1 RYL GOUHE cryla Gouache is an ideal medium available to the artist, designer, illustrator and student. cryla Gouache has 102 highly pigmented colors, including 10 metallic and 4 luminous finishes, in an acryl resin which will dry to the same smooth mat finish as does the Holbein Designers Gouache in gum arabic. cryla Gouache moves, reacts, blends and feels like traditional gouache, but is effectively waterproof once fully dry. It is rated for light-fastness, adapted to the Munsell color standard for hue, value and chroma and is made from the purest pigments available. cryla Gouache may be used as a successful ground that will not contaminate over painted layers. It will not shift in color tone from liquid to dried color. Hence, what you see wet is what you get when dry. cryla Gouache does not have as fragile a surface as traditional gouache in gum arabic and is compatible with all other water soluble media regardless of origin. n ideal medium for hobbyists and bird carvers as well. Finishing to a mat surface, Holbein Gesso is the ultimate versatile medium. Mixing perfectly with each other and/or a super-white gesso in smooth, medium, coarse and super coarse texture, these paints may be over-painted when necessary with water base color, pastel and oil base colors. The grounds may be paper, cloth, canvas, wood, stone, concrete, etc. They do not work well on oil-primed canvas, other oil surfaces or plated metal without special priming. These paints have a heavier viscosity than most liquid acrylics but may be smoothed by adding up to 15% water. Mix thoroughly before use. Remember, if you are using good quality paints, don t skimp by buying an inferior gesso. This is the base of your painting and will determine the quality of the successive layers. To reinforce the paper ground, paint first with a gloss medium. Painting on oncrete If the surface is very uneven, it may be necessary to fill with modelling clay. oncrete contains alkali and should be primed with the same solution as is used for thin cloth before painting. Painting on loth Mount fabric on stretcher strips, then prime the surface as follows. For 1 meter of thick cloth, coat twice with a solution of 400ml of gloss medium and 100ml of water. For 1 meter of thin cloth, coat twice with a solution of 250ml gloss medium and 60ml water. Painting on Wood oat 2 or 3 times to remove grain pattern. Otherwise once will be satisfactory. prime coat of gloss medium first will inhibit subsequent color penetration. Painting on Metal and Plastic Thinner Gesso is suitable. The manufacturing process is entirely computerized and is mechanized from inception to final product. 13 HOLBEIN RTISTS QULITY OIL PSTELS Endorsed by the Oil Pastel ssociation of merica (OP), the Holbein artist quality oil pastel is without equal. Made by the Buncho orporation under contract for Holbein, the pastels are the culmination of over 60 years of research, development and manufacturing expertise in the oil pastel field. They are manufactured to offer a buttery consistency that blends without effort to allow the artist the control of the finest quality soft pastel. The manufacturing process is entirely automated. Each stick in the 225 color range offers uniformity of color dispersion and each handles evenly and cleanly without stickiness. Once down, they provide excellent surface stability. Because of the wax content and highly refined mineral oil, they will never harden completely. The manufacturer recommends that no attempt be made to fix the surface. It is unnecessary and will only detract from the vigor of the artist pigments. Because of the materials used, the pastels may be applied to almost any ground. 17 RTISTS DRY MEDIUMS ERTIN MIING TEHNIQUES Water Bath When heating solutions, it is best to use a double boiler to ensure that the solution is not directly on the heat source. How to use Glue glue solution is made by mixing glue and water. The quantity of glue will vary depending upon application but always use as little glue as possible, dilute and apply thinly. Description: Medium density, mix 1000g water and 100g glue. Place glue in water and permit to stand for twelve hours. Using a water bath, dissolve fully bringing solution temperature to not more than 80 O. Undissolved glue or dirt particles can be filtered out with gauze. Glue which is dissolved fully in cold water loses waterproof properties and the solution will lose adhesive qualities if dissolved at prolonged heat above 80 O. Use of Glue Solution to prepare cloth or other surface for painting Pre-coat: To fill holes or fill out surface of linen, pre-coat evenly, using wooden spatula or squeegee, while solution is around 60 O. Painting Surface: Once the pre-coat is no longer sticky to the touch, apply the second coat thinly while the solution is hot. anvas should be dried horizontally in a well ventilated and relatively cool area. void sun or any direct heat source which may cause uneven drying and resulting surface cracks. How to use Meudon and Zinc White in preparing and applying non-oily undercoating which has absorbent qualities Solution #1 Mix 100g water, 10g glue and 40g Meudon in a glass jar or can and