3 From The Chair J.P. Northrop One thousand, four hundred and twenty-three 1,423. That s how many s I received over the last week in my work and my primary home accounts. That s over one thousand s that had to be waded through, sorted, prioritized and, sometimes, action taken. Some were easy; others required some preparation and thought before responding. Some came through to my cell phone, others popped up on my office computer, still others were brought to my attention by my wife when I got home I can t imagine how I could have missed an important in the vast mélange of information hitting my inbox every day. We are all in similar situations. Information comes at us at the speed of electrons and the human brain has not been trained to keep up with everything that is available to us. Even if we use filters and color sorting options to try to highlight the important things (my boss s automatically get blue lettering with a bright yellow background), it can still be quite a bit to handle. So, why do I mention this? More importantly, why do I mention this here? We know that the ACS National sends out quite a few s, each from different divisions, sometimes overlapping on topics. In an effort to not to dilute our own Section s messages, our Communications Committee (responsible for putting together the Catalyst as well as electronic mailings) works very hard to make sure that all pertinent information is put into a form that allows our members to get the information that they need when they need it. You may have noticed a change to the format announcing the latest Catalyst. We have had a few discussions concerning what should be in the versus what is best left in the body of the Catalyst. Any other announcement (in the form of blasts) outside of our monthly announcement requires special permission so that we do not abuse our membership s inboxes. The question I have for the membership is this: what form of communication is best for us to get timely information to our membership? ? Online Calendars? the Catalyst? Feel free to respond to me personally at john.northrop@anton-paar.com or you can go to the LinkedIn ACS Philadelphia Group page to answer the online survey: mostpopular=&gid= This type of information will allow us to make sure that the information that we have as a Section gets to our members in the best possible way. Interested in Working for ACS? We are drawing up the slate of candidates for the fall 2013 election. Specifically, there are openings for chairelect, secretary, directors, and councilors. The chair-elect has several responsibilities, including chairing the Section awards and program committees during the first year of the term and running the Section during the second year. The secretary is mainly responsible for taking the minutes at board meetings and preparing them for publication in the Catalyst. Directors form the governance of the local Section and meet monthly September-June. Councilors represent the Section at ACS national meetings. If you would like to run, please get in touch with Rick Ewing (william.ewing@bms.com) or Libby Harper (PhilaACS@aol.com or ). April 2013 Page 75

5 SPEAKER S ABSTRACT AND BIOGRAPHY Darrell L. Davis President, Committee for Action Program Services (CAPS) Forensics in a CSI Era Abstract: With the influx of TV shows depicting forensic work as glamorous and easy, the appeal of being a crime scene investigator has struck an interest amongst college students and the professional workforce. As a former forensic scientist for the Drug Enforcement Administration s Office of Forensic Sciences, I will discuss the forensics disciplines and current drug trends that are facing our country today. 7 Robin M. Hochstrasser, a pioneer in the use of lasers in chemistry and biomedical research, February 27 th at 82. His early work with molecular spectroscopy evolved into use of lasers in research of proteins. His work with femtosecond laser pulses led to two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy. His pioneering technology has been applied to studying drug interaction with target proteins to gain a better understanding of diseases like AIDS, Alzheimer s, and influenza. Born in Scotland, Hochstrasser joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia, and then moved to the University of Pennsylvania in 1963 where he continued to teach and conduct research for the next 50 years. From 1975 to 2012 he edited the journal Chemical Physics. He chaired divisions in both the ACS and the American Physical Society and trained 75 PhD students and nearly 100 postdoctoral fellows. Hochstrasser was a visiting professor in Germany, France, Australia and the UK. He was the recipient of many honors including the Philadelphia Section award, the Linus Pauling award, the Benjamin Franklin medal in chemistry, the Peter Debye award in physical chemistry, and was a fellow of the Optical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Physical Society, among others. 8 GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT AFFILIATE CHAPTERS TO REQUEST FUNDS TO ATTEND NATIONAL ACS MEETINGS Undergraduate students from ACS Student Affiliate Chapters in the Philadelphia Section are encouraged to consider attending National Meetings of the American Chemical Society. In this regard, a limited amount of funding will be provided to chapters requesting sponsorship based on the following general guidelines. General Guidelines 1) First consideration will be given to student(s) who wish to attend a National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to give a presentation (oral or poster). Students attending for other purposes, i.e., to receive an award or attend a specific workshop, etc., are also eligible to apply for support. 2) The student(s) must have requested support from their College or University (including department and/or advisor) to assist in defraying the travel costs. Please attach a copy of the correspondence. 3) The student(s) should have a clear idea of the benefits of attending the meeting. Please attach a short paragraph from each student indicating which sessions, including workshops, etc., the student plans to attend and why these sessions will help them obtain their professional goals. All applications must include an itemized list of the projected costs of the trip, i.e., registration, airfare, train or car expenses, hotel, etc., and indicate which of these costs (if any) are being provided by other sources. An application for travel support can be made at any time to the Philadelphia Section, but for full consideration, the application must be received by the Section Office by January 31 st for the Spring meeting and May 31 st for the Fall meeting. The Philadelphia Section will evaluate all applications received by the deadline and vote at the February meeting for the Spring ACS meeting applications and at the June meeting for the Fall ACS meeting applications. The amount of funding available may be influenced by the number of applications for a particular meeting and the costs of attending that meeting, i.e., where it is being held. The successful applicant must submit a brief report highlighting the conference experience to the Philadelphia Section at the completion of the trip. The original receipts should also be submitted to the Section Office for reimbursement. April 2013 Page 80

These awards recognize outstanding uses of DuPont fluoropolymers to create inventive market solutions that benefit the environment, showcase extraordinary innovation, or deliver a game-changing market application. In 1938, Dr. Roy J. Plunkett transformed an apparent mistake into the discovery of PTFE, which was the first fluoropolymer and remains one of the most valuable and versatile materials ever invented. Fluoropolymer-based products play a critical role in providing cable and internet service, generating clean and renewable energy, manufacturing more efficient and reliable cars, making mobile communications devices, and designing safe buildings, ships and aircraft. Submissions to the 2013 Plunkett Awards will be accepted until May 31, Entries will be evaluated for their degree of innovation, contribution to enhanced sustainability, and economic and commercial significance. Winners are to be announced in November Submitting an entry to the 2013 Plunkett Awards is easy. The entry form can be downloaded at completed in four steps and ed to myaward@plunkettaward.com.
