3 Governing Sustainability in the Maritime Supply Chain International SSHRC Partnership Workshop UBC Sauder, Henry Angus Building #968 8:30 am to 9:00 am Coffee & muffins Tuesday, April 11, :00 am to 9:45 am Introductions & Day 1 Summary Discussion 9:45 am to 10:45 am Green Port Governance Moderator: Michael Dooms (University of Brussels) Kristianne Hendricks (Simon Fraser University) Greening the Port: Sustainability and Labour in Canada's Port Authorities Annually, Canadian Port Authorities (CPAs) move $162 billion in international trade, with implications that can be seen on a local scale through the examination of the workforce. Port operations respond to external pressures with policies addressing environmental degradation, however we do not know how greening policies impact dockworkers, whose actions in turn impact the geographic configuration of trade. This leads to the question: What sustainability measures are being implemented in Canadian Ports, and how do these measures relate to the work that is done on the waterfront? Building on my waterfront experience, I address this question with a content analysis of sustainability measures in CPAs and a case study in the Port of Vancouver. Drawing connections between local and global scales as they relate to sustainability measures and waterfront labour, attention is brought to the waterfront workforce while contributing Canadian content to the growing global literature on environmental measures in ports. Tahuzzud Hossain (Dalhousie University) Assessment of Current Trends of Greening Ports Seaports contribute to the growth of maritime supply chains, and economic and social development to host communities. Port operations affect the environment polluting the air, water, soil, sediments, and marine and terrestrial habitats. Adopting sustainability in port operations has been growing rapidly, and many ports claim or pledge to be green or sustainable. Green port approaches and initiatives are poorly described in academic research. This research explores what port authorities define as "green" or "sustainable", and what current trends exist for greening ports. Michael Dooms (University of Brussels) Green Port Pricing and Decision-Making European funded port comparison studies on how port authorities respond towards the challenge of greening the shipping industry, in particular the motives and rationale behind the set-up of pricing schemes, and what kind of institutional arrangements are installed. And, the development of a standardized tool to help ports address uncertainty in setting and implementing green port dues. 10:45am -11:00am Break
