3 Dear Readers We are delighted to welcome our new Managing Director, Mr Yasuyuki Ohtsuka and at the same time, bid farewell to our ex Managing Director, Mr Toru Iwaoka who has done an outstanding job during his tenure in Nikon Singapore. The photographer we are featuring in this issue is Willy Foo. I believe many members in Clubsnap would have known him. Prior to his full time job in a research and consultancy firm, he also does freelance photography for Computer Times. I love his works on children. He managed to capture their most natural moment and the pictures delivered a heartwarming feeling. Our last issue s photography contest theme was very interesting indeed! Among the entries, bugs and flowers were the most common subjects for macro shot. Having to study each and every entry we received, I got to see so many creepy crawly bugs which I have never taken such close look on them before. Attracted us the most is the entry Crawling Mosquito sent in by Mr Eko Wibowo, taken with Nikon D70. What made this shot stood out was the subject he chose, something different from the norm and the distinctive style. The theme for this issue s photography contest is on Portrait Shot, Max Sim has written an article covering this subject to endow you with more tip and information. For more details on the contest, turn to Page 33 and you could be the proud winner of a Coolpix 4200 worth $699 On top of that, our Q&A contest on Page 42 is giving away a Creative MP3 Player MX 100 worth S$199, don t miss it! The new lens begins with Nikon technology that was incorporated into the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8g IF-ED II. With Silent Wave Motor Autofocus Performance, Internal Focusing, Nikon ED Glass for extra-low dispersion, and G design for use with Nikon SLR models that feature Command Dial and Sub- Command Dial control, the lens has been extremely popular among professional photographers. The lens features optimum performance among Nikon s selection of compatible SLR models, including the newest selection of 35mm SLR models and the new Nikon F6 and all of Nikon s D-Series Digital SLR cameras D1, D1H, D1X, D2H, D100 and D70 as well as the newly announced D2X. The first addition to this already fast and powerful lens is the benefit of VR (Vibration Reduction), an innovation that makes it possible to take sharper handheld shots especially when limited to shooting at slower shutter speeds than normally thought possible. This provides the advantage of being able to shootmore effectively at indoor locations and outdoor under dimmer lighting. With a 300mm lens, most photographers would limit their choice of slow shutter speed to 1/300 second. With the VR Advantage, one could expect to shoot with the slowest speed that is up to about 3 speeds slower as low as about 1/30 second! Nikon s VR technology further enhances picture taking potential with a choice of two modes to match more shooting conditions. VR Normal Mode primarily compensates for camera shake, and includes automatic panning detection as well as automatic tripod detection. VR Active Mode effectively compensates for vibration in situations where it is more pronounced and more frequent, such as when shooting from a moving vehicle. Complimenting the adoption of VR technology is the addition of an easy access row of controls on the side of the barrel. The Focus Mode switch enables instant switching between M/A (Manual-Priority Autofocus) and M (Manual Focus) modes; the Focus Limiter switch restricts AF-servo movement to a selected shooting distance range; the AF-L switch makes it possible to lock onto a chosen focus point from the lens; AF-ON engages autofocus from the lens, (in addition to the switch on the camera body); and Focus Preset instantly recalls a preset focus distance, an important feature to aid when shooting sports and you wish to instantly return to a specific distance setting such as home plate in baseball or the team's goal in soccer. The AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8g IF-ED also benefits from the application of Nano-Crystal Coating to selected elements, which provides superior antireflective properties that virtually eliminate ghost and flare and provide clear and vivid images when shooting 08 09

7 NEW RELEASES - COOLPIX 8800 NEW RELEASES - F-S VR LENS under powerful sunlight or indoors under spotlights. Created and honed in the process of developing Nikon s advanced NSR (Nikon Step and Repeat) semiconductor manufacturing device, this marks the technology's first introduction in a photographic lens and in a consumer product. Also new is a meniscus protective glass element. Nikkor lenses have traditionally incorporated optical and mechanical designs carefully implemented to prevent internal reflection, and the meniscus element succeeds in minimizing ghosting that can occur when light reflected off a digital camera s image sensor goes back up the lens barrel and reflects off an ordinary flat protective glass element. The features already incorporated in the lens' predecessor are carried over as well. This includes Nikon's exclusive SWM (Silent Wave Motor) that combines fast and precise autofocusing with superquiet operation, ED glass elements that compensate for magnification and virtually eliminate chromatic aberration, Internal Focusing (IF) for smoother focusing and a better balanced handling, as well as a rubber ring on the lens mount that delivers resistance to dust and drops of water penetration at the lens mount point. Compatibility with Nikon's TC-14EII (1.4x), new TC- 17EII (1.7x), and TC-20EII (2.0x) teleconverters extends the flexibility and total reach of the lens to as long as 600mm when mounted on a 35mm film SLR, and the same angle of view as a 900mm when mounted on a Nikon D-SLR cameras. 