It's a great time for photographers to capture family memories. But if you lived in Europe "Holidays" also means vacations. Traveling holidays are an opportune time to challenge your photography skills. You can scout out photogenic locations from the internet including the best times of the year and time of the day to be there. You can plan your day around the golden hours or meal times; your choice. My travel schedules tend to be a mixture of both but rarely a sunrise since I'm not a morning person. 1 P age

2 Of course if you are on a tour you don't have many options to independently plan the day but that shouldn't prevent you from using you skills and taking some potentially great photographs. Even on a tour, when the opportunity is there, get off the beaten track away from the major tourist sights. My experience has been that doing that by walking just a block or two presents an entirely different atmosphere and new photographic opportunities. Regardless the type of "holiday" try to bear in mind the Club's merit judging themes. I take a list with me of the themes for both of my clubs and look for opportunities to capture those subjects. If I find something that is often repeated, I will look for more of them and it becomes an ad hoc theme. On a trip a few years ago to England I photographed many down spouts to the extent that my 3 traveling companions were on the constant look out for more for me to photograph. Another thing to bear in mind is to work the subject. Shoot horizontally and vertically; get the big picture and the details; move around to change the angle; look behind you and, if possible, return at another time. And always be conscious of the light, which is what photography is all about. So happy "holidays" and happy holidays to all. Please review the sheet and notate mark if you are planning on attending and if you would like to contribute and bring in a food item. (No need to bring an item that is large enough to feed 100 people, because if everyone chips in we will have plenty of food.) The sign up sheet is to give ideas and make sure that we don't end up with a dozen people all bringing in pie. Feel free to add in any favorite item you enjoy and would prefer to bring instead. Focus Stacking 101: Tack Sharp Images with Enhanced Depth of Field By: Rick Opiekun If you ve ever wondering how some professional photographers capture great tack sharp macro images with an extended depth of field, you probably thought they were using a very specialized lens. Well, while good glass with macro capability is key, it may not be enough to capture a full front-to-back sharp image. This is where focus stacking comes into play. While focus stacking sounds complicated, it s really not difficult to understand. Basically, a photographer fills the frame of their camera with a subject (e.g., a caterpillar on a branch), and while not moving the camera, only moves the focus point selector to take photographs of the subject using several different focus points. After taking 5, 10, even 20 shots or more, the images are brought into photo editing software, such as Photoshop, where the sharpest area of each image is used to create a composite that is sharp throughout. The resulting image is tack sharp with an enhanced depth of field. Here s how it s done using our previously mentioned caterpillar on a branch example. 1. Place your camera on a tripod (this is not going to work well hand-held). 2. Attach a cable release to your camera or set up your wireless shutter release to be able to activate the shutter without touching the camera. Remember, in macro photography, the slightest movement of the camera is magnified. 3. Focus on the caterpillar and fill the frame as much as possible. 4. Select the correct exposure for the conditions under which you are shooting. If you normally shoot in aperture priority mode, check to see how your camera is metering, switch to manual mode, and set your shutter speed accordingly. Use the lowest ISO practical for your shot. If your camera supports Live View on the rear display of the camera, it is easier to compose the shot and also adjust focus points. 5. Lock your camera into place and don t move it for the duration of the shoot. 6. Move your focus selector switch to place the focus point on the branch area closest to you. Adjust your focus and take the shot. 7. Move the focus point selector to place the next focus point on the caterpillar s face. Refocus and take the shot. 8. Move the focus point selector to place the next focus point on one of the caterpillar s antennas. Refocus and take the shot. 9. Move the focus point selector to place the next focus point on the other antenna. Refocus and take the shot. 10. Move the focus point selector to place the next focus point about a quarter down the length of the body of the caterpillar. Refocus and take the shot. 11. Repeat step 10 to take a shot focusing on the mid-point of the caterpillar, the 3 rd quarter of the caterpillar, and finally the very end tip of the caterpillar. 12. Once you ve taken all of these shots, you should have a total of 8 shots. 8 P age

9 13. Transfer all 8 images from your memory card into a folder on your computer. You can work with either JPEGs or Raw files (whatever you re comfortable processing). 14. Launch Photoshop. 15. Once Photoshop is up and running, go to File>Scripts>Load Files into Stack. 16. Select Browse and navigate to the folder that contains the 8 images of the caterpillar. 17. Click on the first filename in the list and, while holding down the Control key (Command on a Mac), click on the remaining 7 images to select them. You will see the filenames appear in the dialog box in the middle of your screen. 18. Underneath the dialog box is a checkbox next to Attempt to Automatically Align Source Images. Make sure to click in that box. Then select Ok. 19. In Photoshop you will now see all of your images appear as separate layers in the layer stack on the right side of your display. Click on the top-most later to select it and, while holding down the Control key (Command on a Mac), select the remaining layers. 20. Go to Edit>Auto Align Layers and make sure Auto is selected in the Projection box. Then select Ok. 21. Once the image alignment is complete, make sure that all of the layers in the layer stack are still selected. 22. Go to Edit>Auto-Blend Layers and select Stack Images. Make sure the boxes for Seamless Tones and Colors and Content Aware Fill Transparent Areas have checks in them. Then select Ok. 23. Once the stacking procedure is complete, you will see a new layer appear as the topmost layer in your layer stack. This is the merged layer comprised of the sharpest section from each 8 photographs of your caterpillar on a branch. You will see this new layer is tack sharp from front to back. 24. You can now discard the other layers and perform your normal image processing on the newly created layer. Note: These post-processing instructions assume you are using the latest version of Photoshop CC. Focus stacking is possible in other versions of Photoshop and possibly Photoshop Elements, but the exact steps may vary slightly. Flash Photography Workshop- Arik Gorban Club News On Saturday morning, May 4, Arik Gorban will be teaching a class on flash photography. This will be a hands-on work shop, which will supplement his March 7 lecture at the club, also on flash photography. The class will be held jointly with the Four Seasons Manalapan Photography Club at their clubhouse. Alan previously sent you a questionnaire regarding the topics to be covered at the class. If you think you will be interested in the class, please fill out the questionnaire. The exact topics to be covered during the class, the cost, starting time and length are being developed. Print Workshop- How to make a Photo Book 9 P age

10 On Thursday, December 13 th, at 7pm, at the Tennis Pavilion in Regency at Monroe, we will hold a workshop on how to make a photo book. So many of our members keep their pictures on their computer and rarely look at them. This is, unfortunately, true when we go on vacation or have a special event. The photo book is a great way to archive your pictures and can be in easy reach to review. This session should give you a head start on making a photo book on-line with Shutterfly. We will spend time navigating through their processing screens. Hopefully, you will come away with enough knowledge to construct a photo book. For directions use this address; 530 Buckelew Avenue, Monroe Township and ask the guard at the main gate for directions to the Tennis Pavilion. Otherwise you can find a map and directions at Photoshop Workshop Joe Ferraro wants to make the Photoshop group helpful for all. While he s used Photoshop for a long time he doesn t consider himself an expert. Photoshop is massive and there are probably only a handful of people in the world that would call themselves experts. But that shouldn t stop us from learning from one another. He s willing to lead workshops on many subjects and will try find an expert for topics he may not be familiar with. Before having the first meeting he wants to learn more about those interested in the group. He wants to see what everyone s skill level is and what most people are interested in learning. Also, what areas of Photoshop are you proficient in. To do this, please take a few minutes to complete the attached form by clicking on the link below vc=0&c=0&w=1 The 16th Annual EyeSights 2019 Open Juried Photography Show is coming up soon.
