Among other things, in this issue we present you the Temadur SC-F series, which is a new fast version of the old Temadur SC. The information is on pages 4 and 5. A new version of the Temaspeed tinting software has been released, please read more information and updating instructions on page 13. See also Tikkurila s gorgeous design floors at the new Temaspeed shop in Tallinn, Estonia, on pages 10 and 11. In the last page you can find a comparison table with new CLP markings and old warning markings. You can cut this page off and put the table on the wall as a reminder. Tikkurila to launch new high-tech single-coat polyurethane paints Tikkurila s new series of Temadur SC-F paints have shorter drying times than the previous Temadur SC series.

4 Tikkurila to launch new high-tech single-coat polyurethane paints Tikkurila s new series of Temadur SC-F paints have shorter drying times than the previous Temadur SC series. Customers are extremely satisfied with these products because they can be used as single-coat paints because they have high sagging value and they contain anticorrosive pigments. Tikkurila Oyj has developed a new series of fastdrying single-coat polyurethane paints with three gloss levels from semi-matt to glossy: Temadur SC-F series Temadur SC-F series Temadur SC-F series. The main goal of Tikkurila s Research & Development department has been to shorten the drying time of the Temadur SC series. As a result, the new series of paints dry in a shorter time than the old one (+23 C, RH <80%). Drying times are compared in the table below. 5 The Temadur SC-F series of paints are recommended for steel surfaces blast cleaned to preparation grade Sa2½, or for surfaces primed with Temadur 20, Temacoat GPL-S Primer, Temabond, Temacoat Primer or Temanyl PVB. All the three products in the new Temadur SC-F series contain anticorrosive pigments and are therefore excellent products for use as single-coat paints e.g. for agricultural machinery and earth moving equipment, frameworks and other steel structures where a high standard of aesthetic appearance is required. The recommended dry film thickness of 120µm with one coat will provide excellent weather and abrasion resistance Temadur SC-F 20 and 50 are available in TVL and TCL base paints and Temadur SC-F 80 in TAL and TCL base paints. The standard can size is 10 litres. One clear advantage is that the temperature of the oven can be decreased when force dried, and the drying time is much shorter than before. Faster lead times will generate cost savings. 5

