3 THE RANGEFINDER Page 3 of 9 ENGLEWOOD CAMERA CLUB INFORMATION PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Greetings for August: This month I would like to highlight a well know local attraction, the Denver Botanic Gardens. The main location is at 909 York Street, Denver Colorado Just take 6 th Avenue east to Josephine, turn left, and in about a mile north you will find the gardens on your left. The garden has a newly completed parking garage between Josephine and York. The garden web site is The gardens have fantastic displays of all types of botanical specimens spread over many acres of attractively landscaped grounds. And the outside grounds are complemented with a beautiful indoor display of tropical plants. In addition, monumental sculptures by British artist Henry Moore are on display. Even though I have been a member for years I didn t realize that the summer hours are from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. On October 1, 2010 the hours change to 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Our recent Denver high temperatures can dampen the spirits of even a dedicated outdoor photographer. However, the Denver Botanic Gardens, in addition to their normal hours of operation, on Friday August 6, 2010, members are admitted before the general opening hours of 9:00 am, at 7:00 am. Members are always admitted for free during normal hours, but the special early opening hour on August 6 of 7:00 am, for members and guests only, should be a great opportunity to beat both the heat and the normal crowds. I have not been to a member early opening yet but I will be there August 6. If you are interested, I can get five people in as my guests, with my membership. It will be informal, each person does there own thing. If you are interested just let me know in advance ( ) or johnchapter@msn.com). The cool morning hours would be a great time to practice your flower and macro photography! George Vago, will make the next ECC meeting presentation entitled The Anatomy of a Good Photograph. George was the judge several years ago for the Through the Eye of the Camera show at the Littleton Museum. The topic for our August 10, 2010 meeting is Twilight/Night and George will be the judge. Regards, John Chapter MONTHLY MEETING The Meeting Our next meeting will be Tuesday August 10 th in the Greenwood Village Community Room at 6060 S Quebec St, Greenwood Village Colorado. The Program The presentation this month is by George Vago. George will give a presentation on The Anatomy of a Good PhotographOur Competition category this month is Twilight/Night. They will be judged by George Vago. Hospitality Billie Campbell will provide Drinks and Ellie Colitti will provide Snacks for the meeting this month. GUESTS AND NEW MEMBERS Mike Vogt just joined ECC as a new member. Welcome Mike! Guests are always welcome to our monthly meetings. Guests may bring a photo to be evaluated, but it can not win a ribbon unless you are a member. MEMBERSHIP DUES Individual- $30, Student- $15, Family- $35

4 THE RANGEFINDER Page 4 of 9 CLUB OUTINGS AND EVENTS: Adding Events to our Website Members, we welcome you to add an event to the ECC calendar. You may add anything from photo shoots, photo showings to photo contests, as long as it has to do with photography. Login to the Members Only area, click on the ECC Event Calendar, then simply add the date and description of the event. After you ve added the event, don t forget to send out an letting everyone know it s there! Adding known Photographic events/shoots is a great way to help everyone do what they like to do the most - Take Photos! Then also alert the Rangefinder editor, to they can get it into the newsletter. Ken Farman Reporting OTHER EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES: City Park Fountain The fountain at City Park as been repaired from last years lightning strike and is scheduled to be in operation from Memorial Day until September. They have set up a photographer's time for each night, it is from 9:00 pm to 9:30 pm each night. If I remember correctly the lights are turned off at 10:00 pm. Lee Urmy Reporting Colorado Balloon Classic Located in Colorado Springs, CO on September 4, 5, 6 th in Memorial Park. The mass ascension of balloons starts at 7:00 each morning. There is no public parking at Memorial park, but you may park along Union Ave or in private lots. So plan to arrive early. More information may be found on our website under the Calendar tab and at: Lee Urmy Reporting Call for Entries ~ Smithsonian The first link is to the contest page, the second link is to the 7th contest finalists photos. One of the photographers is from Denver. The photos from all 6 previous contests are also available. Entries are due December 1, Bob Jenkins Reporting TIPS, TALES AND THOUGHTS This section is for getting valuable information to our members. If you have a nifty tip, a tantalizing tale or any deep thoughts you d like to share with other members, please me at sdehn@mac.com. Golden Hour Time Chart Ever heard of the "Golden Light"? It occurs during the hours of sunrise and sunset. I found this website that calculates the 'golden hours of light' for a particular location. You provide the location and it provides you with the hours you want to be there. Is it useful? Well only if you don't know when those hours occur. Landscape photographers live by those hours. But it does become useful when your are planning to be at a location for the 'golden light', it allows you for planning the amount of time you need to get there. Best part, its free. Lee Urmy Reporting Camera Lens Mug For the photographer that has everything. Photojojo is selling a coffee mug that looks exactly like a Canon mm lens. It s priced at $24. I thought this was a very cute and unique gift that was worth sharing with everyone. You can find it at: Sue Dehn Reporting Non-Video Tutorials Photoshopstar is a website I just found but has a nice variety of tutorials that are easy to follow. Some are fun and some are more to the graphics side but some very interesting stuff. Take a look. Lee Urmy Reporting

5 THE RANGEFINDER Page 5 of 9 Colorado Birdwatching Safari Here is a link that lists several places in Colorado to view birds. It tells you what kind of birds and where they will be. It also lists what other kind of wildlife may be found in the area, such as Elk, Minks and Porcupines. 6 Sue Dehn Reporting Jpeg images and Compression The following link is not just about Lightroom, it is really about.jpg compression and what the compression does to an image. This is the first interactive sequence of image that allow you to see the differences in compression from (Lightroom) or 1-12 (Photoshop). You can actually see the banding occur and the pixels change. Really worth a look. Lee Urmy Reporting Get Money for your Old Cameras This is a website where you can sell your old camera equipment, as well as other electronics that you have laying around. I typed in my Nikon D70s and while I didn t put it up to sell, they quoted $182 for it. Sue Dehn Reporting Link Your website to the ECC website As a member of ECC, you may have a link to your own photography website as a link off of ours.
