Brough Speaker Biographies President and CEO, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce represents over 3,500 businesses with 300,000 employees working for those businesses in Colorado. Prior to joining the Chamber, Brough served as chief of staff for the city and county of Denver and Mayor John Hickenlooper overseeing a general fund of $857 million. Kelly also served as deputy chief of staff and director of the Denver Office of Accountability and Reform, and was the first female director of human resources for the city of Denver. Brough earned a master s of business administration degree from the University of Colorado at Denver in 1989 and a bachelor s degree in sociology, criminal justice from Montana State University in She currently serves on the boards of the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation, VISIT DENVER, Goodwill Industries, the Denver Public Schools Foundation, and as a member of the Women s Forum and The Chamber 100 with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Brough was recently named as one of Colorado s 10 most influential women by The Denver Post, and one of Denver s most influential people by 5280 Magazine. In 2012, Brough received the University of Colorado Denver Campus Alumni Recognition Award. She has attended a number of leadership programs including the JFK School of Government s program at Harvard for state and local public officials. She was also named an American Marshall Memorial Fellow in Greg Clark Senior Non-Resident Global Fellow, Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program Based in London, Greg Clark is an international mentor and advocate for cities and metros in the globalizing world. His professional practice works with public and private leadership in global cities, global firms, global organizations, and at global events. He is an expert reviewer on cities for intergovernmental organizations and has led reviews in 100 cities. His portfolio of leadership roles currently includes serving as the chairman of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Forum on Local Development Agencies and Investment Strategies in Paris. He also holds the positions of senior fellow at the Urban Land Institute Europe and World Bank Advisor on Metropolitan Strategy. Clark holds a number of UK Board and leadership Roles, including serving as Chairman of the London Stansted Cambridge Consortium, board member of the London Enterprise Partnership and London Infrastructure Group, chairman of British BIDs, and member of the Lead Expert Group of the UK Government Office for Science, Future of Cities Foresight Project.
2 A leader in many thought leadership and research organizations, Clark serves on the Board of Directors and the Centre for London (UK) and Centre for Cities (UK). He is a visiting professor at the Cass Business School, City of London University and Associate, LSE Cities, London School of Economics and is a member of the Future of Cities Advisory Board at Oxford University. Clark is trained as an economist, social and political scientist, city and regional planner and has earned degrees from Cambridge University, UK, Columbia University, NYC, and London School of Economics. He is a Harkness Fellow and author of six books, in addition to numerous reports and papers on cities, metros, and business development issues. The Honorable Richard M. Daley Former Mayor, City of Chicago and Senior Advisor, JPMorgan Chase A former state senator and county prosecutor, Richard M. Daley was elected mayor in 1989 and reelected five times before deciding to retire from government in May of The longest-serving mayor in Chicago s history, Daley has earned an international reputation as a leading innovator in urban development, fiscal policy and government stewardship. Throughout his career, Daley has maintained a commitment to unifying mayors across the United States and the world to tackle the challenges confronting cities. He served as the 54th president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, organized the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative in 2003 for the restoration of the Great Lakes, and founded and chaired the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus for the Chicagoland region. He also made Chicago a hub for mayors globally by hosting the Sino-U.S. Mayors Summit in 2007 for municipal leaders of the United States and China, the Mayor s Hemispheric Forum in 2007 for municipal leaders across the Americas, and the U.S.-Arab Cities Forum in 2008 for municipal leaders throughout the United States, Canada and Arab world. Since leaving his Chicago post, Daley has found ways to continue spreading his message of global commerce though urban innovation. He now serves as senior advisor to JPMorgan Chase, where he chairs the Global Cities Initiative, a joint project of JP Morgan Chase and the Brookings Institution to help cities identify and leverage their greatest economic development resources. He is a distinguished senior fellow at the University of Chicago s Harris School of Public Policy; of counsel to Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, an international law firm based in Chicago; managing principal of Tur Partners LLC, an investment and advisory firm; member of the International Advisory Board for the Russian Direct Investment Fund; co-chair of the U.S. State Department s 100,000 Strong Initiative Advisory Committee; co-chair of the Midwest Task Force on Immigration; and on the board of directors for the Coca-Cola Company. Daley graduated from De La Salle Academy and earned undergraduate and law degrees from DePaul University.
