5 FREE FORM THREAD PAINTING (Jewelry Pouch) (This project is ideal for the beginner, intermediate and advanced sewer; they will get to practice what quilters refer to as stippling.) Materials required: 3/4 yard solid color quilted fabric 3/4 yard contrast cotton print fabric 2 twelve inch zippers and 1 seven inch zipper to match print fabric 1 package 1/2-inch wide double fold bias tape to match fabric. If purchasing by the yard (2-yards). 1 spool of matching all purpose sewing thread Water soluble stabilizer Assortment of thread clippings approximately 8 to 12-inches long. You will need enough to cover the top of an 20 X 12 area. Keep each group of colors separate; you can store the thread clippings in a baggy. 1 marking pen or pencil Darning and Embroidery Foot Feed Cover Plate (If your machine does NOT have drop feed) Preparation: Cut solid quilted fabric into two (2) 20 X 12 rectangles. Round out the corners. fabric. It may be necessary to snip off a section of the zipper at the bottom. Do this after it has been sewn in. Sew-in the second 12 zipper using flat method construction between the 6-inch and one of the 5- inch print fabrics. Line-up the top edge of the zipper with the left edge of the fabric. The top of the tab should sit approximately 1/2-inch from the left edge of the fabric. It may be necessary to snip off a section of the zipper at the bottom. Do this after it has been sewn in. Sew-in the remaining 7-inch zipper using flat method between the two 5- inch print fabrics placing the zipper at the far right. Center the zippered print fabric (Right side up, so you can open and close the zippers) over one piece of the solid quilted fabric. To join these 2 layers of fabric, stitch the zipper section into place by straight stitching 1/4-inch from the edge of the fabric along each zipper. Edgestitch the top edge and the bottom edge of the print fabric and then stitch 1/4-inch from the edgestitch. Cut print fabric as follows: 1 piece 12 X 2-1/2, 1 piece 12 X 6, 2 pieces 12 X 5. Turn in the long edges of each piece by 1/2-inch and press. Sewing Instructions: (Zipper Insertion) Sewing Instructions: (Thread Painting:) Sew-in one of the 12 zipper s using flat method construction between the 2-1/2 and 6-inch print fabric. Line-up the top edge of the zipper with the left edge of the fabric. The top of the tab should sit approximately 1/2-inch from the left edge of the 11 Lay second piece of quilted fabric right side up on a flat surface. Drop thread cuttings onto the fabric in a meandering fashion. Start with lightest color and work your way through to the darkest colors. Once your thread is positioned as desired, cover
6 the area with 2 layers of water-soluble stabilizer. Using thread to match the quilted fabric, free-hand sew in a meandering fashion over the thread. This is also known as stippling. You will need to lower or cover the feed dogs on your machine and use a Darning and Embroidery foot. Stippling is done using a straight stitch. Do not forget to lower the presser foot when you first begin. Stipple until the entire area of thread is covered with stitching. Finishing: Place the quilted fabric with the layers of thread and stitching in water to remove the water soluble stabilizer. Lay the fabric flat to dry. Sandwich the thread painting fabric and the zippered sections together, right side out. Stitch the layers together 1/4-inch from the edge. Bind the raw edge using the 1/2-inch double fold bias tape. SPECTACULAR STITCHES (This project illustrates how you can convert narrow 5 to 7mm decorative stitching to extra wide embellishments. You can create dramatic effects running stitches side by side) Materials required: 1/2 yard Dupioni silk 1/2 yard contrast Dupioni silk Stabilizer 2 colors of your choice of decorative embroidery thread 1 spool regular sewing thread inch pillow form Marking pencil Preparation: Cut 1 piece Dupioni silk into a 16-inch square. Mark the center diagonal line from one corner to the other corner on this piece of fabric. Position a strip of stabilizer under this bias 12 centerline marking. Cut 1 piece of the same color silk to measure 16 X 12 and another to measure 16 x 8. Cut two 4-1/2 wide strips (on the bias) of the contrast color Dupioni silk. Mark the centerline of each strip of fabric. Position a strip of stabilizer under each bias strip. Decorative Sewing Instructions: Thread your machine with the embroidery thread. Select your favorite stitch pattern from your machine and stitch to the right of the centerline marking on each of the bias strips from top to bottom. (You may need to decrease your tension slightly for sewing on bias fabric; do a test first). We used decorative stitch # 03 on Singer Confidence model If your machine has Mirror Image, mirror the pattern and then stitch to the left of the centerline on each of the bias strips from top to bottom. If you do not have the Mirror function, PIVOT the fabric and continue to sew to the right of the centerline. Press the finished stitching. Select another of your favorite stitch patterns from your machine and stitch to the right of the centerline marking on the 16 X 16 square front of the pillow. (You may need to decrease your tension slightly for sewing on bias fabric; do a test first). We used decorative stitch # 04 on Singer Confidence model If your machine has Mirror Image, mirror the pattern and then stitch to the left of the centerline on each of the bias strips from top to bottom. If you do not have the Mirror function, PIVOT the fabric and continue to sew to the right of the centerline. Press the finished stitching. Position the bias strips 2 inches from the center stitch and pin into place.
7 Use a Pin Stitch, Blanket Stitch, or a Blind hem Stitch along each edge of the bias strip to attach it to the pillow front. Press. Finishing Instructions: Turn in one of the 16-inch edges on each of the two back pieces by 1/2-inch and press. Edgestitch into place. Overlap these pieces so that they form a perfect 16 X 16 square. Baste the edges together. Layer the front of the pillow over the back of the pillow, right sides together and pin. Sew 1/2-inch seams all around. Turn inside out. Press. Fit pillow form into pillow casing. PHENOMENAL FELTING (Carryall) (This project is ideal for those who like to think GREEN. This is a great way to use discarded sweaters and other knit goods) Place the pillowcase in the washing machine and run through the wash/rinse process. Dry in the dryer. Repeat the washing and drying process four TIMES. If you would like the fabric to felt even more, repeat the process until the texture you desire is reached. Cutting and Sewing Instructions: Cut off the top of the sweater just below the sleeves at the armhole. This will become the bottom of the bag. The ribbed edge at the bottom will become the top or opening of the bag. - Set your sewing machine so that it sews 3 to 4 stitches per inch. Turn the sweater inside out. Cut webbing strip in half and pin to the right sides of the front and back of sweater along the edge that you just cut, 4-inches from right and left edges. Materials required: Old pure wool sweater. Solid or multi-color 2 yards of 1 webbing to match color of sweater 1 spool of matching all purpose sewing thread Dishwashing liquid detergent (or any other soap with alkaline) Pillow case Preparation: Felting occurs when pure wool is shocked into shrinking by transferring it from very hot water to cold water. The scales of the inner core of the wool tangle and mesh with one another causing the fiber to shrink. The looser the knit, the better it will felt. 100% pure wool felts best. You may do this process by hand or in the washing machine. Sew across the bottom of the bag through all thicknesses. Edgestitch along both sides of the webbing from bottom to top on both the front and back of the carryall. COURTESY: Vivian Lavinskas Singer Sewing Co. Place the sweater in the pillowcase. Set washing machine to cold wash/hot rinse. Add four tablespoons liquid detergent to the wash cycle. 13
