These figures may be supplemented Whore nocoaaoary with information furnished earlier and published as document L/878/Rev.l, Production of cotton textiles at current levels is estimated at 27 million yards. The main items of cotton goods produced locally are sarongs, sarees,towels and cotton piecegoods. B. The import duties of cotton manufactures are as under; Prof. Gen. Rate Rate ad val..cts ad val,.cts Cotton crochet thread 15$ Cotton lace and not excluding cotton mosquito netting and fishing and netting but including curtain netting 15$ 25$ Cotton manufactures (including apparel and sewing thread) other than admixtures of any material n.e.s. 15$ Cotton piecegoods, including cotton mosquito netting 6$ 11$ Cotton thread for embroidery 15$ Cotton yarn and twist for knitting banians and weaving textiles proved to P.C.C. to have been imported for handloom industry Free 10$ Other 2g 12«Cotton banians including vests Sizes 14 inches below, oach 1.50 Sizes 14 " and 26 each 1.75 Sizes 26 " and above, each 2,00 C. K«arly all imports of cotton, artificial silk and sill: textiles have boon brought under licence in order to operate a release which has been granted by the Gj.TT to operate the Industrial Products *'»ct for the protection of the local textile industry. Importers of textiles are required to buy 1 yard of locally made textiles to import 5 yards 0* foreign made textiles.
3 C0M.III/W.2(g) Page 3 In addition to the above mentioned licensing, which all importers of textiles have to conform to, on additional form of licencing is in operation to ensure that imports of certain countries are allowed only by Ceylonese importers. There are no internal revenue duties or fiscal charges on these items. There is no State trading or monopolies in respect of these items except for the cotton yarn imports made by the Commissioner of Cottage Industries for distribution to the textile handloams.
