3 Facet Analysis Facet analysis is a technique used in many synthetic controlled vocabularies Thesauri and classification schemes can use facet analysis to create the tables of terms to use in the creation of descriptors or notation It is best learned by doing so you will do a series of exercises to take you through facet analysis, foci building, and using an analytico-synthetic CV in indexing.

4 Facet Analysis Definitions Facet: a concept group or category; it may have a label, such as type of dish or dish, if the concept area is cooking Facet analysis: the process of creating concept groups or categories, ordering them, and locating terms (foci) within them Facets are used in analytico-synthetic systems (that is, CVs that use synthesis)

5 Tables vs. Facets in Synthesis Facets are constructed carefully and the terms in a facet are all of a kind and share semantic relationships Synthetic tables may have any kind of term in them. Example: LCSH free-floating subdivisions is a table that includes the following terms: Abbreviations Geographic information systems History 18 th century Readings with music

6 Facet Analysis Exercise: Part 1 This exercise (part 1) based on AJ Foskett exercise A facet is a high level category; and it is a category that represents a type or a characteristic of division The easiest way to discover and name facets is to say these objects can be divided by X Example: Divide fiction books by genre Genre is the name of the facet Listen to the next 3 slides before starting Part 1

7 Sample cookbook facet These cookbooks can be divided by type of: dish So Dish or type of Dish is a facet that may be applied to the domain of cookbooks or cooking. What are the other facets that you see in the list of cookbooks? What facet does Montana indicate?

8 Another one So you could also divide this group of cookbooks up by geographic area - geographic area or place is a facet that is needed for this document collection NOTE that not all of the documents will relate to all of the facets (you might have The New Hampshire Cookbook, which does not have a dish facet). For this exercise, find as many facets as might be applicable based on the subject matter expressed in the titles.

10 Answers to the 1 st exercise These facets are illustrative and are only one possibility Not all possible facets are listed The facets you chose should be responsive to your context and users Research lab with nutrition researcher users Cooking school with students and faculty users Public library with multiple user types type of item facet often used to group general items in an area (encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.)
