1 A collaborative public art project to benefit Bread for Life, Southington Community Services, United Way of Southington and Southington Community Cultural Arts (SoCCA) Apples & Arts mission is to: Provide funds for support services for Southington residents Connect Art and business Encourage foot traffic into local businesses Create visibility for the sponsors Celebrate the 50 th anniversary of Southington s Apple Harvest Festival ARTIST PROSPECTUS Artists are invited to create unique orks of art by painting or decorating fiberglass Apple forms. The completed apples ill be displayed throughout the ton starting in September through spring of They ill then either be purchased by their respective sponsors or auctioned at the Calvanese Foundation Gala spring The funds raised from the project ill assist the four non-profit organizations in expanding their efforts in promoting a thriving and healthy community. Businesses and community members are invited to participate by sponsoring/purchasing the art apples. Sponsorships range from $1,000 - $2750. Sponsors ill have the opportunity to choose an artist s design from a portfolio of accepted proposals folloing a jury revie. Sponsors choose designs in the order that they commit to sponsorship and ill be able to request a specific location of the finished project. Whether art is a passion, a past time or a profession, this is a great opportunity to shocase artists talents and support three important regional non-profit organizations. We anticipate a high level of involvement, and therefore encourage artists to submit proposals early. The folloing pages ill provide you ith information about the process of applying to become a participating artist in this onderful region-ide public art project. All designs ill be exhibited at this event. Apple forms are available to selected artists for creation Week of July 23rd Final creations picked up from artists for final auto-body clear coating Sept 8, 2018 Public display of Apples - September 30, 2018 through April 6, 2019 Apples &Arts Auction at the Calvanese Gala April 6, 2019 Artists may touch-up apples for final auction during the eek prior to the Auction Party. Artists ill be notified of specific dates or date changes as information becomes available. Additional promotional events may be scheduled. NOTES: Artists may submit any number of designs. Even if your design is not accepted initially, late sponsors may choose your ork! The number of designs finally chosen for creation on apples depends on the number of apples that are sponsored. A brief narrative description of your proposed design concept A list of the proposed materials you plan to use A short paragraph describing your artistic background Samples of your previous ork (optional, but strongly suggested) via only By submitting your application, you are stating that: You are the original creator of your design and you have not copied anyone else s original ork. Your design does not infringe on anyone else s intellectual property rights such as trademark, copyrights, trade dress, or design patents. To the extent anyone else has contributed to your design, you ill obtain a signed ritten release from that person arranging for all rights in contribution to your ork. By submitting your design on paper you are ensuring that you ill create a full scale artork of the highest quality that ill meet durability standards. A revie panel ill evaluate all designs. This revie panel has sole discretion to accept or reject any design.

4 Selection Process A sponsor ill select an artist/design from the portfolio of accepted designs folloing a revie by the event s Art Committee. Once the sponsor/artist match has been made via the design portfolio, that design ill be removed from the portfolio. If an artist has more than one design approved for the portfolio but has indicated that he/she is only planning to complete one apple, then the remaining designs from that artist ill be removed from the portfolio and returned to the artist. Stipend If your design for Apples & Arts is approved and is selected by a sponsor, you ill receive an artist s stipend. The stipend ill be provided at the time of sponsor match. If for any reason you cannot complete your project, the materials stipend must be returned to SoCCA. Rights Apples & Arts organizers ill on the entire right, title and interest of your design proposal, accompanying sketches and all derivative orks, including the final ork completed on the full-size fiberglass apple. You ill be acknoledged as the artist on a plaque attached to the base of the apple and in appropriate publications; hoever, the copyrights, hich include the rights to reproduce your design, create copies, or reprint, ill be oned by the Apples & Arts organizers. The artist or artists, title and sponsor of each apple may be listed in printed materials such as brochures, maps and other such promotional materials and ebsite materials for Apples & Arts. If your design is not selected for exhibition, the entire rights, title and interest in your design ill be returned to you. 5 Apples & Arts Artist Prospectus: Design Criteria Tell a tale ith an Apple Be a proud participant in Apples & Arts! We invite all artists, designers, and community groups to be part of this exciting region-ide public art project, Apples & Arts. You are encouraged to submit any number of designs, although it is unlikely that more than to by one artist ill be accepted. Design Criteria: Creativity; Whimsy; Artistry. The apple may be modified to reflect the unique character of the sponsor and vision of the artist. Artists may paint, sculpt, electrify, light or add appendages to the apple if he/she ishes, BUT the structural integrity of the apple cannot be compromised and mechanisms for attaching apple to base are not altered. Additional fees or costs as a result of alternation are the responsibility of the artist and/or sponsor. Proposed additions must be made clear to the Revie Committee and must follo guidelines provided. Apples & Arts is a public art event. The apples ill be placed in highly public, accessible locations here the public can touch the final creations. Public safety is a significant concern. Designs should be created ith durability and safety in mind. An artist ill ork ith appropriate media and finishes to ensure longevity of artork on the fiberglass form and permanent enough to resist removal by eager fingers. Installation calls for finishes that are eatherproof and kid proof; these art-orks are designed to be interactive to the public. An acrylic varnish ill need to be applied by Apples & Arts organizers to help insure permanence. We do not guarantee that an Apple ill be placed in a eather protected zone. If a design changes radically from the original proposal the changes must be resubmitted for committee revie before the project can continue. Failure to submit may result in possible rejection of completed apple for display and artist ill be responsible for the replacement cost of the fiberglass apple form and return of any stipend paid to artist. NO direct label advertising or logos company or product, unless a requested by a sponsor ho is committed to buying back their apple and approved by Apples & Arts organizers. This is a public display and therefore all proposals must be appropriate for all audiences. Designs that may appear to be disrespectful on political, religious, or other grounds are discouraged. An artist may be approached to design an Apple directly by a sponsor, but design proposals created under these circumstances must still be submitted for the Revie Committee s approval. If an artist and sponsor cannot agree on the final design, the sponsor has the option to select another artist/design. Any repairs that are required during the duration of the exhibition are the responsibility of the artist ho ill be notified if any are needed. All forms ill require touch-ups during the eeks preceding the auction. A revie panel ill evaluate all designs. This revie panel has sole discretion to accept or reject any design. Acceptance into the design portfolio does not guarantee a sponsor.

