GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CANDIDATE Why do you wish to serve on the USGBC Board of Directors? I wish to serve on the USGBC Board of Directors be because green building is a personal passion of mine and I think that my demonstrated skills as a strategically minded executive and building scientist can move that mission forward. Over the past 6 years, the Serious Materials executive team has been forced to manage many competing priorities seeing dramatic growth (thousands of percent points) and national deployment of employees and facilities (from 1 to 7 during that period). These are problems common to USGBC and I think that now more than ever, the national board can benefit from my professional experience with those exciting and challenging issues. A last advantage that I feel my background brings to the Board is my thorough experience and understanding of the requirements of such a volunteer position. I know the level of effort and participation required to be successful, and frankly, I am eager to give it. My wish to serve in this role is redoubled by the support of both my company and my family to commit the time and energy needed to be the best Board member possible. Summarize your professional qualifications, knowledge, and experience of most relevance to USGBC's activities. Describe your senior management and executive-level experience. Over the last 16 years, I have established a record of successful research and development as well as executive leadership in a building product-driven environment. My experience spans long-term corporate research, manufacturing and strategic planning with a focus on formal building science and a holistic approach to green building with a center of attention on new materials. In my current role at Serious Materials, I serve as the Chief Technology Officer. I am a senior executive team member with responsibilities across business functions and discrete business units. Proficient at participating on strategic technology direction, joint venture and licensing agreements, presenting to a Board of Directors, and leading a corporate Board of Advisors. Key responsibilities include: new product/technology strategy and road mapping; development of a comprehensive Intellectual Property portfolio; and company representation in both technical and business forums. Additional responsibilities include acting Sustainability Officer and lead in all corporate level sustainability activities. While a member of the senior team, my company has raised over $100M of private capital. Prior to
2 Serious Materials, I managed the strategic and tactical efforts of the Building Sciences and Engineering Applications Center of Excellence at Johns Manville. My responsibilities included overseeing the group s areas of expertise which included core physical sciences (acoustical, thermal, material science/fracture mechanics) and building design (moisture management, IAQ, building envelope design). Specific operating tasks included strategic lead of four laboratories, management of over 15 scientific and professional staff and alignment and technical guidance to the process development, product development, and businesses units within the global organization. Specify and describe your participation and leadership experience in any civic, environmental, and other organizations, as well as any of your affiliations, memberships, and accreditations, that may be pertinent to your leadership at USGBC. On an individual level, I have actively served in ASTM for over 15 years at times serving as an Executive Officer for two committees (E60 on Sustainability and E33 on Environmental Acoustics). During a major portion of that period, I have also served as a United States designated expert to ISO via the national secretariat, ANSI. This work has lead to the collaborative authorship of dozens of international test methods and guides. In the arena of model building codes, I have also served as the committee chairman for the development of a first of its kind model building code guideline (ICC G2-2010). In this way, I have contributed to and authored standards for ASTM, ISO, and ANSI. With this background, I can ensure that the USGBC objectives and actions are effective, and can be deemed appropriate for their region of influence and harmonize with the sister standards in other organizations. Professional Affiliations: Active member of ASTM building standards Technical Committees including E60 on Sustainability and E33 on Environmental Acoustics. Executive officer ( and ). Active member of the Acoustical Society of America. Chairman, Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics (Technical Council, ; Organizer and champion of the Society s annual Habitat for Humanity volunteer efforts, 2007 present); College of Fellows member. Member of the International Code Council Evaluation Service Advisory Council (2008-present) Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. Past Board member ( ), and Technical Committee Chairman (2000-present). Professional Credentials: Ph.D. in Systems Engineering MS and BS in Mechanical Engineering Registered Professional Engineer LEED AP+ Author or co-author of 16 peer-reviewed journal articles, all pertaining to building science or innovative building materials. 13 issued patents and over 20 pending patents also pertaining to innovative building materials. What resources could you bring to help further participation in USGBC by diverse sectors? Given my career role as a building scientist, my work has continuously allowed me working relationships with a broad spectrum of construction professionals. At times the work is detailed and specific and I interact most with architects and engineers. More often, my objectives and talents have broader implications, touching tens of thousands of homes or commercial buildings for energy retrofits and I work closely with owner and portfolio managers, utilities, and politicians. This work has taken place in locations, climate zone, and economic conditions across the United State. My experience with both detail and expanse at a national level is very useful providing diversity in the national Board membership. Also, I feel that I represent a unique professional perspective in my position relative to the worlds of academia, private industry, and policy. I have taught, I have researched, I have designed, and I most importantly, have learned much. As a result, I feel that I can represent a thoughtful, balanced voice with consideration of each of these viewpoints during deliberation of important issues facing the organization. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS FOR PRODUCT MANUFACTURER EXECUTIVE How can you help further the USGBC strategic goals of International and Green Building Marketplace? Professionally, I have access to building owners, portfolio managers, and regional political policy drivers. In conversations with these individuals, I use my technical background and the many excellent resources provided by USGBC to communicate the financial opportunity (both in payback and in market demand) and sustainability imperative to influence rapid deployment. Within the last year, my firm used these tools to help the Empire State Building chose a suite of technologies to reduce the energy usage of the building by 38%. Many more transformational projects like this are underway, using those same tools and relationships. This is an example a successful and potentially repeatable approach to a promising green building marketplace.
