1 Discover an Emerald Jewel in the City of Kitchener HIDDEN VALLEY REVEALED September 16 October 22, 2017 The purpose of the show is to highlight aspects of Hidden Valley, Kitchener. Art work will relate specifically to: Hidden Valley: The woods, fields and wetlands; The mature Oaks, Maples, Cherries, Beeches, and Hemlock groves; The ephemeral pools in spring, where Jefferson Salamanders mate; Endangered species at risk, including Jefferson Salamanders, And a Butternut tree, And threatened species including Woods Sedge, Ringed Gentians, Barn Swallows, Chimney Swifts, Least Bitterns, little brown Bats, northern bats, and rusty patched bumblebees; Species of concern, including Bald Eagles, Canada Warblers, Common Nighthawks, Eastern Wood Peewee Eastern milk snakes, Monarch Butterflies and Snapping Turtles. West Virginia White Butterfly; The many wildflowers and Carolinian plants; The migratory waterfowl; The creeks that flow to the Grand and contribute to the Region s drinking water; The hills and valleys that are part of the Waterloo moraine that filter and store our water. 2 Hello Fellow Artists, This Call for Entry arose from the heart and mind of one of our artist members, Daphne Nicholls. Sadly, Daphne passed away in August of 2016 following a battle with Ovarian Cancer. Daphne and several friends gathered to make plans for a juried show Hidden Valley Revealed. She approached Faith Hieblinger, the Executive Curator of Homer Watson House & Gallery which resulted in an approval for a Juried Show featuring this theme. The show details are outlined in the Pre-registration form below. The show will be scheduled for September 16, 2017 to October 22, A nominal fee of $20 to those with a membership to Homer Watson House & Gallery. Daphne found the words of Emily Carr very inspiring. Here is one quote she felt would relate well to this show : Form is fine, and colour and design and subject matter, but that which does not speak to the heart is worthless. It is the intensity of feeling you have about a thing that counts. Much of the remainder of this document was written by Daphne before she died. Why Hidden Valley? A detailed description of the 200 acre property known as Hidden Valley follows. What better way to celebrate a fragment of Canada s natural heritage than by showing your vision of this environmentally sensitive green oasis in the heart of the Region of Waterloo? This green oasis, which is one of the most biodiverse natural areas in Kitchener, consists of 200 acres of mature forest, wetlands and open fields near Highway 8, the Grand River and Fairway Road. It is encircled by Hidden Valley Road. A decade ago, Daphne organized an art show at the Kitchener Library Gallery, Hidden Valley, a Celebration or a Lament in which 30 artists from this area highlighted some of Hidden Valley s beautiful vistas, wonderful wildflowers, and the threats which could destroy it forever. In addition to its beauty and biodiversity, Hidden Valley is on a section of the Waterloo Moraine that filters water going into the Grand River, just above where water is siphoned off to the Mannheim Water Treatment facility, to provide 25% of the Region s drinking water. It is home to endangered species... Jefferson salamanders, wood sedges and fringed gentians. It is also home to over 110 species of nesting birds, songbirds, migratory birds, deer, fox and too many beavers. The many bird species nest and forage for survival in the diverse habitats- forest, wetland and open fields- to be found in this special 200 acre environment. So, please seriously consider being part of this juried exhibition which will show the importance of our air, our water and maintaining the percentage of green space in Waterloo Region. Open to all Gallery members in good standing with Homer Watson House & Gallery. Membership of $20.00 can be paid by cheque, credit card, cash or online before August 30, The membership is for one year from the date of purchase. 2. Artists must pay a $20 Submission Fee before or during Artwork Take-In. (This is not the Membership Fee). 3. Artists may submit 1 or 2 pieces of artwork. 4. Only original work will be accepted. 5. The outside size is limited to a maximum of 36 x 36 (1,296 square inches) for each piece. 6. Homer Watson House & Gallery s Commission is 40% on each sale. 7. One of them will be an Environmentalist who is familiar with the trails, flora and fauna of Hidden Valley. This Call for Entry has been written one year in advance to allow the entrants the earliest possible dates of the year to view and take photos of this property in different seasons. Terms of Entry 1. Framing should be done with neutral coloured mats and frames should be in good condition or Canvas wrapped stretcher frames are acceptable. 2. Each picture must have rings or screw eyes on both sides at the back of the picture, placed not more than 6 down from the top of the frame (so that the picture does not lean out from the wall) and the wire (in its hung position) at least 3 below the top of the frame (so that the clamp will not show). When work is very small put eyes 3 down. If very large put eyes. of way down from top. 3. Wet pictures, faulty and poorly wired frames will not be accepted for entry. A sufficient gauge of wire and screw eyes for the weight of the artwork must be properly mounted. Single strand wire or wire substitutes will not stand up to the handling required in an art show. Artists are responsible for any damage caused by failed hanging equipment. 4. Only original work derived from inspiration of Hidden Valley will be accepted. No copies of works by other visual artists, whether paintings, illustrations or classroom works which have been demonstrated on by instructors may be submitted. 5. Entrants will agree to have images released in newspapers, magazine articles and social media to allow promotion of the plight of Hidden Valley. 6. Insurance is provided to protect the art work from vandalism and theft. A value must be given for all works submitted. Please indicate if the paintings is NFS (not for sale). In the event of a loss, verification of the value of art work will be required. All reasonable care will be exercised in handling entries while at the Homer Watson House & Gallery. 7. The gallery is not responsible for accidental breakage of glass or other fragile article damage, including frames. 8. All works that are not oil or acrylic must be protected either by glass, Plexiglas, or a coating on the media itself. Encaustic works must be hard or coated. 9. Art shows at the Homer Watson House & Gallery should not be entered unless the art work can be delivered and picked up on the required date and time (or arrangements made to do so with someone else). All works must be signed out before leaving the premises. 10. Art work must hang in the Gallery until the show is completed. 11. Homer Watson House & Gallery reserves the right of final decision on suitability of subject matter. 12. The juror s decision is final. Accepted works will remain in the exhibition until pick-up, which is Sunday October 22, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 4:30 or Monday October 23, 2017, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. 13. Items not picked up within one year of the exhibit will become the property of The Gallery unless a loan agreement is secured.
