting a large number of both digital images and prints to Salons all over the world which have FIAP patronage. Ken has been producing top images in the club over a great number of years many of which have done well and received awards in all the external competitions which the club enters both in Scotland and in the UK. Also, his contribution to the club s recent success in these competitions has been immense. The aim is to have at least 250 acceptances with a total of at least 50 different photographs. This success must have come from at least 30 different Salons spread over at least 20 different countries. Twelve of the photos must have been accepted in a print salon and at least two different photos must have received an award at these salons. As reported in our August issue Ken had seven acceptances in the 2016 Scottish International Salon including Hope and Dawn Laig Bay, both above. Below are a few of Ken s older top images which newer club members may not have seen before. Above - Wistful, Footsteps in the sand and Bad Hair Day Above Tranquility, Buffalo in Conflict and Canopy of Beech Above Girl in the doorway, Together and Despair
4 My Photographic Journey by Mary Robertson I have always been keen on travelling and my interest in photography really grew out of that. My travel souvenirs are always my photographs and I reached the stage where I wanted to be able to take a bit more than just holiday snaps. I had a very old Pentax Superzoom which I used for years but I lost interest for a bit until digital came along and that renewed my enthusiasm. I joined EPS when I retired about 4 years ago having seen a poster in the local library. I was hoping to learn a lot more and become a better photographer. I've certainly managed the former and I think the latter too though I started from quite a low base, especially as far as the technical aspects of photography are concerned. I still mainly use my camera for travel photography but I've also gone on quite a few photography courses and holidays which have been really useful and good fun. I like taking people images and I'm also keen on monochrome photography. I think I probably have to blame or thank David Hendry for that as I always admired his mono images when I first joined the club and decided to give mono a try. School Boat (top). This was one of the first images I put into a competition. Technically it is not great but everywhere I go I try to take some photos which 'sum up' a place and for me this image epitomises Cambodia. It was taken on Tonli Saap Lake where all travel is by boat, even the kids going to school. The lovely little girl in the centre is the star of the show. Beduoin (right). This gentleman was our guide in Wadi Rum in Jordan. I converted to black and white using Silver EfexPro which picked out a lot of the detail and emphasised his swarthy skin. Lindisfarne Boat (right). Photos of Lindisfarne are quite often seen in competitions but I made the old boat the focus of the image. In the colour image the light was too bright but the monochrome treatment brought out the textures of the peeling paintwork and I introduced a bit more light and shade in Lightroom. Sahara Dunes (left). This is one of my more successful images and again it epitomises a place - the Saharan dunes at Erg Chebbi in Southern Morocco. I like it because it's such a simple image but it has lots of impact. The image was taken just as the sun was starting to go down which gives it deep colours and shadows. East Renfrewshire Council Library Services have always been very helpful in promoting our club. For several years space was given in Giffnock, Clarkston, Barrhead and Newton Mearns libraries to display our work in print form. The development of digital technology has now meant we are able to rely on our website and facebook pages more. However, the club still uses posters to advertise the beginning of a new session and these have been placed in three local libraries, in The Avenue Shopping Centre, Newton Mearns, and Morrisons, Giffnock. Whilst the posters have kept the same format different images are included in each. Watch out for the dates of Open Doors during this month in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire. Glasgow seems to be running for a full week from the 12 th until the 18 th. They are opening over 100 of the city s most intriguing building as well as organising walks, city tours and other activities. Renfrewshire dates are 3 rd and 4 th September and East Renfrewshire the following week-end. Check the respective websites for full information.

ORDINARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS Cliff Lockyer, Keith Beard, Mel Leiper, Peter De Marco and Ross Eaglesham. Gabriel O Shaughnessy MFIAP, FRPS, visits us in October On Thursday 27 th October we welcome Gabriel O Shaughnessy to Scotland all the way from Dundalk in Ireland. He is visiting Scotland for a few days, giving talks to a few clubs and taking the opportunity to photograph our beautiful country. The presentation will consist of 20x16 mounted prints covering a wide variety of subject material including old Irish interiors, travel, still life and some sea/landscapes. He will also be showing his successful Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society print panel. To quote Gabriel, A photo can fill spaces that words cannot Reach. For Gabriel photography is a means of self expression, an art form that allows us to portray reality and fantasy side by side. He has been taking photos for over twenty years during which time making many friends both at home and abroad. Gabriel says in each photograph the challenge is the same to strive to portray a mood or feeling that goes beyond the image itself and connects with the viewer. Gabriel is a member of Dundalk Photographic Society one of Ireland s premier clubs and he has spoken and judged not only at camera clubs but also at major international salons. For this talk we will be joined by members of Queen s Park Camera Club and other local clubs. It should be a very interesting and enjoyable evening. Note Gabriel is a member of the Permajet lecture team so if you wish to purchase paper bring your money. There will also be a raffle that evening. Committee News At the August committee meeting it was confirmed that Cliff and Keith would be the initial contacts for new members. We hope new members will speak to them about what they would like to get out of their club membership and what support they might need. It was also decided to take the definition of a seascape from the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year (seascape section). Full details elsewhere in this issue.
6 Our other Autumn speakers On 22 nd September we welcome Sandy Cleland FRPS, AFIAP, from Penicuik near Edinburgh. Sandy is a member of Edinburgh Photographic Society. He is interested in all aspects of photography but particularly nature. His presentation will include colour, mono and nature images. * * * * * * * * * * Then the following week our speaker is Gerald Chamberlin. Gerald lives in Cumbria and his talk is called No Limits Take Two. It is a mixture of prints as panels and Photoshop Digital Workflow on how he has created some of the images. * * * * * * * * * * Finally, on 17 th November, Richard Speirs is our guest. Richard s talk is intended to encourage photographers to make simple adjustments both at the taking stage and with subsequent image manipulation to improve lighting and composition in their work. Seascapes Our Digital Round Two Competition to be judged by former club member Len Claydon ARPS, AFIAP on 9 th March will be the set subject Seascapes. The following guidelines are for your information and help when deciding what photos to take and enter. Wide vistas such as sweeping beaches, sea lochs, views of rugged cliffs are acceptable. People as part of the seascape as long as they are not close-up or posed are acceptable. Animals as part of the seascape as long as they are in their natural surroundings and undisturbed are acceptable. No close-ups or posed images. Seaside towns and ports, buildings as part of the seascape such as castles, ruins and bridges are acceptable. Objects as part of the seascape such as boats (except naval vessels), standing stones and historical relics are acceptable as long as they are not privately owned, government buildings or installations. Not allowed: Close-up or abstract of rock formations, pebbles on the beach or sand formations. If you are in doubt about anything please speak to Colin McLatchie on a club night. Picture of the month Old Blue Eyes by Nick Wober Nick says I have always admired my friend s Rag Doll cat and got the opportunity to photograph it in it s familiar surroundings at home. I used natural light and put the cat on a bed facing the window. I then converted the image to black and white but retained it s blue eyes, hence the title. It was taken with a Canon 5D handheld. The settings were 1/200 th of a second at f5.6 and ISO1250. Club Printing Service Once again Peter De Marco will be offering to print up your images on the club s A3 printer. They can be sent to Peter via Dropbox or one at a time via . See Peter at the club for contact details. All images are processed using the club s Epson R3000 printer using genuine pigment inks along with Permajet paper. For several reasons, including monitor calibration, it is impossible to match what you see on your own monitor exactly however Peter will get your print as near as possible by making one or two small enhancements. Please look over your images very carefully for dust spots and other errors before forwarding them to Peter. He is not allowed to make any changes as the work must be that of the author. The costs are very reasonable at 2.50 for A4 and 4.50 for A3. Please give Peter plenty of time before the competition entry date. You will, of course, also need to add time to mount them. Well, that s us at the beginning of yet another new club session. Will it be as good as last year? Only time will tell. However, remember the club is not all about competitions although entering our internal club competitions is a good way to improve your photography as we have a full and very varied syllabus which we hope you will enjoy. Our next newsletter will have a special feature on our strength in depth, meanwhile enjoy your photography. Jim McCreery (Editor). And Finally found among the archives. WANTED ODD JOB MAN to wash dishes and two WAITRESSES. The applicant looks familiar. Is it our very own Jim McCann by any chance?
