A painting by one of the world s most famous artists has just been sold for a little over 1m or $1.4m. So far, a strangely normal everyday routine at an auction house. An item is put on sale, bids are made and then the lowest bidder wins the item. But this sale was different because the painting that had just been sold started to shred itself into hundreds of thin strips through a shredder hidden in the bottom of the frame. 2 Why was this artwork destroyed? For the answer look no further than the artist himself the elusive, obvious graffiti artist Banksey. In a video posted on Instagram and released shortly after the painting Girl with Balloon had been exploded the British artist explained why he did it. The urge to destroy is also a creative urge wrote the artist who is known for creating satirical political art. 3 Banksey s explanation is actually a quote by Pablo Picasso, and by shredding his painting he was perhaps trying to turn the auction itself into a work of art. But almost later there were suspicions that the stunt of shredding the painting must have been known before by Sotheby s Auction House. One former policeman in London, Paul Manning tweeted There s no chance that the frame wasn t screened and device detected prior to race.