13 PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY WORLD OF PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY By Max Sim Most of the consumers purchase a digital camera for taking their day-to-day life and most of the shots have a human subject in it. We cannot deny the fact that we use our camera mainly for taking special events with friends and relative. All cameras can be used for portrait taking such as Nikon entry level Coolpix 2200 up to professional Digital SLR. The main differences are the Professional or Prosumer level cameras will allow you to have more control on various settings of the camera. WHAT IS A PORTRAIT? Portrait Photography will emphasize not only on posture but on the person s personalities, characteristic as well as the story that the subject wish to convert to the audience such as glory of a runner at the finishing line. Therefore anyone can be a portrait photographer but just how good are you to it. A key thing to remember in portrait taking is that you don't usually want anything else in the photo that is more interesting or eye-catching than the people. However depend on the feeling that you want the viewers to have, sometime a portrait can be make more interesting by including background or foreground objects or images that compliment or add to the character of the person. Two main types of portrait: 1. Facial Portrait Emphasize heavily on facial expression. 2. Upper Torso or full body Taking the background into consideration to enhance the impact of the portrait. STEP 1: SETUP The first step before you embark onto portrait shooting, you will have to take note of various factors such as the basic setup of equipments, accessories and other external factors that are required to produce that great shot Backdrop You can put up an outdoor stage if you prefer outdoor shooting. However if you are doing the shoot indoor, you may wish to setup a backdrop with a huge piece of cloth or paper. If none is available, you may wish to find a plain wall as your backdrop. If your focus is on a close up portrait of the subject face, it is better to find a plain or uninteresting background. There isn t any right or wrong in portrait photography. If you wish to produce underexpose (Lo-Key) or overexpose (Hi-Key) shot to bring out certain mood, by all means go for it. PHOTO: WILLY FOO Example of a Lo-Key shot that creates dramatic, mystic and artistic feel. This form of portrait is often used in Nude Portrait. Giving the audience space for imagination. Example of a Hi-Key shot helps to smoothen complexion as well as create a joyous feel. PHOTO: WILLY FOO PHOTO: WILLY FOO The above shows an example of using outdoor (greenery) as the backdrop. Notice how well the subject stands out from the blur green background. The above shows an example of using a black backdrop. The backdrop can be a large piece of paper or cloth. When using color backdrop it is important to note the color used. If the backdrop is dark, the subject should dress something that is more contrast like red against black backdrop. PHOTO: WILLY FOO 22 23

14 PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY STEP 2: Interact with your subject It is rather difficult to be able to understand a person s mood and personalities with one glance of the eyes. You may have to spend some time interacting with the person and that is the fastest way to get the correct information. From your conversation, you may know what are his hobbies, occupation and current moods. STEP 3: Make your subject at ease After getting to know your subject, you will have to put him at ease. Normally kids are more willing to pose than an adult. Kids are rather creative and may be a good subject to start. However most of the time, our subject is an adult and due to self-consciousness they are the most difficult manipulate and obliged to your command to smile or pose. Therefore it is important to make your adult subject at ease. PHOTO: WILLY FOO The portrait of the old man smoking creates a mood. It is done with the light coming in from the side window. PHOTO: WILLY FOO You may wish to show him some of the portrait photos that you have taken and suggest or allow him to suggest posture for your shoot. The key is interaction. You can also play some soft music to put the subject at ease that is why when you see a fashion shoot on television, the music is always blasting with the hippest hits in town to get the model going. Once you get the subject at ease or in the mood, it is time to get down to work. Lighting You may not need to invest in expensive studio light for lighting up your subject. Your day-to-day object can be use