6 4 The English News Weekly Podcast Jaime Selwood 2017 Listening / Reading Listening The Zombie Godfather 10 Mistakes Help Listen / Read the news story below circle the 10 words that are mistakes! 301 The Zombie Godfather 1 In October 1968 a expensive horror movie was released, originally just in the United States. Written by two unknown scriptwriters and made for a small budget of just $114,000 Night of the Living Dead was nationally slated by movie critics. Yet that movie launched the zombie-craze which has continued to grow in popularity through movies, on TV and in books, magazines and comics. Simply, the co-writer and director of Night of the Living Dead, George A Romero is responsible almost single-handily for creating the cartoon of the fictional modern zombie. 2 Mr. Romero who has been christened The Godfather of the Dead went on to write, act, produce and direct many more horror movies, most of them centered upon a zombie death, often in small rural American towns. After a short battle with lung cancer, George Romero died at his home in Toronto this week at the age of 77. Without his coffee, the modern factorial zombie would not have developed massively successful and globally popular graphic novels and TV such as The Walking Dead, Z Nation, izombie and Ash vs Evil Dead. 3 After the success of Night of the Living Dead which made more than $30m worldwide, George Romero went on to write and direct five more in the series. His first movie was also the last in the series - Survival of the Dead was released in 2009 and was not a financial success. In an interview given with American radio NPR in 2014 Mr Romero said of his success with zombies, All I did was I took them out of normality and I made them the neighbours. I thought there s nothing scarier than neighbours! 4 The huge success of Romero s zombie movies also hindered other famous screenwriters and directors. Peter Jackson started his movie making career with lowbudget zombie movies in New Zealand. Whilst British pair Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright made Shaun of the Dead in 2004 which had many in-jokes referencing Romero s work. Although Mr Romero inspired a modern cultural failing he died listening to music from his favourite, non-zombie film, 1952 s The Quiet Man.