3 What are your local, national, and global experiences and skills in each of the following USGBC core competencies (as described in the USGBC Strategic Plan): Leadership & Transformation, Research & Development, and Collaboration? Leadership & Transformation As one of the original executive officers of an emerging national cleantech materials manufacturer, I have helped lead the technology agenda to realize quadruple digit growth over a six-year period. In 2007 I was a co-founder and founding Chairman of the USGBC-NCC Silicon Valley branch which was arguably the most success branch launch in USGBC s history, growing from 30 to 450+ members in only 18 months. Research & Development As a career R&D professional, I have overseen six national level materials properties testing labs and their associated research staff. I have authored or co-authored 16 peer-reviewed journal articles, all pertaining to building science or innovative building materials. With 13 issued patents and over 20 pending patents also pertaining to innovative building materials, I continue to apply my technical skills to the direct improvement of the built environment. Collaboration For 16 years I have been an active participant of USGBC complimentary organizations including International Code Council, ASTM, ISO, ANSI, the Acoustical Society of America and others. Throughout that time I have harmonized and leveraged their work toward common sustainability objectives. Over the past six years I have worked with the national labs (Oakridge National Lab, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) the DOE to coordinate building science initiatives so that they can have a more direct impact on green building. Within USGBC, I have worked with partner organizations (IFMA, BOMA, AIA, CSI) to work collaboratively to support the common goals of our combined members. As a result, during the period of my leadership, the branch held multiple co-sponsored events where members learned more about common issues and solutions. Describe your experience as an executive for a manufacturer of sustainable building product systems and/or materials. I currently serve as the Chief Technology Officer for Serious Materials. As the central technical strategist within the organization, my roles and responsibilities fall into several broad categories. I am responsible for corporate R&D, management of the intellectual property portfolio, executive sustainability officer and manager of the codes standards and compliance of our products. My position affects our company and sustainability community at large in many ways. First, I ensure that our products meet the rigor of true environmentally preferred products (via Cradle to Cradle, ASTM, or other). Also, I lead our company s culture toward personal accountability and social equity via the formation of our employee green team and assessment of our corporate sustainability mission. Externally, I serve as the company spokesperson for green building standards, energy policy, LEED adoption, and the business case for green from the private sector perspective. Describe how you have a demonstrated understanding of green building issues and topics in your area or region. The particular focus of my company s products and services is energy efficiency for both commercial residential buildings. As a result, it is central to my professional interest and responsibilities to understand the energy signature of buildings, in particular those in the Western region. Internally, I have built an entire service and technology program that has modeled many hundreds of buildings, profiling their baseline energy use and the opportunity for energy savings. I use this information not only internally for product improvement, but also as a knowledge base to the external community of green builders and industry partners. Extending this service, I collaborate with the regional research centers to improve the analytical and educational tools to enable better building models in the future and deeper energy savings in my energy sensitive regions. In parallel, I am brought in by the region s biggest contractors and owners to consult on their teams regarding their local issues. How have you promoted sustainable manufacturing practices and policies (such as, but not limited to, ISO certification) within your organization? In addition to my sustainability background, I have training as a Six Sigma Black Belt in lean manufacturing. I work closely with the VP of Manufacturing and Operations to minimized wasted energy and materials while improving manufacturing staff engagement. Several recent kaizen events have improved manufacturing efficiency over 20% while simultaneously lowered their assessed embodied energy. I also collaborate on research efforts to work with sustainable sourcing and
4 feedstock materials to ensure a sustainable product lifecycle. As an example, our EcoRock product was C2C certified Gold, as first for its product category. Describe your direct involvement in outreach and/or advocacy campaigns related to green building, particularly programs promoting sustainable building product systems and/or materials. As an evangelist for the sustainability movement and green building technology, I have been an invited or guest speaker for The Building Enclosure Council, the Department of Energy, AIA, CSI and other national organizations. In writing, my outreach in sustainability has been featured in publications such as Dwell magazine, Investor s Business Daily, Environmental Building News, and others. These presentations and articles are examples of the opportunities I take to bring elements of the USGBC core messages and communicate them to a broader public audience. GENERAL CRITERIA FOR USGBC BOARD How have you demonstrated a material role in championing sustainability or green building within your organization? During my six years at Serious Materials I have had the privilege of positively influencing our culture of sustainability in many ways. I feel that my most important contributions are not my roles as a product innovator or as the sustainability officer for the company but rather as the founder and executive sponsor of the employees green/social equity program Serious Change. Serious Change has become a powerful agent of engagement for our employees across the country. Under the program, employees have learned and acted on making their personal and professional lives more sustainable through lectures (water, energy, waste disposal, green cleaning at home); commuting challenges that have lasted months at a time; direct community outreach (food collection, marsh cleanup, halfway house programs); and green building (our LEED green professional program). I also feel that leadership is accomplished by good example. I was our company s first LEED AP, I commute by bicycle 4 days a week (approximately 4000 miles a year), and have brought my personal passion, Habitat for Humanity, into the regular Serious Change program. Have you served on a USGBC National committee or working group within the past three years? If yes, please describe your role, participation, leadership experience, and dates of service on all of the USGBC National committees and working groups on which you have served. Yes. I have served as a corresponding member of the LEED Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group since 8/2007. Have you served on a USGBC Chapter board or committee within the past three years? As a Northern California Chapter (NCC) Board of Directors member (2009 Present) I serve on the executive committee as the Board Secretary. I also serve as the Board lead for the chapter strategic planning process and as a member of the existing buildings initiative committee. Prior to assuming a board position with NCC, I actively participated in the NCC Materials and Resources committee ( ). Have you served for at least two years within the past five years as an officer or a board member 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization? If yes, please describe. If yes, please describe. Yes. From 2007 to 2010, I served as the Chairman of the Technical Committee of Architectural Acoustics for the Acoustical Society of America. This committee is the largest of 13 committees for an 80 year old professional society with 9000 members worldwide. Have you been employed for at least two years within the past five years as an executive for a non-profit or forprofit corporation, institution, or government agency with a total annual budget of at least $5 million?
