1 District 5170 Club #487 Chartered 1924 Volume #20 Issue #34 August 25, 2009 RUN DOWN, UP LOAD ON CLUB RUNNER As chair of the Club Runner Committee, Cary Matsuoka was asked by the Board to give us an overview of the program. First of all, what is it? Club Runner is generic software for all types of organizations like service clubs, athletic clubs, etc. Rotary International has adopted it as an optional standard for, eventually, all clubs to have stateof-the-art internal and external communications. The three major functions of Club Runner are website, directory, and . Today s speaker Cary Matsuoka WEBSITE While we have had a beautifully designed and functional website for a number of years, designed by Dave Hoffman and maintained by Don d Arms, it suffers from the need for central authority. All requests for content go through the webmaster, and content suffers from lack of ownership. The webmaster cannot go around soliciting committee updates to keep things current. Club Runner allows committee members and others to continually enter information themselves on current projects and activities. Thus a complete and current calendar of Club events can be instantly available. All this was possible before, but few committees took advantage of the website as an information distributor. Of course future success still depends on individuals taking the initiative to make those updates. The intent has been to show Los Gatos Rotary as an up-to-date and vital organization, but that will not be the case if apathy allows content to become stale. DIRECTORY Current roster information is always important, and the printed Club roster and Cat Tale updates have been successful in serving the Club. But now every member will be responsible for keeping his or her personal information up to date. The Cat Tale will continue as it is now, publishing through the new web site and listing address updates as identified. The Rotary Club of Los Gatos roster will continue to be published in printed form as long as the Club so desires.

2 It has always been possible for committees to request messages be sent to all committee members, but now the committee will be able to initiate this directly. A list of members will be put together by the chair and input as a list into the section of Club Runner. It will also be easier to send individual s merely by checking a box alongside the recipient s name. LOG IN INFORMATION For now the URL for Club Runner is At the right, near the top, you will see a pale orange panel saying Welcome, guest. If you are a member please login. Click on login. Login Name is firstname.lastname. Password is a generic word for everyone, which we won t print here. You should immediately change it to a password of your own choosing. Every member is strongly encouraged to get online and update his or her personal information. In fact, hurry before some hacker posts a photo of an alligator instead of your own good looking mask er face. It seems that Kamyar Negari brought back a special Hawaiian cookbook authored by a famous resident. After a very spirited session, Lynne Woodward came out the winner at $70. Thanks for being such a good sport, Lynne!

Along came Bill on a tractor and pulled him out for $20. This must be pleasant work, putting your tractor to work during the day. Well, I really work night and day. Mannie Rice has an insert in his back. He can t drive for a while, but will be back soon. Odette Morrow told us that Rosemary Pierce is getting an MRI soon. She s experiencing quite a bit of back pain. Ray Cobb s Parkinsons is not getting better fast, but his attitude is great. Ray s doing a lot of reading, and also listening to books on audio. According to Julian Rodriguez, Dave Downing is recovering from kidney surgery.
