1 Sonoma Stole Carol Sunday Finished Size: 88" long, 11" wide plus 3½" fringe. Wide ribs on the bias are the secret to the beautiful drape of this crescent-shaped stole, and the fringe is easy - it s knit-in. Flattering and versatile - wear as a scarf, a stole, a wrap or a shawl. Yarn for Carol's colorway: Sunday Knits 3-ply yarns (99 yd / 90 m per 20-gm skein; 1 skein each in Nirvana (merino cashmere): espresso, cedar, emerald, moss; Eden (merino): paprika, curry, rose, zinnia, aster, raisin, prune, fir, lagoon, twig; Angelic (merino angora): wheat, black, nut. Needles: Size 5 US (3.75 mm). Notions: Tapestry needle, crochet hook. Gauge: 25 sts and 28 rows = 4" in St st. Skills used: Increases and decreases, wide rib, Kitchener stitch. Construction: Work stole in two sections and graft. Change colors or cut yarn every two rows, using loose ends to make up the fringe. Sunday Knits All rights reserved. v

2 Sonoma stole In a nutshell: Stole is knit in two sections grafted together at the top. Sections are knit on the bias in ever-widening ribs, starting with two 6-stitch ribs followed by two 8-st ribs, two 10-st ribs, two 12-st ribs and ending with all 14-st ribs. To create the bias, 1 decrease is made every fourth row; increases are made every row until the stole is 56 sts wide, then every other row until the stole is 72 sts wide, then every fourth row to maintain width. Rib pattern: Work two 6-st ribs (p6, k6) followed by two 8-st ribs, two 10-st ribs, two 12-st ribs, all the rest 14-st ribs. Decreases: At the end of every other odd-numbered row, if the second to the last stitch is: a purl st... p2tog, a knit st... ssk Fringe: At the beginning of every odd-numbered row start with a new strand of yarn. Measure the new strand to a length of 4" and holding it at that point together with the strand from previous row, work first stitch; or if first stitch is an increase st (eg. pf/ kb) work just the first half (eg. pf), with both strands together; work remainder of row with new strand; pull fringe snug. Notes: The supplementary charts on pages 5-6 may be useful for following the rib pattern and the increases and decreases together with the beginning color sequence. Most color changes take place at the beginning of odd-numbered rows, which is where the fringe is worked. If changing color on the non-fringe edge, splicing (Russian splice is recommended) the 2 strands at this point will eliminate the need to weave in loose ends later. SECTION 1: Color Codes Colors are coded as follows: W - wheat Cu - curry Pa - paprika Ro - rose Z - zinnia A - aster Ra - raisin P - prune B - black Es - espresso Ce - cedar F - fir Em - emerald L - lagoon Tw - twig M - moss N - nut Color Sequence Counting CO row as first row, work the following number of rows: 4 W, 2 Es, 2 Cu, 2 Ce, 2 Pa, 2 F, 2 Ro, 2 Em, 2 Z, 2 L, 2 A, 2 Tw, 2 Ra, 2 M, 2 P, 2 N, 2 B; 18 W, 1 Em, 2 Ra, 1 Em; 22 Cu, 1 L, 2 P, 1 L; 22 Pa, 1 Tw, 2 B, 1 Tw; 22 Ro, 1 M, 2 Es, 1 M; 22 Z, 1 N, 2 Ce, 1 N; 22 A, 1 W, 2 F, 1 W; 22 Ra, 1 Cu, 2 Em, 1 Cu; 22 P; 2 Pa, 2 F, 2 Ro, 2 Em, 2 Z, 2 L, 2 A, 2 Tw, 2 Ra, 2 M, 2 P, 2 N, 2 B, 2 W, 2 Es, 2 Cu, 2 Ce, 2 Pa.
