3 From The Chair I love my job Not words you often hear. I recently gave a talk to a group of school-aged children where I was trying to explain what I do. Yes, I am a chemist; yes, I have a business degree; yes, I travel nearly every week to different parts of the United States. J.P. Northrop If you ask my son what his father does, he will say, He makes beer! Close, but not quite.i make sure that beer is the quality that is expected (but he s only four, so I let him get away with it). I work for a company that manufactures laboratory and inline instrumentation for the measurement of density and dissolved gases. My job description focuses my efforts on the brewing industry within the US. I sell quality through our instrumentation. Here s the thing: I love my job because it allows me to mix what I am good at and what I enjoy with a bit of education, knowledge, and experience. Oh yeah, and there s the fringe benefit that the product with which I am dealing can be enjoyed after work. How many of us are using our chemistry knowledge in careers outside of pure chemical research? Not many of us are at benches any more. Many have mixed our technical education with fields outside of chemistry. I am curious to hear from the members if this is the case in the Philadelphia region. In our LinkedIn Group online, I am going to start a discussion about our jobs and, in particular, how we may have taken our education (chemistry for most of us) and mixed it with other fields: law, business, entrepreneurship, medical, etc., and forged a new career. How has that changed over the years and does this make us happier? Has mixing chemistry and other fields allowed more career maneuverability? Please feel free to join the conversation online. (See notice on page 173.) This month also has a couple of special events happening within the Section. We not only have an election for Directors as well as a new Chair-Elect and Secretary, but, due in no small part to a Herculean effort by the Board of Directors, we have a new set of Bylaws for the members to consider and approve. Please take the time to read the new Bylaws, review the biographies of those running for office, and vote. Information on this will be sent via and postcard to your addresses of record. A special thank you to Dr. Rick Ewing for getting our election slate put together in near record time. We are once again lucky to have so many great and talented volunteers running for the Board of Directors as well as Councilors and for the Executive Committee. Thank you to all who volunteered. I know time commitments can be difficult for many of us and it is great to have such a wonderful and diverse membership from which to draw. October 2013 Page 169

5 SPEAKER S ABSTRACT AND BIOGRAPHY Dr. Ahmed F. Abdel-Magid Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer Therachem Research Medilab Chemical Process Research: The Design of Practical Organic Synthesis Abstract: Chemical process research is the lead process in drug development. Our process chemistry group was responsible for identifying the best route to prepare the needed amounts of a selected drug candidate for all other development operations (e.g., formulation, toxicology, clinical studies, etc.). The continuous changes in the pharmaceutical industry and the extremely competitive market place strong demands on process chemists to design highly efficient and practical organic synthesis methodologies for drug substance production. My presentation will include discussion of examples from our laboratories to highlight this trend. Biography: Ahmed is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer for Therachem Research Medilab. Prior to joining Therachem, he was with Johnson & Johnson for over 20 years, retiring as a Senior Research Fellow in Chemical Development. While working with J&J, Ahmed was also an Adjunct Full Professor teaching organic chemistry at Drexel University, a position he held for over 20 years. Ahmed received his BS and MS in chemistry from Cairo University and his PhD in organic chemistry from Temple University. He is a recognized authority in the area of organic chemistry and has an international reputation for his contributions in the area of reduction chemistry. With over 38 papers, 3 books and 32 patents/patents pending, his paper on acyloxyborohydrides as reagents for reductive amination stands as a pivotal contribution to the synthetic organic industrial and academic communities. Published in 1996 it quickly became one of the top 25 papers cited in the last century and is in the top 10 cited from the Journal of Organic Chemistry since Ahmed s contributions to Johnson & Johnson s Chemical Development program are enormous, providing successful scale-up of active pharmaceutical ingredients for use in humans. He received numerous internal scientific achievement awards including the most prestigious J&J Research Award, The Philip B. Hofmann Award in Ahmed s service to the chemical community began over 25 years ago at both the local and national level. He began participating on the local level with his involvement in the Philadelphia Organic Chemists Club (POCC) and assumed leadership responsibility as a major force in maintaining an exciting presence for organic synthesis in the local area serving first as Secretary and later as Chair (1994). In 2007, his contributions to both organic chemistry and the POCC were recognized with the Philadelphia Organic Chemist s Club Award. Ahmed is also very active in the Division of Organic Chemistry (DOC) and continues to be a principal motivator within the Division. Over the years, Ahmed organized or chaired more than 65 symposia. During his long association with the DOC, he has been very active in every aspect of the Division October 2013 Page 171

6 including currently handling the essential role of National Program Chair. The Organic Division of ACS also recognized Ahmed s efficient organizational abilities by asking him to chair the 39 th National Organic Symposium (NOS). He compiled a history of the NOS for the first time and presented the document as a legacy to the Organic Division. His scientific excellence and service to the Society were recognized when, based upon his nomination by the Philadelphia Section, he was inducted as an ACS Fellow in the inaugural year of the program. 13 GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT AFFILIATE CHAPTERS TO REQUEST FUNDS TO ATTEND NATIONAL ACS MEETINGS Undergraduate students from ACS Student Affiliate Chapters in the Philadelphia Section are encouraged to consider attending ACS National Meetings. A limited amount of funding will be provided to chapters requesting sponsorship based on the following general guidelines. General Guidelines 1) First consideration will be given to student(s) who wish to attend a National Meeting to give a presentation (oral or poster). Students attending for other purposes, i.e., to receive an award or attend a specific workshop, etc., are also eligible to apply for support. 2) The student(s) must have requested support from their College or University (including department and/or advisor) to assist in defraying the travel costs. Please attach a copy of the correspondence. 3) The student(s) should have a clear idea of the benefits of attending the meeting. Please attach a short paragraph from each student indicating which sessions, including workshops, etc., the student plans to attend and why these sessions will help them obtain their professional goals. All applications must include an itemized list of the projected costs of the trip, i.e., registration, air-fare, train or car expenses, hotel, etc., and indicate which of these costs (if any) are being provided by other sources. An application for travel support can be made at any time to the Philadelphia Section, but for full consideration, the application must be received by the Section Office by January 31 st for the Spring meeting and May 31 st for the Fall meeting. The Philadelphia Section will evaluate all applications received by the deadline and vote at the February meeting for the Spring ACS meeting applications and at the June meeting for the Fall ACS meeting applications. The amount of funding available may be influenced by the number of applications for a particular meeting and the costs of attending that meeting, i.e., where it is being held. The successful applicant must submit a brief report highlighting the conference experience to the Philadelphia Section at the completion of the trip. The original receipts should also be submitted to the Section Office for reimbursement. October 2013 Page 179
