5 Kevin Kim On September 15, 2009, Kevin became the first Korean-American to win a primary election in NYC history. As a first-time candidate, Kevin surprised many in the political establishment by defeating five other Democratic candidates convincingly - winning 4 out of the 5 Assembly District regions in Northeast Queens. Local media attributed the extraordinary grassroots effort of Kevin s campaign staff and volunteers, which included over a hundred high school and college students, to register and educate first-time voters about the electoral process as a major reason for his primary victory. Along the way, Kevin s campaign also set fundraising records for a firsttime NYC council candidate, receiving contributions from more than 1,330 supporters and raising over half a million dollars. Until recently, Kevin worked as the Deputy Director of Community Affairs for Congressman Gary L. Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.). His previous professional experiences include working as a federal law clerk for the Honorable Denny Chin, a corporate attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell, and a founding partner of a midtown law firm. Kevin received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University and his law degree from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and a Developing Editor of the Columbia Law Review. His community involvement includes serving or having served on the boards of various non-profit organizations, including the American Red Cross - Queens, Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York, Friends of Thirteen, Inc., Coalition of Asian-American Children and Families, Organization of Chinese Americans (LI), and the International Student Conference. He is also a certified Community Mediator through his participation in the Black-Korean Mediation Project, a year-long program whose goal was to improve relations between the African-American and Korean American community in NYC following the LA riots. Kevin and his wife, Clara, personally consider their greatest personal (and joint) achievement in 2009 to be the birth of their first child, Beatrice Enny Kim.
6 Su Sun Bai Su Bai is an Executive Director in the Legal and Compliance Division of Morgan Stanley where she is a lead lawyer providing advice on all aspects of asset securitizations, fixed income sales and trading, secured lending and work outs, principal investments and banking regulation affecting fixed income products. Prior to Morgan Stanley, Su was an associate at the law firms of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. At Morgan Stanley, Su was one of the founding members of the division s diversity committee which is recognized as a leader among corporate legal departments in raising awareness of diversity issues and promoting the hiring and inclusion of diverse professionals at Morgan Stanley and at law firms with whom Morgan Stanley has relationships. She continues to be an active member of the committee and serves as a mentor to other diverse attorneys throughout the division. Su has also been a strong advocate for promoting bonds with and representing the interests of the Asian American legal community including serving as the liaison with the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) for which Morgan Stanley has been a longstanding supporter. Su has also served on the board of the Korean American League for Civic Action (KALCA) for many years and was instrumental in organizing its inaugural gala fundraiser, leading to the development of its flagship summer internship program for college students interested in government or other public service. As a dedicated board member of KALCA, she has mentored many young Korean American professionals seeking to find meaningful careers both in the public and private sectors. For KALCA, she often worked to forge ties with AALDEF and other community groups in joint efforts to protect and empower Asian American communities by educating and securing voting rights for Asian Americans in the New York area. In prior years, Su has been an active member of the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York, and served on the organizing committee of the International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL) who, together with KALAGNY, hosted the annual IAKL conference gathering over 400 lawyers of Korean descent from all over the world to New York City. Su s commitment to the Asian American community has been longstanding as demonstrated by a successful youth enrichment program for the South Asian refugee community in the Boston area which she founded and directed prior to law school. The program continues to grow and empower new Asian Americans every year. Her efforts to raise awareness of critical issues facing Asian American communities and her work with the admissions committee led to a dramatic and sustained increase in the Asian American student population at The University of Pennsylvania where she attended law school, from a low of 1-3% to over 8% the first year of the program. Born in Seoul, Korea, Su is a knee high generation immigrant to the U.S. She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard University and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School where she was the Notes Editor on the Law Review. Her Note, entitled Affirmative Pursuit of Political Equality for Asian Pacific Americans: Reclaiming the Voting Rights Act, was published in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
