1 Focus In the last session you learned about the fundamentals of the flow of electricity. In this session you will have the opportunity to apply this theory and learn a new skill. Fabricating electronic components provides additional insight into the world of electronics and the safe handling of electricity. The focus of today s session is the review and practice of proper soldering technique. Soft soldering (soldering) and hard soldering (brazing) are techniques of assembly that students have explored in Manufacturing Processes. Instructors might highlight this fact to further help students develop greater understanding of this key manufacturing process. Be sure that they understand the difference between soldering and brazing. Think About It Electronic equipment depends upon good design and proper construction techniques. Failure of electronic components is often due to improper soldering. In the manufacture and repair of electronic equipment, soldering is an extremely important skill. The ability to properly solder is a skill that can be mastered with regular practice. Do you have any previous experience with soldering generally, or with soldering electronic components? 8HFCC MODULE 2-1

2 Session Activities/Outcomes: During this 4-hour session you will: 1. Learn about soldering techniques used in industry. 2. Practice proper preparation techniques to solder. 3. Solder components practicing standard electrical safety. 4. Review techniques to evaluate soldered items. Activity 1 Lecturette: The importance of soldering in industry Automated and manual soldering techniques Soldering safety Examination of soldering samples Vocabulary Moment: Point out that the term solder can be used correctly as a noun or a verb. Used as a noun solder is a metal alloy made up of lead and tin. Present correct and incorrect examples of automated and manually soldered workpieces. Point out deficiencies in the bad examples. Look for cold joints, insufficient solder, and improper component insertion or attachment. 8HFCC MODULE 2-2

3 Activity 2 Inspect a soldering iron for defects in wiring and tip condition. Prepare a new soldering iron tip for use by performing initial tinning process. Prepare a used soldering iron tip for use by cleaning and tinning. Prepare to solder. Explain the soldering iron as to its components and what electrical principle is demonstrated by the tip getting hot. Explain proper procedure for tinning (clean, tin, wipe). Instructor should emphasize the need for practice of soldering techniques to achieve mastery. Activity 3 Prepare and solder joints of components mounted on lug type connector. Solder installed components on a terminal strip Solder installed components on a printed circuit board. Highlight the significance of the mechanical connection. Stress proper tail length through board. Leave tinned. Clean soldering iron after use and properly store for next use. Activity 4 Inspect solder joints for cold solder, improper flow and other defects. Instructor should review student work and provide direction for improvement. 8HFCC MODULE 2-3
