Written by Paul Muehlemann Mike Brouphy did a program on High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, and more specifically, two HDR applications that he especially likes to use to create his HDR images. Each costs about $99 unless you find a discount coupon somewhere. The first one he mentioned was Photo Acute. It makes HDR images, but also can do several other things: It can combine several raw images in order to create higher resolution images. It can create enhanced focus images. If you are having trouble getting a clear shot of a scene because of people and vehicles moving in front of the scene, you can take multiple shots and the program will remove the people or vehicles when it combines the images. The application also reduces noise, chromatic aberrations and geometry distortions. On a scale of 1 10, Mike rates the program as a 3 for ease of use and a 10 on output quality. Photo Acute will generate the HDR image but does not have tone mapping capability. The tone mapping is best done in Photoshop, Photomatix or other software of your choice. Another application that Mike likes to use is HDR Express by Unified Color. Mike finds this program, more intuitive and easier to use. For example, you can drag and drop your multiple RAW image files into the program and once it combines them into a HDR image, it shows you multiple thumbnail images illustrating different looks or presets that you can give to the image. Mike likes to avoid what he calls the grundge look. Mike illustrated his program with screen shots from the two HDR programs. He also passed around some books on HDR photography. The book that he likes best is HDRI Handbook by Christian Bloch. Mike has also used Photomatix and the HDR capabilities built into Photoshop, but he prefers the above two programs. He says that he uses HDR a lot, especially with the images he takes with his infrared modified Canon G10. He often takes as may take 3, 5 or 7 different RAW exposures of a single scene, which he later combines into an HDR image. He said that you need to take more shots of side lit and back lit scenes than you do when the light is coming from behind the camera. June Field Trip Written by Mike Brouphy On a bright, sunny, hot and humid June 11 eight hardy members of the club met down at Laurel Valley Center in Thibodaux for a feast on a variety of photo delights. Up near there are several open air covered barns used to store a variety of early farm implements. There are numerous crank starting tractors, plows, harvesters, and other manual farm implements. Laurie and I got there about 10:30am and met a group of members who were busy photographing one thing or another from an old Dodge truck, an old Dodge Charger, and several large pieces of farm equipment that had definitely seen better years. From there we moved about a half mile down this dusty road back to the many, very weathered cabins and barns that housed the slaves and the farm animals all in less than first class accommodations. The buildings are surrounded by barbed wire to keep the curious and souvenir seeking from gaining access. We eventually worked our way back to a well shaded area where Mike Parker had a chance to get a group photo of our warm group enjoying the shade. By that time it was getting to be lunchtime and everyone left in search of some food, cold drinks, and a/c. Laurie and I stayed to get some more photos and talk to the shopkeeper about having a group come back with perhaps the opportunity to get inside the barbed wire. More on this at a later time. All in all while the day was hot and humid everyone enjoyed the photo ops that were present. My thanks to all that decided to make the trip. 1

2 Photo by Bill Pinto The Judging Photo by Bill Pinto July Competition Meeting Co-chairpersons Connie Allotto and Sarah Brock had difficulty obraining an outside judge for the July print competition. So Connie gave the members present at the July 7 meeting a short introductory lecture on the principles of photographic judging. Next she distributed ballots for each attendee to vote on the images entered. Each member was asked to choose the best image in each of the four categories: Assigned, Open color, Open B&W and Nature. The assignment was Fleur de Lis. Then Connie and Sarah tallied up the ballots to select the first, second, third and fourth choices in each of the four categories with some discussion on the winning images. It turned out to be a fun exercise, enhanced by the refreshments served during the meeting. The Tallying Photo by Rose Parker 2

Regular meetings of the society are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00 PM at Munholland United Methodist Church, 1201 Metairie Road, Metairie, LA. Visitors and guests are always welcome. Club Officers Editor's Message My apologies for not getting The Shutterbug published sooner. As most of you know I am traveling and therefore cannot attend the meetings and other activities of the club. Therefore, I am dependent on some of you members to get information and photographs to me for this publication. Particular thanks go to Rose Parker, Paul Muehlemann, Connie Allotto, Mike Brouphy and Bill Pinto for helping me get this information together, During the months of June through September the newsletter will be published every other month and in October it will return to monthly. Traveling about this wonderful country as I do is a great privilege. It affords me the opportunity to see virtually every state and the multitude of photo-ops that present themselves everywhere. I carry not only my laptop computer but also my imac desktop so that I can process the photographs as I go. The only problem is that of time and fatigue. It is hard to believe how quickly time passes and how easy it is to procrastinate on doing the necessary "work". But the main object is to enjoy and I am certainly doing that. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you on my return in October. I also hope that all of you will have the chance to do the kind of traveling and photographing that I do in the future. As I have said many times, what a fabulous country this is. There is something interesting going on in every nook and cranny. Perhaps if our national leaders had the opportunity to see the country the way I do they would take more seriously their responsibility and pledge to preserve and sustain and protect the land in which we live.
