1 This test consists of twenty-five multiple-choice / true-false questions. All questions are from the video: Wire Preparation (DVD-59C). Each multiple-choice question has only one most correct answer. Circle the letter corresponding to your selection for each test item. When there is a true-false question, circle true or false. If you wish to change an answer, erase your choice completely. You should read through the questions and answer those you are sure of first. After your first pass through the test, then go back and answer the questions that you were not sure of. If two answers appear to be correct, pick the answer that seems to be the most correct response. When you are finished, check to make sure you have answered all of the questions. Turn in the test materials to the instructor. The passing grade for this test is 70% (18 correct answers or better). Good luck! 1

3 1. The part of the wire that carries electrical current is the a. insulation b. teflon c. conductor d. terminal 2. AWG is short for a. American Wire Gauge b. Average Wire Gain c. Always Wire Good d. None of the above 3. An 8 AWG wire is larger than a 14 AWG wire (True or False) 4. Different color insulation is used to a. specify wire gauge b. identify the wires c. identify the type of insulation d. distinguish power and signal wires 5. Coaxial cable a. is used in cable television systems b. is used to broadcast radio frequencies c. has a single center conductor surrounded by insulation 6. Cross talk is a. when many people talk at the same time b. the coupling of signals from one wire to another that creates interference c. noise on the transmission lines d. the transfer of technology 7. The purpose of wire preparation is to crimp lots of wires in advance (True or False) 8. The main safety issue in wire preparation is a. sharp blades b. moving parts c. heat from thermal strippers 9. In addition to the stripping machine, wire processors may consist of a. a soldering station b. a hand crimping station c. pre-feeder, marking system and wire stacker d. a telephone for asking questions 3
4 10. If roller gap and pressure is set too tight a. the wire is rewound onto the spool b. a red light flashes c. insulation may be damaged d. the wire may curl or kink 11. Partial strips are done a. to protect the wire strands b. when complete strips are not required c. to prepare the wire for tinning d. when the rollers aren t properly adjusted 12. Wayback a. protects the wire from being rewound b. retracts the blades to prevent conductor scraping or scratching c. sets the blade cutting depth d. allows the cutting and stripping of very short wires 13. An insulation slug is when the stripped insulation hits your face (True or False) 14. To prevent wire jamming a. decrease the cutting depth b. make sure the feed speed is faster than the cut speed c. make sure the cut speed is faster than the feed speed d. have different front and rear cutting depths 15. If strip length is inconsistent, the problem is likely to be dull cutting blades (True or False) 16. If the edges of the insulation are frayed, it usually means a. blade cutting depth is too deep b. there is too much roller pressure c. wayback value isn t enough d. cutting blades are dull 17. A strip should be rejected when a. the insulation is damaged b. when the conductor is damaged c. when the strip length is too short 18. Manual wire preparation is done a. in low volume applications b. when wires won t fit in machines c. when machines are not available 4
5 19. A well-sharpened Swiss army knife is an acceptable tool for removing insulation (True or False) 20. Never use thermal strippers to a. remove the insulation slug b. remove PVC insulation c. tin wires 21. In thermal stripping, it may be acceptable when conductor strands have a slight discoloration (True or False) 22. Semiautomatic stripping machines a. strip the wire automatically when it touches the trigger/stop b. strip the wire at preset intervals c. strip the wire when the operator presses strip d. strip the wire the moment air is connected to the machine 23. On semiautomatic machines, conductor or insulation damage means a. insufficient air is being supplied to the stripper b. cutting depth should be increased c. blades are probably dull or misaligned 24. Multi-purpose cables may be prepared using wire processors, semiautomatic machines and a variety of hand tools (True or False) 25. Identify the improper method of tinning wires: a. place the end of the wire in a wave of molten solder b. dip the wire in a solder pot c. move the wire over a solder coated soldering iron d. move a solder coated tip over a stationary wire 5
