HANS SCHÄUFELEIN (Nürnberg /40 Nördlingen) Christ before Pilate in front of his Palace. Woodcut. B. 11; New Hollst. XLIIII, 109, 720; Singer 6213; Dodg. II, p.6, no 12: p. 17, no. 12; Geisberg Buchill Wm.: High Crown with cross. (Meder 20, dated ). Prov.: Collectors marks GJ and K.K. Proof for the famous Passion set of Ulrich Pinder (ca ). Speculum passionis domini nostri Ihesu christi. Nuremberg: [printer for the Sodalitas Celtica; F.Peypus?], 30 August This the first book to contain woodcuts signed by the artist. Very fine, rare proof impression before any text verso and the roman numbering above the image (speculi passionis domini. fo. XXXV). Ulrich Pinder was the personal physician of the elector Frederick III of Saxony ( ). Anxious to give his Speculum Passionis a very beautiful iconography, Ulrich Pinder employed two woodcut artists whose technique was very close to Albrecht Durer s. Hans Schäufelein and Hans Baldung Grien executed for the book a superb set of 39 full-page woodcuts, and one in three quarters of a page. They illustrate the major scenes of the New Testament from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion, referring to the various stations of the Passion, and also the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Pentecost, the Assumption and the Last Judgment.

HONORÉ DAUMIER (Marseille Valmondois) 71 lithographs from Le Charivari from the series: Emotions Parisienne, Actualités, Proverbes et Maxime, Vulgarités, Les Amis, Les Bons Bourgeois, Les Représentans representes, Croquis Musicaux. Daumier produced since 1832 lithographs for the satirical newspaper Le Charivari. After the banning of political cartoons in 1835, mainly satires of everyday life have been published. Daumier s caricatures achieve great validity by the characteristic detection of different personality profiles.

OTTO DIX (Gera-Untermhaus Singen)

Ships in the Port at the Bodensee. Watercolor on vellum. Bottom right signed and dated with pencil: Dix ,3: 23,6 cm. Cf.: Pfäffle, catalogue raisonné 1991, our watercolor not recorded. A nice view of the pier of the village Geienhofen / Hemmenhofen over the lake to the Säntis and the surrounding mountains. Moving to Lake Constance after his dismissal from the Dresden Art Academy led to a radical transformation of Dix s choice of subject. From now on, the landscape became the main subject; it was his personal, inner emigration under the Nazis, which meant a sudden break in his artistic career. After his dismissal, Dix made only a few watercolors, only in the fifties he started to produce more abain. The many watercolors in Hemmenhofen he made in his studio were based on his memories of the daily walks. The focus lies on the unity of the composition, the harmony of coloring, as Dix was dependent on the sales, because these watercolors were his livelihood in the years after the Second World War. The choice of color in the landscape watercolors based on the real colors and Dix used it as a means of imitating nature. JOHANN CASPER KOLLER (1808 Zürich 1887) View from the Alte Landstrasse in Thalwil towards the Alps. - View from the lakeside of Thalwil towards Zurich. Watercolor Each signed and dated. Each ca. 37:51 cm. The two counterparts are beautiful views of Thalwil. The watercolor taking the view over the lake up towards Zurich, shows the former gasworks and the houses Im Bürger, and also the Church, here still with the old helmet, inspired by the Zurich Grossmünster. The other watercolor, which takes the view down the lake to the peninsula Au and towards the Alps, shows a part of the Alte Landstrasse in Thalwil between the so called Platz and Platte. In the background the Glarus Alps with Vrenelis Gärtli, the Glaciar on Mount Glärnisch. Koller was born as a butcher s son in Zurich. He drew much after Ludwig Hess and found his living primarily with the production of lampshades and fireplace screens, as well as the coloring of landscape views for publishers. Koller also participated with different watercolors at local and national exhibitions between 1844 and His nephew, the famous animal painter Rudolf Koller, learned in his workshop the first technical steps of art. Both watercolors in very good condition with rich colors.

J. F. U. EICHELBERG Nissen BBI, These two rare works together in one volume with finely colored illustrations. Some foxing in the text, otherwise a fine copy. The work about plants describes mostly exotic, edible or medicinal plants with huge commercial importance, such as pepper, rice, coconut, ginger, figs, dates and others. As well the described animals belong to the economically relevant categories.