to create nice ambient for your shoot. For example, you may wish to use a candlelight or light coming in from the Windows as your light source. Often using flash will throws a black shadow behind your subjects and can make them look two-dimensional and pale looking. A low shutter speed will cause image to be blur if you move the camera or when the subject moves. Props You may need to provide certain props such as Mirror, Comb and hairspray is the subject need to tidy up. A simple chair or table will be useful to the subject for different pose such as lying on the table. Long healthy hair is one of her greatest asset, therefore flaunt it and you will be surprise the impact it has on the final output. For example, if the person is an artist, you may want to photograph him with his color palettes with dash of colors on his or her shirt or if her greatest asset is her hair, ask her to flaunt it while you capture her. The person need not stare into the camera but he or she can continue painting while the photographer capture him or her at various angles. If you wish to capture the nature ambient of the room and your subject, avoid using the flash as it may flatten your image and you may not be able to get the ambient that you want. Tripod A sturdy tripod might be useful when taking portrait without flash as the indoor lighting may not be sufficient and cause the camera to reduce its shutter speed to a relatively low setting such as 1/15 of a second. The portrait above shows the use of the candlelight to create the required lighting effect. It gives a very warm feeling isn t it? PHOTO: WILLY FOO If the shooting goes well, praise the subject and boost his or her confident and he or she may come up with some more interesting pose for you. Keep in mind that it is the person who is emphasized in a portrait, not his or her surroundings. Viewers of the portrait should see more than just a recognizable photograph of someone. The picture must contain mood, show personality and character, allowing the viewer to draw conclusions about the person in the portrait. Kids are playful and creative by nature, they are also the most obliging subject to take. We often see kids making funny faces or funny pose in front of still and motion camera. That s their natural side

15 PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY STEP 4 : Basic Posing Although Portrait taking has a strong emphasize on Facial Expression as well as upper torso positioning, it is important that if the subject is standing, his standing pose will affect the overall posture. When a person sitting up or standing up with his or her head looking straight into the camera will create a relatively dull and serious mood. This can be use for formal portrait shooting for Identification card, Passport or Driving License Photos. Everyone wants to look perfect in a portrait, however most of the time we are not be perfect. The photographer will have to find ways to convert or cover up the negative factor and bring out the best in us. We will provide you a list of issues to look up for as well as tips on how to overcome these when photo shooting your subject. These are recommended pose and setup, which serve as a reference only. ISSUES Ears : Large Ears Spectacle Wearers RESOLUTION Show only one ear Or Shadow the other ear Shoot with empty frame Or Position the spectacle away from the light Or Bounce up the light or position the light high so that there will minimum reflection from the glass piece. ISSUES RESOLUTION Body : Plump The most common request to the photographer is Please make me look slim. Here we are going to teach you the basic of posing to make your subject look slim. Face: Round or Fat Face: Thin Face: Wrinkled or Deep Facial Lines Face: Scar, Acne or Pimpled affected Neck: Multiple Chins Eyes : Different Size Eyes : Blinking Eyes : Sleepy Raise the camera angle slightly or shoot at an angle. Place the subject facing the camera Use Softer Frontal Flash (Hi-Key Photography) this will help in creating a smoother complexion. Use lighting to shadow the problem areas. Or recompose your shot so that the affected area is hidden. Ask the subject to stretch his or her neck and lean towards the camera. It is important to tell the subject to keep his or her chin up and stretch out a bit to make the multiple chins less obvious. Shoot from a higher angle by placing more emphasize on the head. Position the subject in a way that the larger eye is close to the camera and the other in shadow. This technique is to trick the audience into thinking that things that are nearer to our viewing angle will naturally be bigger Or Ask to subject not to look into the camera and recompose your shot accordingly If your subject is a blinker, time your shot and capture after the eyes blink. You may need to take multiple shot and choose the best Most of the photographers will advice the subject to have an early rest the night before. It is also important that the subject does not drink too much before going to sleep, as this will cause the eyes to look puffy. If the subject has natural small or weary eyes, the photographer will have to find an angle, which will not emphasize too much on his or her eyes. The photographer