At the Gala, The DBA will honor individuals, and a law firm, that have made noteworthy contributions to the Latino community while raising scholarship funds for deserving law students. This year, our organization honors the Honorable Manuel J. Mendez of New York Supreme Court, Civil Branch, New York County and Lourdes M. Ventura of Ahmuty, Demers & McManus. The DBA will also recognize the law office of Robinson Iglesias for its unwavering support of the DBA and the Latino legal community. The revenue from the Gala enables the DBA to continue to carry out its core mission - namely, to promote the advancement of Latinos within the legal community and empower the Latino community at large. It is because of the generous support of organizations such as yours that The DBA a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has been able to put on a variety of programming and offer annual scholarships to deserving law students of color. 3 DOMINICAN BAR ASSOCIATION 14th ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP GALA Congratulations to our 2017 Gala Honorees! The Honorable Manuel J. Mendez Supreme Court, New York County, Civil Branch The Honorable Manuel J. Mendez of the Supreme Court, New York County, Civil Branch was elected to his position in He was first elected in 2003 to New York City Civil Court (County-wide) in Judge Mendez was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to Washington Heights at the age of 9 and earned his Bachelor of Science in 1983 from Fordham University College of Business prior to returning to the Dominican Republic where he earned his J.D. from Universidad Central del Este School of Law in In 1989, he completed the Fordham University School of Law s Foreign Lawyers Program and began his private practice career. Judge Mendez is described as a down-toearth person who doesn t forget his roots. When he was sworn in as Supreme Court justice, he chose to have his ceremony at the Isabella Geriatric Center in Washington Heights. Justice Mendez was also a founding member of the DBA. Lourdes M. Ventura Partner, Ahmuty, Demers & McManus Lourdes M. Ventura is currently a partner at the law firm of Ahmuty, Demers & McManus. She formerly served as a prosecutor at the Queens County District Attorney's Office and the New York State Attorney General's Office. She also served as deputy chief of staff and counsel in the NYS Senate. A lifelong Queens resident, Ventura is actively involved in Queens. She previously served on the Board of Managers, and continues to serve, on the Grievance Committee for the Queens County Bar Assoc. as well as the Board of Trustees for Queens Supreme Court Law Library. She also served as a House Delegate for the New York State Bar Assoc. Ventura is also a former board member of the DBA and past president of the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County. Ventura is currently the first Latina to serve as an officer of the Women s Bar Assoc. of NY as Vice President and was the first Latina to serve as President of the venerable Queens County Women s Bar Assoc. The Law Office of Robinson Iglesias The Law Office of Robinson Iglesias, located in downtown Manhattan, was founded by Robinson Iglesias, a graduate from Hofstra Law School and a former DBA Board Member. Notably, he was the lead attorney who settled the Reynaldo Cuevas Police Shooting case against the City of New York. Iglesias has appeared as a guest speaker on CNN Español and his cases have been featured on various media outlets, including CBS, NY1, ABC, Telemundo and Univision. When he is not taking on big cases, you will find Iglesias giving back to the community. Currently, he serves on the Board of Legal Services NYCthe biggest provider of legal services- at no cost to clients who would otherwise not have representation in court.
