2 Motifs, patterns & repetition Can be found in art (photos, Paintings, Drawing, Graphic design, Sculpture and all visual art forms. Repeating patterns are also found in music, architecture, plays and poems. Patterns and repetition may be used to create unity, balance, composition, value and movement in a work of art.

10 Regular Repetiion When a design or element is repeated over and over creating a pattern. The element does not change size, or orientation or placement in spacing. Example: a checkerboard
11 Regular Repetion Regular repetition is accomplished by repeating a visual element at regular intervals. By repeating an element multiple times, you can create a relaxed piece; the reader knows what to expect, and is comforted by this. This relaxed feeling can be used to complement a message that is intended to be calming.

18 Irregular Repetition When a design or element is repeated over and over creating a pattern. The element does not change size, BUT may change orientation or placement in spacing. rhythm can be manipulated to create a disharmony in a design, and such disharmony can be used to manipulate the emotional impact of the design, and strengthen a discordant message.

25 Escher Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in Holland. He took up art in 1919, and became famous in the 1940s and 1950s for his novel tesselations of the plane and realistic depictions of impossible scenes and infinite vistas. He lived all of his life in Europe, and died in Holland in 1972.
26 Escher One of the world s most famous graphic artists His grades in school were, for the most part, poor, and he really only excelled in music, drawing, and carpentry. His family hoped that he would study architecture, and after a previous failed attempt at doing so, in 1920 he enrolled at the Haarlem School for Architecture and Decorative Arts.
27 Escher He had a fascination with the regular division of a plane The idea of creating images that did not lie flat on the page but rather, took on a multidimensional appearance, would consume the vast majority of his artistic career. Ascending & Descending is one of his works which presents this concept of impossible construction or impossible spaces.
28 Escher Escher, who had never been strong in mathematics and had no training in it, could not understand the more abstract concepts, he taught himself the 17 plane symmetry principles. His grasp was mostly visual and intuitive. Without realizing he was doing so, he was studying areas of crystallography years before professional mathematicians would, and ironically, he came to be regarded as a master research mathematician despite his initial feelings towards the field.

30 Escher He later took these concepts to an even greater level, focusing on infinity, hyperbolic tessellations and 2- and 3- dimensional planes, after meeting Canadian mathematician H.S.M. Coxeter, who praised Escher, saying he had achieved mathematical perfection in his Circle Limit III etching.

32 Escher During his life he created over 2000 drawings and 448 woodcuts, lithographs, and engravings. He also illustrated books, and designed everything from postage stamps to murals. Like some of his famous predecessors, - Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Holbein-, M.C. Escher was left-handed.