6 Akvilac FD-J 10 and Akvilac FD-J 25 new transparent lacquers for joinery industry Water-borne lacquers are becoming more popular due to environmental issues. Low amount of volatile organic compounds is the main driving force when solvent borne products are changed to waterborne alternatives. Quality of water-borne lacquers has also been improved making them thus more attractive to customers. New Akvilac FD-J 10 and Akvilac FD-J 25 lacquers are especially designed for joinery industry. The lacquers are very fast drying and they have excellent wetting properties. Outlook of lacqured surface looks the same than surface lacqured with solvent-borne lacquer. Surface is very hard and its scratch resistance is superior. Excellent appearance and resistance properties makes the lacquers suitable for different kinds of interior wood applications. classification R2 according to IOS-MAT-0066 IKEA Specification. Lacquer film resists normal house hold chemicals very well and even staining liquids like coffee have acceptable result. Akvilac FD-J lacquers are suitable for fast automatic spraying lines as well as for hand spraying. Optimal spreading amount is 2x70 90g/m². In addition to IR-oven they dry also in room temperature. With spreading amount 2x70 g/m² the lacquered surface can be sanded and stacked after 3 minutes when dried in IR-oven in temperature of C. Required drying time depends on the spreading amount and temperature. 8 Intelligent and colourful waste management with Europress Waste management, recycling and recovery are key issues in modern society. Efficient waste management requires effective and environmentally sustainable waste collection, sorting and storage. Environmentally sustainable, effective surface treatment Europress and Tikkurila have collaborated for more than 20 years, always selecting the best available surface treatment alternatives for each application and taking into account environmental considerations without compromising durability. Painting processes have been designed to be as environmentally sound as possible by minimising the amount of non-recyclable waste, which also helps save costs. During the last few years, Europress has chosen semi-gloss Temasolid SC 60 paints for the surface treatment of its waste compactors, says Mika Viita-aho, Tikkurila s Key Account Manager. Twopack, single-coat Temasolid paints are based on a new, environmentally sustainable polyurea technology. As they have a high solid content, they result in fewer VOC emissions than conventional paints. We save a lot of effort because the paint is delivered thinned and ready to be sprayed. This also helps us achieve more homogeneous results, Timo Huhtala comments. Single-coat paints for quick and easy painting Temasolid SC products contain anticorrosive pigments and can be applied to steel surfaces as single-coat paints or top coats in paint systems. They are recommended particularly for the painting of earth-moving and agricultural machines and other heavy-duty vehicles. With a careful planning of the drying process, it is possible to obtain significant energy and cost savings. The paint is applied with a two-component spray on a steelball-blasted surface to a thickness of about 120 micrometres. In this way, the durability of the paint is far superior to paint that has been applied to a regularly cleaned metal surface, Painting Shop Supervisor Pasi Koljonen explains. We also use a paint distillation method that allows dry paint waste to be disposed of as mixed waste. The amount of generated waste is almost non-existent, because there is virtually no wastage with two-pack paints. The products to be painted are large and their surfaces are even, which means relatively low overspray. As chambers are equipped with a combined oven and humidification system, drying times can be kept short throughout the year without compromising quality, Koljonen says. Surfaces painted with Temasolid have excellent resistance against weather and abrasion, which is extremely important in case of equipment that is always kept in the open. 10 Tikkurila design floors for Hansacolor paint shop Hansacolor, a shop selling Tikkurila decorative paints and industrial coatings, opened in the summer of 2013 in the Mustamäe area of Tallinn. Marketing begins as soon as you walk in the door: the large patterns and bold colouring of the floor designs are impossible to overlook. The patterns bring to mind AS Tikkurila s training centre in Tallinn, and no wonder, as they are by the same designer, architect Diana Vällo. Apart from the colourful floors, Diana also designed the entire training centre, which opened in 2007 in premises in the old AS Tikkurila-Vivacolor nitro-cellulose lacquer factory. Vällo was also responsible for some of the design of the company s office spaces and advertisements. In autumn 2011, Tikkurila launched design floor techniques that help make more individual and colourful floors without compromising wear resistance. The practically unlimited range of colours offered by Tikkurila s floor products for creating a variety of patterns and effects means that concrete doesn t need to be dull and grey. Three days and six pairs of hands The total floor area to be treated was 350 m2, and the colours used were from the RAL collection: orange (RAL 2001), brown RAL (350-6), light grey (RAL 7044) and dark grey (RAL 850-6). Surface treatment of the floors took three days, the first spent diamond sanding the old epoxy floor. The floor was given morning and evening primer coats on the second day, using a mixture of Temafloor 400 epoxy varnish and 1029 thinner. The varnish was then sprinkled with dust-free sand to afford the coating better adhesion. On the third day the floor received its Temafloor P 300 self-levelling epoxy coating. The patterning took up half a day. Altogether six people were involved in laying the colourful and undoubtedly distinctive design, one of whom was the designer herself, architect Diana Vällo. 10

12 Avatint to be the main tinting system for waterborne Industrial Wood products The Industrial Wood business is an important part of the Tikkurila Group s operations. Especially now that painting jobs that were earlier done with decorative products by consumers themselves are more and more done by industrial companies with industrial products. This is the case, for example, with wooden facade claddings and terrace boards. It is important for us to be able to guarantee our consumer customers that when they need to repaint wooden materials they have bought ready painted with Tikkurila s industrial products, they can do it with Tikkurila s decorative products without any problems. This was also the target when we decided to change our Industrial Wood products to the Avatint tinting system the same system that is used in Tikkurila s decorative paints business. Avatint is already used for tinting a variety of waterborne industrial products for wooden facades and terraces. New products that will be tinted in Avatint are Pinja Flex, Akvi RMS and Akvi Top. On one hand, use of the same tinting system will guarantee color accuracy between industrial and decorative products. On the other hand, distributors will only need one tinting system when selling both decorative products and Industrial Wood products from Tikkurila. The Temaspeed Premium system will still be needed for tinting solventborne Industrial Wood products and the Akvi Tone system - for tinting transparent products. The transfer of Pinja Flex, Akvi RMS and Akvi Top to the Avatint tinting system will be carried out in the beginning of A new software update will be available on the Temaspeed Extranet for easy download and installation. In case you don t have internet connection please download the update manually from Temaspeed extranet countries all material colour composer updates. To check which software update you are working with please take a look at the top of the Colour Composer interface. The last number of the series describes the latest update installed. (e.g. below update No 5 is installed). All updates must be done in numeric order (5 6 7). Don t skip any update! Update 7, which will be launched later this year, will have a significant amount of updated NCS S colour formulae in Temaspeed Premium. The plan is to update all NCS S colours in order to have the most accurate colours available for tinting. This job should be finished by summer In case of colours tinted over a longer period of time - for e.g. in projects - we recommend checking the modification date of the used colour formulae. They may change after a database update. In case a previous formula is needed in order to finish a certain project, we recommend contacting the local Tikkurila office, who will help you with the information you need.