can take at a side angle or have the subject looking elsewhere when the shoot is on. The photographer may also need to alert the subject that he is going to shoot and keep his or her eyes wider. Hand Posing Tips The usual way for photo taking : The subject is standing straight with both hand on the side and looking straight. If the subject is positioned at 45 degrees, the subject will look slim. If your subject put his or her foot out, it will make the subject taller. Just before the camera snap, tell your subject to breath in to tuck in the tummy to look slimmer. Besides playing with body posture, you may wish to try posing the subject with different hand positioning. There are some tips to follow to create better posture. Try not to show the flat surface of the subject s hand. Try to bend the fingers slightly at the joint The hand posture for Male should be more closed, female should be more open. Use opposing diagonals: ie head resting on arm; each pointing in opposite directions. For female, the hand facing the camera can be place on the shoulder while the other hand on her waist as shown in the image on the left. Follow the above tips only serve as a quick guideline. It all ends up on how you want to present your subject to the viewing audience. PHOTO: WILLY FOO Never be afraid of the making mistake, as you will learn from it

16 SINGAPORE FASHION WEEK FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - WILLY FOO PORTFOLIO : WILLY FOO I distinctly remember the first time I had my hands on my dad s camera when I was just about 4 years old. Seeing images shift in and out of focus as I turned the lens fascinated me beyond my realm of understanding. Hearing the shutter trip was an exceptional feeling that lingered in my memory for the next 15 years. Being unable to financially support film costs & development, I decided to wait for digital technology. When the first digital camera delivered reasonable colour reproduction at 640*480, I bought my first set. Since then, it has been a non-stop pursuit of digital imaging, pushing the limits of digital technology and photographic knowledge. Having no formal training, learning the ropes was a process of trial & error. Fortunately digital technology shortened the learning curve without incurring hefty development costs. My first serious hobbyist camera was the Nikon Coolpix 950 which featured full manual control at 2 megapixels which no other cameras within the price range came close in After doing intensive research, I flew to Tokyo to lay my hands on the first set, 4 months ahead of availability in Singapore. Since then I ve also used it s successors like the Coolpix 990 & the The swivel design together with the BSS (Best Shot Selector) mode provided remarkable flexibility which even the professional DSLRs are not able to provide. The BSS feature also contributed to the strong macro capabilities of the Coolpixes, allowing uncomplicated setups to produce stunning macros & close-ups. likes sports and portraits. The speed of the F2.8 lens allowed quick focusing and beautiful photos even in less than optimal lighting conditions. The 200mm end of the lens produced flattering portraits & a beautiful background blur (bokeh). Nikon became the natural choice when the F&B publication company and events company I worked for required a complete system to cater to their range of photography needs which included outdoor/studio food photography, portraits & live event photography. The Nikon D1X professional body coupled with the PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8d was an excellent performer in food photography. During a high profile F&B event, we demonstrated live photography even before the Nikon WT-1 wireless transmitter was available. A Nikon D100 was cabled via USB to a wireless notebook in a backpack transmitting photos to another notebook which is hooked up to a projector. I wrote scripts in windows and actions in Adobe Photoshop to handle the workflow which automatically resized, watermarked and sent a copy to the projector and a live website at the same time. It was instant gratification and talking point as guests witnessed photos immediately gets projected on the big screen. The arrival of the D2H pushed the envelope of digital technology, the response of the camera surpassed human psychomotor ability and the incredible buffer meant I never had to miss an opportunity due to camera limitations. The versatility of the D2H together with the ittl flash system as well as the WT-1 wireless transmitter opened up new avenues of commercial opportunities. The quality of the 4.0 megapixel sensor allowed me to print 3m wide advertising banners to a happy clientele. PHOTO: WILLY FOO Singapore Fashion Week D2H with AF Zoom-Nikkor mm f/2.8 ED The Nikon D100 marked my foray into the world of serious photography. Being a nature photography enthusiast, I decided to bite the bullet and acquired a AF-S Nikkor mm f/2.8 lens. This formidable combination opened up new areas of photography As a happy Nikon user, I continue my pursuit of continual learning & sharing, with each mistake comes a new learning opportunity. I will however, miss BSS. Willy Foo can be reached at: or willy@sp.com.sg 28 29
