Presentation Agenda 1. Motivation 2. Technical Background 3. NVG Training Approaches Simulated NVG Stimulated NVG 4. Conclusion 3
Motivation Overall increase of night-missions Military Civil Increasing number of near-accident situations and accidents Massive mission impacts 4
Presentation Agenda 1. Motivation 2. Technical Background 3. NVG Training Approaches Simulated NVG Stimulated NVG 4. Conclusion 5
Technical Background NVG Systems Definition are optical systems used for example by aircrews when operation in a low-light environment. They are rugged and highly portable light amplification systems that are completely dependent on the available light in the scene or from IR illuminators. 6
Technical Background NVG Systems Log sensitivity Vis A B C Wavelength, nm B = rotary wing, C = fixed wing Comparison: NVG sensitive to IR energy than to the wavelengths of visible light. 7
Technical Background NVG Systems Photon detection and amplification Classification into Generations Gen. 0,1 photon acceleration low sensitivity additional IR illumination necessary Gen. 2 amplification and multiplication use of multi channel plate (MCP) higher amplification smaller devices Gen. 3 amplification and multiplication MCP Gallium-Arsenic photocathode coating improved control electronics 8
Technical Background NVG Systems Principle 9
Technical Background NVG Systems Tiger Helicopter Helmet Civil NVG Configuration 10
Presentation Agenda 1. Motivation 2. Technical Background 3. NVG Training Approaches Simulated NVG Stimulated NVG 4. Conclusion 11
NVG Training Approaches Simulated Approach The NVG image is presented via dedicated screens that show a simulated picture of the NVG scenery in order to create a realistic NV image representation Stimulated Approach Original NVG equipment is stimulated by external measures in order to create a realistic image as perceived through the goggles 12
Simulated NVG Approaches Replica of night vision goggles with small CRT monitors inside Advantages Realistic image achievable Dynamic scenario Disadvantages No real equipment Size & weight differences No moving instruments High effort to create realistic image Difficult correlation to OTW image Low Pilot acceptance 13
Stimulated NVG Approaches Original Night Vision Goggles are stimulated via the projected image Advantages Real Equipment Original Weight & Handling High NV image quality Real Life Behavior Pilot Acceptance Disdvantages Sensible Equipment Realistic Stimulation hard to achieve 14
Stimulated NVG Approaches Model Boards Physical Representation of a training area Modifiable Illumination conditions Advantages Use of original NVG Realistic Image Disadvantages Small scale Incorrect perspective Static scenario Little interaction Difficult to modify quickly 15
Stimulated NVG Approaches NVG Stimulation with common Projectors CRT, LCD, LCoS OTW image tuned to give good NV performance OTW Image representation in the red spectrum Advantages Use of original NVG Acceptable NV image Disadvantages Unrealistic OTW image Pilot can still orientate without NVG Might lead to negative training 16
Stimulated NVG Approaches Laser Based Stimulation Approach AVIOR VisIR Projector OTW image projection IR image projection Advantages Use of original NVG Highest NV image quality Images independently tunable Easily adaptable to different light conditions Full details in both images Parallel Pilot training possible No negative training Disadvantages? 17
Stimulated NVG Approaches 18
Stimulated NVG Approaches Conclusion Effective NVG Training requires highly realistic training scenarios Basic Training can be realized with simplified systems Critical Mission Training requires highest stimulation fidelity Stimulation approaches based on modified OTW image are not sufficient for the high training needs Stimulation with 2 independent images can overcome this problem and provide the required training fidelity 19
