Darcy Armstrong Digital Libraries Spark 3 The Sargent John P. Davidson Collection Mission This collection contains digital objects chronicling the time Sargent John P. Davidson spent in the United States Air Force. It is the mission of this collection to preserve and provide information about the life and varied work of members of the United States Air Force by telling one man s story. Audience The Primary audience of this collection is researchers seeking more information about people who served overseas in the United States Air Force in the 1960s. This includes Air Force veterans seeking to reconnect with the people and places they encountered during their service as well as students and scholars. Goals To document, preserve, maintain, and make accessible photographs, documents, and other artifacts containing information about the experiences of Sargent John P. Davidson To add to the collective memory of United States veterans by providing an understanding of why one individual enlisted and what he thinks of his experiences To provide researchers with assistance in using the collection Selection Policy The Sargent John P. Davidson collection contains digitized images, documents, and files directly related to the subject s time in the United States Air Force, An item will be considered for inclusion in the Sargent John P. Davidson collection if it meets the following criteria. It adheres to the collection mission and goals It is an image or document pertaining to John P. Davidson from the time he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966 to the time he was discharged in 1969, OR It is an image of the Plattsburgh Air Force base in Plattsburgh, NY; Taipei Air Station in Taipei, Taiwan; or Mactan Air Base in the Republic of the Philippines, , OR It is an interview, written or audio, with a person identified in a photograph or document contained within the collection It includes enough existing metadata to determine time and place It is sturdy enough to physically survive the scanning process
Copyright The John P. Davidson Collection currently maintains ownership of all objects and metadata in this collection unless the item is in the public domain. Unless otherwise noted, all objects within this collection are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution- NonCommercial- NoDerivities 4.0 International License. nc- nd/4.0/ Digital Preservation Guidelines IMAGE Master Access File Format TIFF JPEG Bit Depth 8 bit grayscale 24 bit color 8 bit grayscale 24 bit color Spatial Resolution ppi 200 ppi TEXT Master Access File Format TIFF JPEG Bit Depth 1 bit bitonal 8 bit grayscale 24 bit color 1 bit bitonal 8 bit grayscale 24 bit color Spatial Resolution ppi 200 ppi AUDIO Master Access File Format WAV MP3 Bit Depth 24 bit Bit Rate 256 Kpbs 128 Kpbs VIDEO Master Access File Format Quicktime (.mov) MP4 Bit Depth 10 bit 8 bit Bit Rate 225 Mbps 2300 Kbps Audio Sampling Rate 48 khz 48 khz Audio Bit Depth 16 bit 160 Kbps These standards were adapted from the Indiana Memory s Collection Development Policy and Proposed Digital Imaging Standards and Best Practices document. Ensure that the edges of scanned items are included in a scan. Do not attempt to crop or correct yellowing, curling, scratches, or other damage that occurs with age.
Original materials must be stored in a climate- controlled, light- free environment. Acid- free, archival- quality boxes and photo sleeves are highly recommended. Store digital files including master copies on an external hard drive, cloud storage, and CD- ROM, and a desktop computer. Each file should be labeled with the accession number. 4 Rights Copyright or licensing Unless the item is in the public domain, it is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution- NonCommercial- NoDerivities 4.0 International License Access This collection is intended to be user- friendly. Users will access this collection using the url This takes users to the Landing Page seen below, from where they may browse or search the collection. Users may select an image from the carousel, using the slider to choose between images. Users may also browse Recent Additions along the right side of the screen. Users can subscribe to an RSS feed to receive updates to the collection. Clicking on a thumbnail image or its title reveals the full record including metadata and a larger image that allows for closer study.
Clicking on the text in blue in the subject field links to related items. For example, clicking on Veterans Indiana yielded the following results. There is both a keyword and advanced search feature for users who are looking for specific items.
A keyword search for Taiwan yielded the following results. Users can add different fields to build an advanced search for narrower results. Users may also limit a search by date.
A search for Taiwan + Todd yielded the following result. Services It is the intention that this collection be as user- friendly as possible. In order to further aid users, a list of recommended subject headings is provided for more efficient searching. This is provided on the Landing Page.
To provide context for places and events discussed during John P. Davidson s oral history interview, a brief biography of Davidson, a place name glossary, and timeline of events from is provided on the Landing Page. Field test Subject 1: A thirty- year- old woman with extensive technology experience. This subject accessed the collection with an iphone. She mostly browsed using the carousel, but she did conduct two keyword searches using the list of suggested terms: Taipei, Taiwan and Quichocho, G.. Comments: I really like it! I wish I could easily view all without scrolling through. I saw the back of a photo for neatest room and accidentally cancelled out. When I came back, I couldn't find it. I saw it when I opened it again, and others I didn't see the first time. Subject 2: A seventy- year- old man with minimal technology experience. This subject accessed the collection using a desktop computer. He did not use the search features, but rather clicked through the carousel and backed out of each image. He clicked on hyperlinked text one time. Clicking on Vietnam yielded results from other collections. Though this subject didn t know Harold King, the subject of a different digital collection, he was interested in reading about another person s experience. Comments: I don t really know what to do here, but the information is interesting. Subject 3: A Forty- year- old man with moderate technology experience. This subject was capable of utilizing the advanced search, though he chose not to do so. It would be nice if you could see the exchange rate for the currency you have in the collection. He also wished there were an all item view or similar way to see the entire collection.
Future The primary goal of this collection is to document and preserve items relating to John P. Davidson s time in the United States Air Force. Ideally, documents or photos from people specifically mentioned by John P. Davidson would be sought to add insight to this collection. If possible, connections to G.T. Quichocho and Harold Todd or their descendants regarding their time in the United States Air Force would be sought. If applicable, the collection s title may change to reflect an increase in coverage. In the future, more user support materials would be welcomed, including how- to guides and video tutorials.
