Andrea Zopp The Chicago Urban League Heartland Alliance s National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) is dedicated to protecting human rights and ensuring access to justice for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. NIJC works at multiple levels to achieve quantifiable, systemic change. We work to keep 10,000 immigrants with their families with the help of 1,000 pro bono attorneys. Through strategic impact litigation, we hold our government accountable for human rights and constitutional violations. Last year we had 65 cases at the federal and district court levels, including 11 at the U.S. Supreme Court. Through policy advocacy, we champion systemic reforms including ensuring that 400,000 detained immigrants no longer disappear in the system. These are our numbers. This is our record. But at the end of the day, we know that our work is best reflected in the number one. NIJC gives each individual, every day, some measure of human dignity. That is the critical measure of our work. What else would you expect from a group committed to the idea that everyone s welcome? 2012 Midwest Light of Human Rights Awards Event Committee: 13th Annual Midwest Light of Human Rights Awards Chad Doobay Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP Since 2000, the Midwest Light of Human Rights Awards has honored human rights champions and celebrated the contributions of business, civic, and philanthropic leaders in their efforts to promote human rights Keynote Speaker Maria Hinojosa Correspondent for PBS FRONTLINE, host of NPR s Latino USA For 25 years, Maria Hinojosa has investigated groundbreaking stories, given voice to the vulnerable, and highlighted the work of tireless and admirable advocates in the United States and abroad. Her stories on immigrant communities, including immigrant work camps in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina shed light on the injustices within our borders and demanded action on the part of our leaders. Her powerful PBS Frontline documentary, Lost in Detention, which aired in October 2011, exposed the broken U.S. immigration system. Born in Mexico City, Hinojosa was raised in Chicago. Hinojosa is the anchor and managing editor of NPR s Latino USA, founder of The Futuro Media Group, author of two books, and anchor of the Emmy-award winning talk show Maria Hinojosa: Oneon-One from WGBH/La Plaza. Hinojosa is one of the most successful female journalists today. She has won two Emmys, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged, and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary. In 2009, she was honored with an AWRT Gracie Award for Individual Achievement as Best TV Correspondent.
