1 Queensland Shadow Cabinet March 2014 On 19 April 2012 the Hon Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Leader of the Opposition in QLD, announced her Shadow Cabinet. Following the 2012 South Brisbane by-election, Jackie Trad MP joined the Shadow Cabinet. In February 2014, the Hon Yvette D Ath MP was elected in the Redicliffe by-election and was subsequently appointed to the Shadow Cabinet. Please see below for a short biography of each member of the Queensland Parliamentary Labor Party. 2 Annastacia Palaszczuk Leader of the Opposition Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Industrial Relations, Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games Member for Inala Annastacia Palaszczuk was elected as the Leader of the Parliamentary Labor Party and became the Opposition Leader following the 2012 State Election. She has previously held the positions of Minister for Transport and Multicultural Affairs and Minister for Disability Services. Prior to entering politics, Annastacia worked as a policy adviser to a number of Labor ministers, including Minister for Communities, Disabilities and Seniors Warren Pitt and former Minister for the Environment Dean Wells. Annastacia contested and won the seat of Inala at the 2006 QLD state election following her father s, Labor MP Henry Palaszczuk s, retirement. Her father had held the seat of Inala from Annastacia Palaszczuk grew up in the Brisbane suburb of Durack. Annastacia is a patron of Inala Community House, Project Love & Care, Wolston Park Golf Club and the Darra-Oxley Pony Club. 2

3 Tim Mulherin Deputy Leader of the Opposition Shadow Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Racing, Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Local Government Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin was born and raised in Mackay, where in now lives with his wife and three children. Prior to entering politics, Tim was a clerk on the Mackay Electricity Board. From 1994 to 1995 he was a state organiser of the Australian Labor Party. In 1995, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the Labor member for Mackay. In 2005 he became Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries in Beattie government. He was given additional responsibility for Regional Development in 2009, and his title was recast as Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland. In February 2011, he became Minister for Agriculture, Food and Regional Economies. Tim was elected as Deputy Opposition Leader following the 2012 election. He is the longestserving ALP MP and the only to have served in Opposition, having been in Parliament during the Coalition Ministry of Rob Borbidge. Tim is a patron of many local sporting and community organizations and a member of the Australian Republican Movement. 3

4 Curtis Pitt Manager of Opposition Business Shadow Minister for Treasury and Trade, Energy and Water Supply, Employment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt was born in and raised in Gordonvale, south of Cairns. He went to James Cook University in Cairns where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Politics. Prior to entering politics, Curtis worked in the Queensland Public Service for six years. Most recently, he led the Queensland Government s Indigenous Jobs and Enterprises Taskforce, established to improve economic participation for members of discrete Indigenous communities. Curtis was elected to the seat of Mulgrave at the 2009 QLD election. Prior to Curtis election, the seat had been held by his father, Warren Pitt. Curtis has previous served as the Minister for Disability Services, Mental Health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships. Prior to his appointment to Cabinet, Curtis was Deputy Government Whip (May 2010 February 2011) and briefly member of the Environment and Resource Committee. He was a member of the Integrity, Ethics and Parliamentary Privileges Committee (April 2009 February 2011) and Temporary Speaker/Deputy Speaker (April 2009 May 2010). Curtis has also previously been a member of various Ministerial Legislative Committees. Curtis has been an Auxiliary Firefighter with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, and is currently a member of the Edmonton Lions Club and the Gordonvale RSL Citizens Auxiliary. He is patron of several sporting and community orgnaisations, including the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support (SANDS) Queensland. 4

Jo-Ann Miller Opposition Whip Shadow Minister for Health, Natural Resources and Mines, Housing Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller was born in Ipswich, QLD.

