2 Lakeview Foundation: Paying it Forward When Zoe Kelly-Soldner was a patient at Lakeview Hospital, she was given a fleece blanket with polar bears on it that was made and donated by a volunteer. I thought it was the most wonderful thing in the world for people to do that, said Zoe. When she was planning her 11th birthday party, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. She told her mom, Erin Kelly, that she wanted to have her friends make blankets and donate them to the hospital. Zoe, her younger sister Molly, and her mom went out and bought enough fleece to make 9 blankets. Zoe and her friends brought their finished blankets to the hospital on Jan. 26 to donate them. Zoe paid it forward. Zoe and her friends knew that the blankets they made will mean a lot to the patients who receive them. How can you pay it forward? Lakeview Foundation s annual fundraising helps us deliver healthcare services to patients in need. Money is placed in one of two funds healthcare access (for Hospice, Prescription Assistance Program, Parish Nursing and Diabetes Education) or greatest need (unrestricted dollars for capital or services of greatest benefit to our patients). 3 Sample Directions: Materials needed: Fabric needs to be at least 40 inches or wider (most are 54 inches) Baby/Toddler - 1 to 1 1/2 yards (in both fabrics) Child - 1 3/4 yards (in both fabrics) Teen/Adult - 2 yards (in both fabrics) Feel free to make your blanket (s) bigger for taller or bigger people, or a shawl for older people Things you need: Two pieces of fleece the same size. Piece may be the same pattern, two different patterns, two plain colors or a pattern on one side and a plain color on the other. Scissors (sharp ones) Tape measure or ruler one 4" x 4" piece of paper To get started: **The best part these measurements are completely custom to you! I used 1 yard pieces for my newborn baby this size fits an infant great. For bigger children, like my 3 year old, I used the 1 3/4 yard pieces. The two pieces of fleece should be the same size. Pieces may be the same pattern (which is what I used), two different patterns, two plain colors or a pattern on one side and a plain color on the other. Scissors or rotary cutter (will need cutting board for rotary cutter) Tape measure or ruler A 4 x 4 piece of paper Tie blanket instructions: Take your two pieces of fleece. Put one piece on top of the other lining up the edges so they are even. (One side will be the front and the other side will be the back ) Trim off any selvage around the edges of your fleece. ( Cut as straight as possible, but remember, these blankets are forgiving!) I like to use my rotary cutter and cutting board, but if you don t have this, don t worry, a sharp pair of scissors will work fine. Find your 4 x4 paper and lay it on the corner of your blanket. Then cut out the corner through both layers. Do this to all four corners.

4 Time to make the fringes. Cut 4 inches into both fleeces at 1 wide. it is easiest to lay the tape measure or ruler across from the corner of the cut out from one corner to the other. The fringes don t have to be exactly 1, but keep them close to that. Turn the whole blanket over and tie the remaining fringes into knots until your blanket is finished. Here s the best part Let you child enjoy, or give as a gift! Proceed to cut 1 intervals on all four sides. Starting on one side, start tying you knots (using one fringe from each fleece.) Tie knots on every other fringe around the entire blanket. Thank-You!!