let stand for 12 hours. Then dissolve solution in water bath by stirring at 60 O -70 O. Filter impurities. The resulting undercoat can then be applied to the glue prepared surface in two coats, the first by brush (a flat hake brush is best), then smoothed with a wooden spatula and the second thinly with a hake brush. Resulting surface is suitable for both oil and tempera. Solution #2 Semi-absorbent undercoat. Glue solution g to 1000g water. Meudon g and Zinc White g. Place in jar or can, heat using water bath. Mix vigorously at 60 O -70 O adding slowly up to 40g Sun-Thickened Linseed Oil. dd water slowly while stirring until solution is like mayonnaise. This undercoat solution can then be applied to the prepared surface in two coats. If the pre-coat is too smooth, sand lightly to roughen the surface. Both coatings of the undercoat paint should be evenly applied using a wooden spatula. Egg Tempera Mediums White of one egg to equal parts of Dammar Varnish and Sun-Thickened Linseed Oil. The ratio of varnish and oil may be altered as required. If only Dammar Varnish is used, then the medium will be low in oil and the tempera will be more like Fresco painting. Mix Dammar Varnish and Sun-Thickened Linseed Oil in a jar and shake vigorously. Separate white of the egg from yolk and remove any opaque white traces. Stir the egg white vigorously before adding to varnish and oil. Water may be added as required. Double the water for a matte finish. Dammar Varnish 2-3 parts turpentine to one part Dammar gum by weight. Weigh turpentine and place in glass jar. Place Dammar gum in a gauze and place in turpentine. reation of a solution may take up to 3 days and may be accelerated by pressing gauze-covered gum with a glass probe. asein Varnish (asein is perishable and hence antiseptic agents should be added to preserve solutions.) Solution #1 Place 30g casein in 150g water and let stand for 12 hours. Heat in water bath to 60 O and stir in 6cc ammonia. Bring up to 90 O, then remove and seal container. Solution #2 dd 125g water to 50g casein, heat to 60 O and stir in 15g calcium carbonate ammonia (after dissolving in a little water in advance). dd 125g water to thickened mixture, stir and seal. 18 HOLBEIN RTISTS PIGMENTS Bees Wax - No. PG501 (90g Jar) Used as a universal wax in paintings from ancient times, Bees Wax is a protective agent offering durability to a painting. It can be used to coat the surface of a painting and because it dissolves easily, it can be used as a semi-gloss medium and as an adhesive agent to back canvas when mixed with a small quantity of Dammar Gum. Melting point 62 o -64 o. Dammar Gum - No. PG503 (100g Jar) soft, natural white resin which dissolves easily at normal temperatures in spirits of turpentine or petroleum. It dissolves in drying oil by heating. Offering a glossy light-colored film, it can be used as a medium for oil color and as an agent in varnish, tempera and adhesives. Melting point 160 o -170 o. Softening point 75 o -100 o. Gum rabic - No. PG507 (130g Jar) In powdered form, easily dissolved in water, Gum rabic is a primary medium for water-based colors. Heat water to dissolve - 10% to water for opaque color, 30% for transparent water color. Quality of the solution will be improved by adding just a little glycerin. Rabbit Glue - No. PG509 (130g Jar) Made from French rabbit skin, Holbein glue is the finest available. Traditionally, pigment particles used in Japanese paintings tend to be rough by design. s a result, techniques of blending glues are of great importance to color brilliance and permanence on the painting surface. In powder form and easily dissolved, Holbein Rabbit Glue offers excellent adhesion and viscosity and is water-proof. It should be used in small quantities only. Its adhesive strength is dissipated with prolonged heating. Glue may be used as well for protecting and undercoating the surface or back of canvas, wood, paper, cloth, etc. Lithopone - No. PG407 (170g Jar) Used as a water color undercoating, Lithopone is compatible with water, is non-toxic, very white, has excellent hiding power and is resistant to alkali and hydrogen sulphite. Non-resistant to acid and acidic gases, 30% zinc sulfide, 70% barium sulfate. Gesso Bologna - No. PG471 (1kg) Produced in Italy, Bologna plastic from Holbein is free from calcium carbonate removed by special process. n absorptive ground for oil and most suitable for tempera and gold ground tempera, the plastic, which is gypsum (calcium sulfate dehydrate) is mixed with glue to prepare the gesso undercoat for application to a board or other appropriate surface. asein - No. PG511 (110g Jar) milk casein with excellent moisture resistant and adhesive qualities, asein in solution is perishable. pplies smoothly in comparison to glue, the resulting coated film is hard but fragile. omposition: protein 86.5%, fat 1.7%, less than 1%, water 10%, ph 4.5%. lumina White - No. PG401 (60g Jar) Used primarily with pigments in oil colors. white powder which becomes semi-transparent when mixed with oily mediums. PG405 is darker in color with coarse particles for undercoating. Meudon should be coated thinly after mixing with casein or glue.