3 Bruce J. Katz Vice President and Founding Director, Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program Bruce J. Katz is a vice president at the Brookings Institution and founding director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. He is also co-author of The Metropolitan Revolution (Brookings Press, 2013), a distillation of his work on the emerging metropolitan-led "next economy" and its practitioners around the country working to produce more and better jobs driven by innovation, exports and sustainability. Katz regularly advises federal, state, regional and municipal leaders on policy reforms that advance the competitiveness of metropolitan areas. He counsels on shifting demographic and market trends as well as on policies critical to metropolitan prosperity (e.g. innovation, human capital, infrastructure, housing) and new forms of metropolitan governance. After the 2008 presidential election, he co-led the housing and urban issues transition team for the Obama administration and served as a senior advisor to new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan for the first 100 days of the administration. Katz gives dozens of lectures and presentations annually in the United States before public, corporate, civic and university audiences. In recent years, he has also lectured about urban and metropolitan issues in countries such as Canada, China, Germany, Turkey, Great Britain, Italy and South Africa. In 2006, he received the prestigious Heinz Award in Public Policy for his contributions to the understanding of the "function and values of cities and metropolitan areas and profoundly influencing their economic vitality, livability and sustainability." Katz is a graduate of Brown University and Yale Law School and a visiting professor at the London School of Economics. Amy Liu Senior Fellow and Co-Director, Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program Amy Liu is a senior fellow, and co-director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. She and Bruce Katz, the Institution s Vice President, launched the program in 1996 to provide decisionmakers with the latest trends analyses, policy ideas, and on-the-ground practices to help metropolitan areas, compete and prosper. Over the years, she has worked directly with neighborhood, city, suburban, and rural leaders within metropolitan areas; and government, business and civic leaders at the regional, state, and national level to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing our communities. Liu is a frequent speaker on ways to advance U.S. economic competitiveness by harnessing the unique assets of regional economies. She particularly focuses on the importance of strengthening industry clusters, innovation, skills, and exports and trade to excel in the global economy. Liu is leading a practice effort at Brookings to help civic, political and business leaders in metro areas adopt intentional, market-oriented strategies for growth, including the role of state and federal policies to align with those strategies. She is also advancing a Global Cities Initiative to help U.S. and international cities, with their state partners, act on their roles as engines of the global economy.
4 Liu has authored a number of Brookings publications, including Establish a Regional Export Accelerator Challenge (REACH) Grant Program to Boost U.S. Exports and Trade Capacity, Ten Steps to Delivering a Successful Metro Export Plan, and Delivering the Next Economy: The States Step Up. Her opeds and commentary have appeared in the New York Times, Reuters, and the Huffington Post. She is also an expert on the rebuilding efforts in greater New Orleans and southern Louisiana post Hurricane Katrina. She is often cited for her co-authorship of the The New Orleans Index at Five. Honorable Michael B. Hancock Mayor, City of Denver Michael B. Hancock became Denver s 45th mayor in July 2011 and immediately launched Peak Performance efforts that will save the city $10 million a year annually. His strategy for making government more efficient, effective and customer-service oriented laid the ground work for his plan to transform Denver into a Smart City that is innovative and intentional, particularly with regard to jobs, kids and safety. In just his first year in office, Mayor Hancock worked with congressional, state and regional leaders to land one of four satellite U.S. Patent and Trade Mark Offices for downtown Denver. The Patent Office will generate nearly $440 million in economic impact over the next five years while placing Denver on the cutting edge of technology and bolstering the region s burgeoning high-tech sectors and job growth. To support businesses, Mayor Hancock and his team also created the JumpStart 2012 and JumpStart 2013 economic development plans, which are making strategic investments in Denver s local businesses and neighborhoods. Hancock also brought new international flights to Tokyo, Iceland and Mexico City that will generate a combined $167.4 million in economic impact for the region while opening Denver to new markets in Asia, Europe and Central America. Hancock was born in Fort Hood, Texas, the youngest of 10 children from an Army family that moved to Denver when he was just 10 months old. A graduate of Denver s Manual High School, Hancock attended Hastings College in Nebraska, working summers in Denver as an intern for then-mayor Federico Peña s office before graduating in 1991 with a B.A. in political science and minor in communications. He earned a master s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado-Denver in Hancock started his career while pursuing his master s degree, working at both the Denver Housing Authority and National Civic League, where he designed, implemented and oversaw the first-ever athletic, cultural and leadership-training programs in public housing and helped groups all over the country craft and enact strategic plans to solve economic and budget challenges, increase civic participation and improve governance. He joined Metro Denver s Urban League affiliate in 1995 as program director before becoming president in 1999, becoming the youngest president of an Urban League chapter in America. At the Urban League, Hancock created a nationally recognized and award winning job-training program and developed long lasting private-sector partnerships. In 2003, Hancock was elected to represent Denver City Council s District 11. He served two terms as council president, from He presided over the creation of the Denver Preschool Program; spearheaded efforts to expand economic opportunities; fought to end the foreclosure crisis and mortgage fraud; helped initiate innovative-schools legislation and helped guide the Better Denver Bond program.
5 Todd D. Munson Colorado Market Manager, JPMorgan Chase Todd D. Munson became Colorado market manager for Chase in September 2005, relocating from Kentucky where he held a similar position. In his current role, Munson oversees the public affairs and market-based business for the company s 2,000 employees and nearly one million customers. Munson s affiliation with Chase dates back to 1996, when he joined predecessor organization Bank One as a senior commercial banker in Louisville, Kentucky. Over the years, he has served in increasingly responsible roles including three years as president of the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio Region and two years as market president of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In both Ohio and Kentucky, Munson was an active community leader. In Colorado, Munson has quickly assumed a leadership role in the community and serves on several Non-Profit Boards. Todd is an executive board member and treasurer of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, a board member and co-chair of the Denver Economic Development Corporation, a board member and past chairman ( ) of Goodwill Industries of Denver, a board member and past chairman of the Finance Committee for the Colorado Symphony, a board member of the Mile High United Way and chairman of the 2008 United Way Giving Campaign. With a passion for philanthropy and community giving, Munson also volunteers his time in the community. An undergraduate of Rollins College, in Winter Park, Florida, Munson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics. He also holds a Masters degree in Finance from the Crummer School of Business at Rollins College, and has his Investment Banking Series 79 license.
