Design by Embroidery Library WHAT YOU WILL LEARN TODAY: Digitizing and Design Thread and Bobbins Needles Stabilizer Hooping Tension PAGE 2
DIGITIZING AND DESIGN: Communicating with your digitizer Is design suitable for fabric or garment? Using stock designs How do you determine if a job cannot be done? Design by Embroidery Library PAGE 3
DIGITIZING AND DESIGN: Using a left chest design on a cap, before altering it to fit can be problematic. Shortening the large, cursive U altered the logo enough to fit on a cap without distortion. PAGE 4
DIGITIZING AND DESIGN: This design is digitized so that all letters are connected. PAGE 5
DIGITIZING AND DESIGN: The running stitch border is fuzzy and unattractive. This issue can be solved with the use of a satin stitch border, which improves the quality of the design. PAGE 6
DIGITIZING AND DESIGN: Although the design is the same, a smaller version of the sweat shirt design with fewer stitches is necessary to embroider the cap. Design Courtesy of Rich Medcraft PAGE 7
THREAD AND BOBBINS: Choose and stick with Rayon or Polyester Go with quality thread and bobbins Magnetic bobbins are a popular choice Thread breaks may indicate a needle problem Design by Urban Threads PAGE 8
Design by Embroidery Designs/Dakota THREAD AND BOBBINS: Specialty threads can be substituted into stock designs. PAGE 9
THREAD AND BOBBINS: Designs can be digitized to accommodate specialty threads. Design Courtesy of Lee Caroselli-Barnes Stitched in Classic Rayon #40 With matte and metallic threads added PAGE 10
NEEDLES: Use needle size appropriate for your thread When there is a choice, go with smaller needle Ballpoint for knit garments Sharp for woven garments Design by Urban Threads Knit Materials = Unstable Fabric Woven Materials = Stable Fabric PAGE 11
NEEDLES: Use of a dull needle that was the wrong size produced holes in the fabric. Looping on the H and the dot on the I still connected to the stem need to be fixed. PAGE 12
NEEDLES: Always choose the smallest needle suggested for the thread you are using. PAGE 13
STABILIZING AND FINISHING: Use Tear Away on woven garments Use Cut Away on knits garments Stick-On backing for small items Topping used on fabrics with nap Design by Embroidery Library PAGE 14
STABILIZING AND FINISHING: Stick-On Backings are used for items that are too difficult to hoop. PAGE 15
STABILIZING AND FINISHING: In the first example, you see too many stitches, wrong underlay, wrong stabilizer and no pull compensation result in puckering and shaky lines. The second version still has too many stitches, however there is improvement. PAGE 16
STABILIZING AND FINISHING: When the backing used on a left chest garment is too heavy for the fabric, the outline of the backing shows through to the front. This is called the badge effect. PAGE 17
STABILIZING AND FINISHING: Topping was not used with stitching on fleece. Stitches are distinct when topping is used. PAGE 18
HOOPING: Hoop needs to hold item perfectly still Performance wear demands special attention Magnetic hoops solve some concerns Design by ANALI Exquisite Needlework PAGE 19
HOOPING: Design Courtesy of Jane Swanzy Standard Hoop Magnetic Hoop PAGE 20
TENSION: Be sure to gauge top thread tension Be sure to gauge bobbin thread tension Design by Embroidery Library PAGE 21
TENSION: Upper Thread Tension Gauge Lower Thread, or Bobbin, Tension Gauge PAGE 22
TENSION: PAGE 23
TROUBLESHOOTING: Puckering Design registration Thread breaks Distortion Damaged fabric Design by ANALI Exquisite Needlework PAGE 24
PUCKERING: Among the problems that produced the puckering on this shirt were poor digitizing and wrong backing. PAGE 25
REGISTRATION: Too many stitches was one cause for this design to be out of registration. PAGE 26
REGISTRATION: In the first example, the run stitch border beneath the children s hands is out of registration. Changing the run stitch to a satin stitch improved the quality of the design. PAGE 27
THREAD BREAKS: Thread breaks, so often not the fault of your thread, can be caused by poor needles, insufficient machine maintenance, or wrong tension. PAGE 28
DISTORTION: PAGE 29
DISTORTION: PAGE 30
DISTORTION: Design appears on a heavy, ribbed necktie. Small letters needed to be tied together. The M on team needed to be fixed, as well as the lock knot on the run stitch. PAGE 31
DAMAGED FABRIC: When birds nesting occurs, it can damage the garment and is time consuming to remove. PAGE 32