5 Jo-Ann Miller Opposition Whip Shadow Minister for Health, Natural Resources and Mines, Housing Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller was born in Ipswich, QLD. She attended Silkstone State School and Bremer State High School. She graduated with a Bachelor of Business, (Public Administration), from Queensland University of Technology in 1980, majoring in political science, and state and local government administration. Jo-Ann was elected as the Member for Bundamba at a by-election in 2000, which was brought about by the resignation of Bob Gibbs in late Immediately before entering politics, Jo-Ann worked on the staff of Bob Gibbs. Prior to that she had worked as a Registrar and Manager of Justices of the Peace Branch; as the Manager of the Daylight Savings Inquiry ; and for a major mining company and the Department of Local Government. Jo-Ann was a Parliamentary Secretary from 2001 to 2006, first working to the Minister for Education and later to the Minister for Health. She has chaired a number of committees, including the Transport, Local Government and Infrastructure Committee; the select Committee on Travelsafe; and the Scrutiny of Legislation Committee. Jo-Ann is married with two daughters, and her interests include current affairs, reading and sewing. 5

Her father owned an electrical appliance sales and service business. Desley Scott was elected as the Member for Woodridge at the 2001 QLD election. Prior to the election, Desley had worked as an electoral officer for 16 years. In that time she worked for both Bill D'Arcy and Mike Kaiser. She also holds a Dental Nurse Certificate, which she trained for in both Toowoomba and Victoria. Desley has a particular passion for early childhood development and a strong focus on parenting and promoting healthy lifestyles. She has also chaired the Griffith University Logan Campus Development Advisory Group since its inception and takes a keen interest in all levels of education and training. She is Patron or Vice Patron to a number of community organisations, including the Logan Artists Association, Logan Womens Health and Wellbeing Centre, Disabled Ten-Pin Bowlers Association, Citizens Auxiliary of the RSL, 40 plus Club of Crestmead, German Shepherd Club of Qld, and a member of many clubs and organisations such as Soropimists, Zonta, Lions, Assoc of Women Educators. She has chaired and served on various parliamentary and ministerial committees, including the Industry, Education and Industrial Relations committee; and the Social Development committee. Desley is married with three sons, a granddaughter and a grandson. Her interests include music and her three sons have worked as professional musicians. 6

7 Bill Bryne Shadow Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services, Construction and Public Works, National Parks, Sport and Recreation. Member for Rockhampton Bill Byrne was elected as the Member for Rockhampton in the 2012 QLD election. Prior to entering politics, Byrne completed a four year electrical apprenticeship with Queensland Rail before enlisting in the Army in 1980, attending the Officer Cadet School, Portsea. He was commissioned as an infantry officer and has since served at various times as an instructor, staff officer and company commander. He has served in a number of senior command positions, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, his career including active duty and overseas service. In recent years he held civilian regional management positions within the Department of Defence with core responsibility for the sustainable management of nearby Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area. Bill also has experience and civilian qualifications as a marine coxswain, rural fire-fighter and emergency management incident controller. 7

Member for South Brisbane Jackie Trad was elected as the Member for South Brisbane in the 2012 South Brisbane byelection. Jackie has lived in South Brisbane for nearly 40 years. She grew up in East Brisbane, attended St Joseph s Primary School at Kangaroo Point and her parents owned and ran the fruit shop in Woolloongabba. Prior to entering Parliament, Jackie worked as a public servant in the areas of education and disability policy. Together with her husband, Damien, Jackie is now raising her two boys locally in West End. 8

9 Yvette D Ath Shadow Minister for Education and Training, Disability Services, Science, IT and Innovation. Member for Redcliffe Yvette D Ath grew up in South East Queensland, attending Redcliffe State High School and Queensland University of Technology, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Law. She went on to complete her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the Australian National University. Yvette was elected to the House of Representatives at the 2007 Federal Election, representing the Division of Petrie. In February 2013 Yvette was sworn in as Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. In the March 2013 reshuffle, the Departments of Climate Change and Industry and Innovation merged, and subsequently Yvette s title became Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, Industry and Innovation. On 22 February 2014, Yvette was elected Member for Redcliffe at a by-election and was appointed to the Shadow Ministry. Prior to joining the Parliament, she worked as an Associate with the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission, and as a Senior Industrial Advocate for the Australian Workers Union. Yvette is married and has two children. 9
