6 Tom and Ann Cousins are equally well-known and respected for their philanthropic work. They established the Cousins Foundation and the CF Foundation, Inc. to provide funding for numerous arts, education, and faithbased organizations and programs in Atlanta. In the early 1990s, Tom and Ann turned their attention to the crime and concentrated poverty at the East Lake Meadows public housing in the East Lake neighborhood. The East Lake Foundation was established in 1995 to revitalize the East Lake community by implementing a three-pillar model of mixed-income housing and infrastructure, educational opportunities from cradle-to-college, and community wellness. Twenty years later, East Lake is thriving like never before. To build on the success of the East Lake Foundation, in 2009, Tom established Purpose Built Communities, in partnership with philanthropists Warren Buffett and Julian Robertson, to replicate the East Lake redevelopment model in communities across the country. Tom also cofounded and serves on the board of the Georgia Research Alliance. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors for more than fifteen business and civic organizations, including Nations Bank, Shaw Industries, the Woodruff Arts Center, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce PHILANTHROPISTS OF THE YEAR Tom and Ann Cousins have helped build the city of Atlanta. For more than four decades their work in real estate and philanthropy have not only shaped the Atlanta skyline and the professional sports landscape, but also transformed Atlanta s East Lake community from a place of despair to a place of possibility. Tom is well-known and respected for co-founding and leading Cousins Properties Inc., one of the largest equity real estate investment trusts in the country. They developed Atlanta landmarks such as the CNN Center, the Omni Coliseum, 191 Peachtree Tower, Bank of America Plaza, and Wildwood Office Park. In addition, Cousins Properties donated the land, provided the preliminary architectural drawings, and guaranteed the construction cost for the first stage of the World Congress Center, Georgia s world-class convention and meeting facility. Ann is an elder at North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. She was a member of the General Assembly Mission Board of the old PCUS and served on the General Assembly Council of the reunited PCUSA. Ann recently retired from the Board of Directors for the Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta. She was also on the Board at The Atlanta History Center, Penland School of Crafts, The National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Auburn University Foundation, the High Museum of Art, the Cousins Foundation, and the CF Foundation, Inc. Tom and Ann enjoy living in Atlanta and Florida. They have two grown children and four grandchildren. They enjoy participating in many civic and artistic causes, as well as spending time with their family and traveling. Philanthropy in the United States holds one of the keys to life-changing possibilities, but the constant challenge is how to make a measureable difference. Philanthropy needs to be much more entrepreneurial willing to take risks to discover solutions, and then demand measureable results that can be replicated. - Tom Cousins National Philanthropy Day 2015 National Philanthropy Day 11
7 Teen Volunteer of the Year Award Recipients 2015 VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISERS OF THE YEAR Mary Rockett Brock & John F. Brock III Mary Rockett Brock and John F. Brock III have made a tremendous impact on the City of Atlanta through volunteer leadership and transformative philanthropy. Natives of small-town Moss Point, Mississippi, Mary and John are remarkable in their ability to motivate and inspire others to support worthwhile causes and organizations. An alumna of Miami University of Ohio, Mary is a philanthropist, community leader, and pioneer in women s sports as co-owner of the WNBA s Atlanta Dream. An alumnus of Georgia Tech, John is a renowned leader in the international beverage sales industry and currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola Enterprises. For nearly half a century, the couple has provided visionary support to Georgia Tech, and as Co-Chairs of the $1.5 billon Campaign Georgia Tech, they have traveled the world together to advance philanthropic support for Georgia Tech. Their leadership and philanthropic investment have been integral to the growth and success of Georgia Tech. Therein, Mary and John have focused their philanthropy on the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, intercollegiate athletics, and biomedical engineering. Their well-placed philanthropy in emerging fields such as nanomedicine will lead to new frontiers in science and medicine, ultimately serving as a catalyst of change for the betterment of humankind. Mary and John s philanthropic investment at Emory University has provided significant support for research in the area of cancer detection and treatment using nanotechnology. Their continued investments in leading-edge research at Emory and Georgia Tech have helped position the City of Atlanta as a national leader in the health sciences arena. Mary is extensively involved with multiple organizations, and serves on the Board of Trustees for Spelman College and Usher s New Look Foundation, the Board of Advisors for Emory University s Winship Cancer Institute, Emory s Board of Visitors, and the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Horizons National, a program for underserved youth. In addition to his involvement on corporate boards, John is the Director of the Buckhead Coalition and serves on the Georgia Tech Foundation Board of Trustees and the Board of Visitors for Owen Business School at Vanderbilt University National Philanthropy Day 1st Place Meredith Jones passion is to help victims of human trafficking. During the summer of 2014 as a rising senior at Holy Spirit Catholic School, she worked towards earning the Gold Award, the highest possible achievement with the Girl Scouts. Her project helped the victims of human trafficking in the City of Atlanta by providing a kit that included pre-paid phone and MARTA cards, a reference booklet with organizations that help victims of trafficking, and an inspirational book. Meredith secured funding for the kits through the McKenna, Long and Aldridge Foundation, her church and her family. Her project resulted in the production of 88 kits, which were delivered to 20 fire stations in the City of Atlanta that provide a safe haven for victims. Through her outreach and speaking engagements, hundreds of individuals were educated on the issue of human trafficking. Meredith entered Harvard University this fall and is considering majoring in Chemistry or Classics. 2nd Place Xavier & Edward Holliday are Eagle Scouts and co-founders of the non-profit Brothers 4 Literacy & Life. They have worked to build global relationships by helping children across the world. Born out of their desire to honor their late Great Grandmother, the brothers supported their first school in rural Manchester, Jamaica by collecting and donating five laptop computers, over 1,000 pounds of books, and a combined 850 pounds of clothes, shoes and school supplies to the children of Robins Hall school. The students now have a library of their own and understand the importance of reading. Edward & Xavier are now raising money to put a block wall around the school for the safety of the children as well as install a garden. The brothers attend The Westminster Schools; Edward is a junior and Xavier is a sophomore. 3rd Place Remington Youngblood started Change 4 Georgia (C4G) at the age of 10 after being unable to find appropriate volunteer opportunities. In the past four years, the non-profit has inspired and connected hundreds of students from across the country to community service. To date, Remington has raised over $1 million in cash and in-kind donations, collected over 110,000 books to support literacy programs, sent thousands of cards and letters to overseas troops, collected food and diapers for families in need and so much more. Remington and Change 4 Georgia have been recognized by President Barack Obama. A freshman at Lambert High School in Forsyth County, Remington is a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a first degree in Karate National Philanthropy Day 13