6 Resources for Artists: Artists are encouraged to vie eb sites that provide information about similar projects that have taken place in other communities. Information about these projects can be found online and also at Icon Poly s ebsite and Facebook page at: facebook.com/iconpolystudio/ Finally, technical information can be obtained from the artists hotline at Icon Poly. Icon Poly is the firm that is producing the apple forms that are the canvas for our project. They have produced fiberglass forms for numerous public art projects and have a ealth of experience in this area. The artist s hotline number at Icon Poly is Recommended materials for decorating the apples: Bondo Body Putty tube: for filling small holes and making small repairs and Bondo fiberglass body repair kit for making larger repairs (purchase at auto supply stores) -Paints: All professional-grade artist acrylic or oil paints ill do the job. For ease of application, good color stability, and national availability in art stores, e recommend Liquitex or Golden Soft Body (Medium-viscosity) Acrylics, in the color selections of your choice. Golden Polymer Medium: Gloss 250 ml or 500 ml bottle for decoupage. Use full strength, immersing paper in medium, applying it to the form, and removing all air bubbles ith your hands. Remove excess medium ith almost-dry sponge. Let it dry for several days before varnishing. Make color copies on computer or copy machine, of any pictures or images from magazines that you ish to decoupage. The inks are more permanent, and the copy paper ill hold up better than photographic or magazine paper. Lascaux UV-1 Gloss Varnish: For a protective coating on your artork before clear-coat at autobody shop. You ill need a 500 ml bottle for the largest forms such as the large hole apple. Order as soon as you get your assignment, because it can t he found in most stores and most art catalog houses run out and have to back-order it. THERE IS NO GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOR THIS PRODUCT. For use, dilute 4 parts varnish to 1 part ater and filter through gauze. Use nylon brush, and have a large jar of ater handy, to immerse your brush in if you have to pause hen varnishing. It sets up quickly, so if you pause, don t begin again until the varnish is dry (15 minutes or so.) It goes on slightly cloudy but dries crystal clear. Immediately remove air bubbles if they form by touching lightly ith brush. Magic Sculp Epoxy Putty: For altering the surface or adding sculptural elements to the term. This product comes in to tubs and you mix equal parts together to activate the product. Complete directions for usage ill be found on these ebsites, along ith ordering information:.magicsculp.com or.restorersupplies.com It ill adhere to the fiberglass form if you rough up the surface and drill a fe small holes so you can push the magic sculp into the holes for a better bond. It is non-toxic, allos a couple of hours of orking time before it sets up, and after dry (12 hours) can be sanded if necessary, and painted ith ease. Mosaic tile or mirrors: You ill be applying mosaics over primed surface, so follo the directions from your tile outlet. Treat the form as though it as a bathroom all (example: use thin-set adhesive and sanded mortar) using hatever the tile store recommends. These forms should be sealed ith mosaic sealer, not autobody clear coat. If you are going to use broken pottery, be advised that some of the colors ill not be color-fast and may fade outdoors. Only use tile that is colored throughout and not just on the surface or it ill break don in the eather. Also, be certain that the mortar completely covers any broken edges so that hen you rub your hands over the form you do not get cut. Glues, Adhesives: Of course you ill ant non-aqueous glues such as jeelers cement, liquid nails, or epoxy cements. Do not use Elmer s glue or other ater-soluble glues. Remember that people ill try to peel off anything that you glue onto a form. You can also use magic sculp epoxy putty as glue, if you rough up the form and the item to be glued, and drill into each side so the epoxy putty can form a true bond. Fabrics: If you are going to apply a fabric such as cotton to the form, as a decoupage, you can use the Golden Polymer Medium as described above. If you are going to harden fabric and apply it to the form you ill need to use an extremely toxic material. It is a to-part resin product and needs to be used outdoors, aay from children and pets, and you need to ear a respirator, rubber gloves and eye protection. We do not recommend this and ould not do it ourselves. For Artist supplies, e recommend Dick Blick or Jerry s Artarama. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!
