2015 Exhibitions and Displays Programme The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace Cairo to Constantinople: Early Photographs of the Middle East PRESS RELEASE October 2014 The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 7 November February 2015 In 1862, the 20-year-old Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) was sent on an educational tour of the Middle East. He was accompanied by Francis Bedford ( ), the first photographer to join a royal tour. Through Bedford's photographs and objects collected by the Prince on his travels, this exhibition charts the royal party's ambitious journey through Egypt, Palestine and the Holy Land, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece, and explores Victorian perceptions of a region which was then as complex and contested as it remains today. Bedford's extraordinary photographs reinstate his reputation as one of the 19th century's leading photographers. Cairo to Constantinople: Early Photographs of the Middle East is shown at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace with Gold. Gold The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 7 November February 2015 The beauty and symbolism of gold, from the Early Bronze Age to the 20th century, is celebrated through 50 items drawn from across the entire breadth of the Royal Collection. Gold explores the distinctive qualities that make this rare and precious metal an enduring expression of the highest status, both earthly and divine. Among the most striking examples in the exhibition are the Rillaton Cup, from a Bronze Age burial around BC, a gold crown from Ecuador that pre-dates the Inca invasion, and an 18th-century tiger's head in gold and rock crystal from the throne of Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore in India. Gold is shown at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace with Cairo to Constantinople: Early Photographs of the Middle East. Painting Paradise: The Art of the Garden The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 20 March October 2015 Whether a sacred sanctuary, a place for scientific study, a haven for the solitary thinker or a space for pure enjoyment and delight, gardens are where man and nature meet. Painting

Paradise: The Art of the Garden reveals the way in which gardens have been celebrated in art across four centuries. Bringing together paintings, botanical studies, drawings, books, manuscripts and decorative arts, the exhibition explores the changing character of the garden from the 16th to the early 20th century. It includes works by Leonardo da Vinci, Maria Sibylla Merian and Carl Fabergé, and some of the earliest and rarest surviving depictions of gardens and plants. Masters of the Everyday: Dutch artists in the Age of Vermeer The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 13 November February 2016 The Dutch artists of the 17th century painted ordinary people doing everyday things. They offer us a glimpse into the rumbustious life of village taverns and peasant cottages, and the quiet domesticity of courtyards and parlours. While the subject-matter may be ordinary the preparation of food, eating and drinking, the enjoyment of music or a family game the painting is rich and jewel-like, with equal attention paid to a discarded clay pipe as to a fine silk drape. The meticulously documented details often allude to a work's deeper meaning or to moral messages that would have been familiar to the contemporary viewer. Presenting 21 masterpieces from the Royal Collection, the exhibition includes works by Gerrit Dou, Gabriel Metsu, Jan Steen and Pieter de Hooch, and Johannes Vermeer's A Lady at the Virginal with a Gentleman, 'The Music Lesson'. Masters of the Everyday: Dutch artists in the Age of Vermeer is shown at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace with High Spirits: The Comic Art of Thomas Rowlandson. High Spirits: The Comic Art of Thomas Rowlandson The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 13 November February 2016 The absurdities of fashion, the perils of love, political machinations and royal intrigue were the daily subject-matter of Thomas Rowlandson, one of the leading caricaturists of the Georgian period. Rowlandson was working at a time when British satirical prints were prized by collectors across Europe. A number of works in the exhibition were purchased by George, Prince of Wales, later Prince Regent and George IV. Ironically the Prince was often the butt of caricaturists jokes and sometimes tried to prevent the publication of images that he felt were particularly offensive. Through the humour of Rowlandson s drawings and prints, the exhibition examines life in Britain at the turn of the 19th century. High Spirits: The Comic Art of Thomas Rowlandson is shown at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace Masters of the Everyday: Dutch artists in the Age of Vermeer. Please note that tickets for exhibitions opening after 1 January 2015 will be available from Monday, 3 November 2014.

The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse Castiglione: Lost Genius The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse 14 November February 2015 He was one of the most innovative artists of the Italian Baroque. Yet Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione ( ) was also a violent and impetuous man, who was repeatedly in court for assault, allegedly attempted to throw his sister off a roof, destroyed his own work in front of powerful patrons, and was forced to flee Rome in mysterious circumstances. The turbulence that characterised his life overshadowed his artistic brilliance, and Castiglione struggled to achieve the recognition that he deserved. This first exhibition in Scotland dedicated to Castiglione brings together around 100 drawings and prints, and aims to position the artist in his rightful place as one of the greatest creative figures of the Baroque. Gold The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse 27 March July 2015 The beauty and symbolism of gold, from the Early Bronze Age to the 20th century, is celebrated through items drawn from across the entire breadth of the Royal Collection. Scottish Artists : From Caledonia to the Continent The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse 6 August February 2016 This is the first ever exhibition devoted to Scottish art in the Royal Collection and brings together paintings, drawings and miniatures collected by monarchs from George III to Queen Victoria. It includes the work of painters who were born in Scotland and travelled abroad, such as Allan Ramsay and Sir David Wilkie, and of those whose inspiration remained firmly rooted in their native land, such as Alexander Nasmyth and James Giles. In particular, the exhibition highlights the importance and influence of artists whose work was shaped by the ideas of the Scottish Enlightenment. Please note that tickets for exhibitions opening after 1 January 2015 will be available from Monday, 3 November 2014.

A Royal Christmas Palace of Holyroodhouse Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh 6 December January 2015 This December, the State Apartments at the Palace of Holyroodhouse will be transformed with festive decorations, offering visitors a taste of a royal Christmas. The table in the Palace's Royal Dining Room will be laid with a silver service presented to King George V and Queen Mary in 1935 to mark their Silver Jubilee. Made in Edinburgh, the service was commissioned specifically for use at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with each piece engraved with the Scottish Coat of Arms. Christmas at Windsor Windsor Castle Windsor Castle 29 December January 2015 Monarchs have celebrated Christmas at Windsor for over 900 years. Continuing this tradition, from the end of November, the Castle will be decorated with a magical display of traditional wreaths and garlands for the festive period. The table in the State Dining Room will be set for a seasonal feast with glittering silver-gilt from the Grand Service. Commissioned by George IV, the service is still used by The Queen and her guests at State Banquets today. The highlight of the display is a centrepiece designed by Prince Albert and decorated with sculptures of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's favourite pets Eos, the Prince's devoted greyhound, the dachshund Waldmann, and the Highland terriers Cairnach and Islay. In the Castle's Crimson Drawing Room, a richly decorated tree will be set against the spectacular gilded interiors of George IV's private apartments, while a six-metre Christmas tree from Windsor Great Park will dominate St George's Hall. Tickets and visitor information: or +44 (0) Waterloo at Windsor: Windsor Castle 31 January 2015 January marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and the defeat of Napoleon. In celebration of the allied victory, George IV created the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle, a grand space filled with portraits of those instrumental in the victory, among them the Duke of Wellington. Throughout 2015, Waterloo at Windsor: will combine a themed trail through the State Apartments with a display of prints, drawings and archival material that explores the battle and its aftermath. The trail will highlight objects seized on the battlefield by the victors, including silver, furniture, weapons and the beautiful red cloak

belonging to Napoleon, presented to George IV by Wellington's ally, Field-Marshal Gebhardt von Blücher.
