Oral and written evidence was invited from data suppliers, service and software providers, and primary and secondary data users. Further meetings may be held before publication of a report in the second quarter of Photogrammetric Record, 17(99), 2002
2 PROFESSIONAL PUBLISHING SUPPORT: PARTNERSHIP WITH BLACKWELL PUBLISHERS AWORKING PARTY of the Publications Committee of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society has been working hard during 2001, to examine the potential of professional support for the publication of the Photogrammetric Record. These efforts have now come to fruition, and we are pleased to report that Council has approved the recommendation of the Working Party, that from April 2003 onwards the Record should be published jointly by the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society and Blackwell Publishers Ltd. The equal partnership arrangement will allow the Photogrammetric Record to develop radically over the coming years, with the most obvious and immediate benefit being an increase in frequency to four times per year. In addition, a fully accessible electronic version linked to all major online electronic databases will be produced. An additional benefit, albeit less obvious to most members, will be a massive and necessary reduction in the workload currently borne by inadequately compensated Society volunteers. Production editing, distribution, advertising and marketing will largely become the responsibility of Blackwell Publishers, with guidance from the Society. Clearly it will cost more to produce the Record in the future, but it is intended that the increased costs will be predominantly borne by institutional subscribers, for whom the charge will be increased at the same time as the frequency increases to four issues per year. It is nevertheless most important that the number of institutional subscribers is maintained, so readers who are in a position to influence their organisations are asked to give their support to the Society and thus to the science of photogrammetry in this regard. Further details are still being worked out, but it is the intention of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society and of Blackwell Publishers to continue to develop the Photogrammetric Record as the world s leading international photogrammetric journal. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society was held on 13th September 2001, during the Annual Conference of the Society. In future the AGM will be reported in the Annual Review of the Society rather than in the Photogrammetric Record as was the practice of the Photogrammetric Society. Following the AGM, a presentation ceremony took place in Church House, Westminster. The final awards of the President s Prize and President s Medal under the rules of the Photogrammetric Society were made to Professor S. N. Lane and Mrs Veronica Brown respectively. THE PRESIDENT S PRIZE THE AWARD of the President s Prize for 2001 was made to Professor Stuart Lane for his paper entitled The measurement of river channel morphology using digital photogrammetry (Photogrammetric Record, 16(96): (October 2000)). This was the sixteenth and last award of this prize under the Photogrammetric Society s revised regulations. Details of its successor under the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society are given elsewhere in these Notes. Photogrammetric Record, 17(99),
3 THE PRESIDENT S MEDAL THE PRESIDENT S MEDAL of the Photogrammetric Society for 2001 was awarded to Mrs Veronica Brown by the retiring Co-Chairman, Mr E. H. F. Wickens. The following is an edited version of the citation for this award. Veronica Bull joined the Society in 1959 while studying for a diploma in photogrammetry at University College London ( UCL). After gaining her diploma she carried out research at UCL including projects in Iceland and Essex, and lectured at UCL for a year before accepting a post in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Surrey, where she lectured for 25 years. For 12 of these years she was also lecturing at the South Bank Polytechnic in London. From 1962 to 1964 and again from 1977 to the present Veronica Brown has worked as Assistant Editor of the Photogrammetric Record, and has been responsible for editing papers, proof reading, preparation of the feature Photogrammetry Round the World and giving general assistance to three editors (Professor E. H. Thompson, Keith Atkinson and Paul Newby). She has performed this work with rigour, dependability and conscientiousness and has always met the deadlines even when she was working under great personal stress. Veronica was acting Honorary Treasurer of the Photogrammetric Society for the year and was a member of Council from 1989 to She has also organised a number of social functions including a memorable Conversazione on board HMS Belfast. Veronica, while never wishing to be in the front line of Society affairs, has been and remains one of those dedicated people who work hard behind the scenes and without whom a Society depending on voluntary effort could not function. Her dedication and high standards have done much to maintain the Photogrammetric Record as the respected international journal that it is today. THE E. H. THOMPSON AWARD THE PRESIDENT S PRIZE of the Photogrammetric Society has been renamed. The first E. H. Thompson Award will be made in 2003 and eligible papers to be considered will appear in the October 2001, April and October 2002 and April 2003 issues of the Photogrammetric Record (Nos. 98, 99, 100 and 101). The rules for the awards of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society are under review but the following are unlikely to change significantly. E. H. Thompson Award Rules (1) The E. H. Thompson Award will be made once every two years by the Chairman of the Society to the author(s) of the paper in the Photogrammetric Record which most merits the award. (2) The award will be made primarily for the originality of the content and the value of the paper to photogrammetry. It will be made from all those eligible papers published in the two-year period up to and including April of the year in which the award is to be made. (3) All contributors to the Photogrammetric Record will be eligible with the exception of the following: (a) those who have previously won the award, or its predecessor, the Photogrammetric Society s President s Prize; 550 Photogrammetric Record, 17(99), 2002
4 (b) those who have been awarded the Photogrammetric Society s President s Medal; (c) members of Council for the time being; (d) the Editor and Assistant Editor(s) of the Photogrammetric Record; (e) specially invited contributors from overseas. (4) The value of the award will be 200. The award and an appropriate certificate will be presented to the award winner at the Annual General Meeting. (5) The Chairman will make the award on the recommendation of Council. It will be at the discretion of the Chairman to divide the award between the authors should there be two or more papers of equal merit. (6) Should the award be made to two or more co-authors of a paper it will be left to the authors to divide the award, provided that all of them are eligible. If one or more co-authors are not eligible it will be for the Chairman to decide what proportion of the award should be made to the eligible co-author(s). QUICKBIRD2 SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED DIGITALGLOBE S remote sensing satellite, QuickBird2, was successfully launched on 18th October Following the losses of its predecessors, EarlyBird and QuickBird1, the new satellite is apparently now to be known simply as QuickBird. With a ground pixel size of 0 61 m (panchromatic) and 2 44 m (multispectral ), imagery from QuickBird is the highest resolution commercial satellite data currently available. VISIONS OF SCIENCE AWARDS THE VISIONS OF SCIENCE AWARDS are made to the winners of an annual scientific photographic competition sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals in association with the Daily Telegraph and the Science Photo Library. The competition (open to UK and Eire residents only) provides a valuable opportunity to share the fascinating and often beautiful world of scientific imagery with a wider audience. The four picture categories in 2001 were entitled science close-up, science through the lens, science concepts and science as art. There was also an award for the best image from a young science photographer. Although the awards in 2001 indicated a strong emphasis by the judges on striking microscopic images, there seems to be no reason why photogrammetric or remote sensing images at any scale should not be entered or have a chance of success. Details can be found via XXTH CONGRESS OF THE ISPRS THE TWENTIETH CONGRESS of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing ( ISPRS) will take place in Istanbul, Turkey from 12th to 23rd July Photogrammetric Record, 17(99),
